Drinking at games thread

All right, here we go. I'll start with the snippets I posted on another thread. I have more but need to wake up to remember them. Damn dementia.

I've told the story more than once here about the early 80's when you could bring anything into Martin as long as it wasn't glass. Thus the 5 gallon gas can full of spodie odie. 40 years later, I still can't believe we got away with that. You can't exactly stick a 5 gallon gas can in your shirt or coat. We got so shitfaced. Jumping on my motorcycle to get more vodka at halftime was nuts.

Couple of other quick ones. When I had season tickets, there were 6 of us that sat in Section 24. I had a big fanny pack that could hold like 17 airline bottles, which I would save and refill game to game. I would sit in our innermost seat and basically be bartender - my spouse and buds would pass their pops down and I would spice 'em up,

One game me and a bud smuggled in beers. Security saw us pulling on them, and just confiscated them, nothing more.

I took my Mom to a game once, and had a vitamin jar full of whiskey. Asked Mom to put my vitamins in her purse to get by Security. Then during the game I asked her for my vitamin jar, and promptly opened it up and dumped it in my drink. Poor Mom about had a stroke.

Edit - one more. Back in 1988, when we beat the mutts by one in a frigid game, I was living in my first stint in YakiVegas. Somehow I got 7 tickets to Apple Cup. Me, my 4 buddies, and frozen Mom and Dad. Anyhow, we piled into my Toyota van (that older style that was actually pretty cool), and off we went to Pullman, partying all the way. None of my buds had ever been to Pullman. So we watched the game, and then headed off to a party at some rural house. There were a passel of cute chicky poos there, and my buds were just gaga. I'm like, welcome to Pullman.

"I was never going to transfer."

Just read a great interview with Mateer. While I have my concerns about his ability to through the ball at a high level, the kid is tough as nails and shows tremendous leadership for his age. Talked about how he knew that most of the team never considered transferring. Really good to hear his thoughts on things.

I mentioned in other threads that I think the campus vibe in Pullman is an underrated thing in this transfer era. Of course there are going to be big money kids that we end up losing, and if there's a culture problem in a locker room, that program will see significant defections. Apart from those things, I believe WSU is going to press on and play to a fairly high level in our new league. Recruiting will probably be impacted some, but I've pivoted away from my initial panic thoughts. I've spent a fairly significant amount of time on most of the MWC campuses over the years. Apart from SDSU, none of them are in our league. As a University, a football program, campus vibe, etc.

At the end of the day, I have WSU slotted in where we've been for a couple of decades now. The best option out West for kids who aren't pulling in offers from UW, Oregon, SC, UCLA, etc. That's who we are and it's what we're going to continue to be, I believe.

Dickert focused on three upgrades to maintain WSU's success and playoff hopes

Per Brand X, CJD is all on board with elevating Cougar Football via the following:

1. Growing the Cougar Athletic Fund (CAF)

2. Expanding and Enriching WSU's NIL coffers via the "Cougar Collective"

3. Re-doing/Modernizing the football locker room. Good news is pledges have already been made for more than half of the estimated $3.5M pricetag.

“A football locker room is a sacred space for our team to build culture, strengthen unity’s and create lifelong bonds with teammates," CJD said. "This modernization will provide space for our team to do just that.”

Sounds like Dr. Chun and Coach Dickert have spent a lot of time identifying and prioritizing the football program's immediate and long-term needs

New apple variety

Here's yet another bitch of mine. Why do we need yet another apple variety, and how much federal (aka taxpayer) money was spent to develop this one? Geezus, when I shop at Winco, which rocks, there are like 10 different apple varieties in the bins. But we need more? Why? I suppose it is because WSU gets a shitload of ongoing state and mostly federal funding, so they have to do something to spend the money on. Hell I have 2 varieties in my fridge. Taste about the same.

While federal grant funding is not a huge part of the federal budget, there appears to be no oversight for any of the granting agencies. I've ranted before about our Shock Physics program, which I believe has contributed -0- to society after millions and millions in grant money. And our decades long Biofuel program, which I believe has resulted in nothing, in contrast to our numerous touting's of it over the years.

And not just pick on my alma mater, some of the shit I've seen at other stops are like really? And I had a hand in submitting some of those grants, which made me want to barf on the documents. Times that by institutions throughout the country. Oh and wheat research. Many universities, locally WSU and OSU, are doing all this research and developing new varieties. Why? And why do we need programs and costly administrative structures for all of them?

Gawd and once again I try to start a thread and this site F's me up. Is it just me? I've asked this question many times and have never gotten any response from this board. Hello McFly?

If you thought the portal and NIL rules were too restrictive.

Could there be college sports with no restrictions in the future?

Judge issue TRO on NCAA

Transfer as many times as you wish

What is interesting about various suits filed by current and former NCAA athletes, against the NCAA, is they will eventually put the NCAA out of business. On the surface that sounds great, since the NCAA had ruled with an iron fist until the past few years( " the hell with the Bast.....s) However, with no NCAA rules there will be less opportunities for other athletes in the future. And while each case has some merit, if they all win their appeals against the NCAA, the NCAA will fold and eventually many schools will drop division 1 sports. They'll drop due to costs and potential liabilities, and soon lack of fan interest. Universities will start spending more on attorney's fees then they will for the entire budge in say crew or tennis, so why carry sports at the D1 Level? drop down and avoid the limelight. FCS and lower levels might get a lot bigger in the future, more teams moving down rather than up. And while these athletes are currently fighting for their rights, in the end the true student athlete that needed a scholarship, to obtain a college degree, will have a more difficult time finding one because of these suits.

And then there is this, I may not just boycott the SEC, I may boycott ESPN entirely. Disney is destroying college football.

ESPN to give SEC NFL treatment

NFL today

For a change I caught some of the action. Some great games.

Vikings win 3-0 (?) in the last 2 minutes. Bills (I have a man crush on Josh Allen) came through late and beat KC. Colts got thrashed, even though Minshew's stats weren't that bad. Eagles are making it a game against Dallas as I write this. Sea Chickens got thrashed, but Purdy from SF continues to amaze. Still can't believe he was Mr. Irrelevant.

Some of these QB's - gawd they can fire that ball.

Allright, another attempt to lighten things up

I know, I've posted this before. But I'm looking at my own sweet dog right now and this now 20 year old (really?) Dierks Bentley video still kills me. Watched it a zillion times. Great song. But his dog. Just wagging and smiling the entire video. And yeah (sorry Julie) the smoking hot girl doesn't hurt. But the scenes where his dog is hanging out in the back of his rig are so dangerous and hilarious.

Geezus - another mass shooting, this time UNLV

3 plus dead. On campus. The news report said it was the 80th college shooting this year. After the very recent Austin, TX shooting that killed 6, although that was off campus. I did contact my son who lives down there to confirm that he was alive.

I don't know about the rest here, but I spend way too much time reading the news, and sports. This retirement, and no current woman (working on that), gives me way too much idle time. And no f-ing way am I getting into my camper before spring.

But the news is so horrible. The Gaza Hamas atrocities', poor Ukraine getting their cities wiped out, on and on.

A lot of people I converse with don't even read the news and have no clue what's going on in the county, state, country or world. How the F do you do that? Or not in this case. Oh but let the stupid punk students protest against Israel. stupid little F-s.
