Mountain West football

Can't help but to look more closely at the Mountain West Conference standings this season, and while is down some over the past couple of seasons, there's some good ball being played.

Air Force is 6-0 this season with a legitimate shot at going undefeated. They've blown the doors off of most of the teams they played, with 222 - 88 combined points for/against. Their 49-10 win vs. SDSU was impressive.

Wyoming is also having a strong season at 5-2 overall. Their losses were competitive games at Texas and at Air Force. Solid wins vs. Texas Tech and Fresno State.

The surprise team is UNLV at 5-1 for the season. They have an SEC win vs. Vanderbilt and their lone loss was 35-7 at Michigan. It would be a huge help to the conference if they figure things out and become a solid program year in, year out.

Fresno isn't as strong this season, but they're still 6-1 with only a narrow loss at Wyoming. Impressive wins at Purdue and at Arizona State.

Boise State is having their worst season in years. They're at 3-4 currently after a major choke job on a Hail Mary vs. CSU last weekend.

It's too bad that the media financials are as far off as they are with the P4 conferences, because this league is highly competitive and very entertaining.

Should have kept the Run n Shoot

Should have kept the momentum and continuity going and kept the offensive staff. Squeeze the lemons out of the staff and the offense...then hire a new offensive staff a few years down the road when Dickert is more established.

Hiring Morris just to bring Ward along was a big mistake. As was hiring Arbuckle, whom I was high on when seeing WKU play.

Cam probably has more career rushing yards than Barry Sanders if yards
from East to West were counted.

I haven't had a beer in a week...which is like dog years for me down here...but I might need to self medicate after that eyesore.

Cal is going to stomp us.

It’s very telling that….

Dickert keeps saying it’s on him to coach these guys better and have them prepared to play every game yet, he never fixes the issues that seem to be plaguing our offense. I’ve tried to reserve judgement until he’s had ample time to build his body of work. Welp, the team is actually regressing and he refuses to make the tough decisions needed to put a team on the field that is capable of winning. If he continues to force the square peg through the proverbial round hole, then he will lose Coug nation as we sink further into irrelevancy. Its just sad at this point, to see the pathetic effort on the field each and every week.

Make a play …

Make an easy play and we win despite what we feel is poor coaching etc. Not making plays is what teams do when they are in a slump and have a confidence problem .

I will give you four plays that are routine and it overcomes what ever weakness we have in coaching .

Number four dropped a pick six. Right in his hands, between the numbers .

Stone had their qb sacked and would have forced a punt, instead somehow he doesn’t bring the qb down escapes for a first down .

A missed fg and the kid never misses .

Four right before their go ahead fg 0 had a pick in the end zone. And if he just doesn’t screw it up, Colson has his second pick .

I knew they would struggle in the weather . Just the way the ball was coming off Wards hand reminded me of Minshew in the Apple Cup .

Post game thoughts.

If you’re juiceless you’re useless. So just got to work hard and go 1-0 because hard work works hard when the work gets hard. Just gotta believe and be the B.E.S.T. Keep energy high and be multiple and just believe in each other. Gotta bring the passion and energy and that’s how family over flash wins. #CVE. If you’re juiceless it’s useless. Gotta get the explosives exploding and the turnovers. Stay aggressive and be the B.E.ST. That how you stay multiple and aggressive and be the cougraid. 1-0 each week and just play together and to win with passion. Just get it done and fight. B.E.S.T. #FamilyoverFlash #1-0

This team sucks and Cam Ward is a fraud. Stanfords total ass garbage qb knew not to take a sack when in field goal range. Ours? Shits his pants and runs in circles. Yes the Oline sucks, maybe he could get that through his thick moronic skull when considering down and distance and our need to score a field goal. At this point I am watching more as a passive observer curious of how bad this can get? I’m sorry to those still invested deeply enough to get really frustrated. It’s just sad to watch now. We have frauds at a lot of positions both on the team and staff. Goodluck Chun or whoever has to clean this mess up.

Done holding my tongue

Cam needs to be replaced. I have not seen anything in the last 5 games to assure me that he is the leader of this team. IMHO CW is about stats and himself. At 2nd and 1 at the Stanford 10 run the ball, not take consecutive sacks. This has been consistent the last five games throwing behind or over receivers. He will not be playing on Sunday unless it’s fantasy football.

Can we consolidate all these threads about the future?

Shit I can't remember what I posted where. It's taxing my brain, which is already feeble. So, how about some near certainties:
  • We are going to be the Pac-2 for 24-25, and maybe 25-26
  • The Big 12 is not going to ask us to join, at least not for next year. Edit - I see the Big 12 has announced their multi-year scheduling matrix
  • We are going to do a scheduling agreement with the Mtn West for 24-25 and perhaps 25-26
  • We will get money from the breakup. The 6-year NCAA BB tournament money, the residual Rose Bowl contract money. Both to be paid AFTER July 2? Not sure on the RB timeline
  • Unless the Big-12 calls next year, a Pac-14 merger with the Mtn West is our only real option. ACC just revealed their 7 year FB schedule
All OK so far?

Uncertainties:
  • How will the rest of the season go, including bowl?
  • Transfers? Portal runs from Dec 4 to Jan 3. You would think that most players would chose to play in the bowl game, if any, to highlight themselves. But who knows
  • Budget and budget cuts? TBD
  • Coaches. Keeping Greeny and Etheridge are my main concerns. Greeny seems like a lifer
Loyal's all-knowing wisdom:
  • Good luck, potential transfers. Tons of P4 schools won't be calling, unless we win out or something equally outlandish
  • Contrary to most opinions here, I would embrace a Pac-14. Face it, it's kind of where we belong. Land grant schools, all out West, multiple R1 schools. Similar sized for the most part
  • Lobby like hell to keep the Pac-14 a P5 conference. Assholes owe us that much
  • Budgets. My opinion is that we look for the low hanging fruit, like our bloated non team staff. There is shit to cut there, starting with a few of these Asst and Assoc. AD's. Did Moos blow up our staffing? It's grown a lot, while nothing else has grown # of sports, etc.) Beyond that, we need to spout the "All's well" line at least for 24-25. No coaching salary cuts. No elimination of on-field coaches. No reductions in scholarships
  • Once 24-25 gets clearer, start a major Athletics fundraising campaign. If it succeeds, great for us. If it flops, well then we know and confirm our lot in life
  • Finally, F the huskies. No, do not play them under any circumstances

Do you agree with Dickert?

In his weekly Thursday show, Dickert was speaking on the defense going forward. He said, and this is basically the quote, “the main problem we’ve had on defense is not getting/creating turnover and building off them”.

To me, that is farther down the list than:
1. Very poor tackling
2. Very poor linebacker coverage skills against TEs and RB go/wheel routes
3. Inability to generate any real pressure on the QB
4. Losing contain continually

I disagree with his assessment pretty heavily. We could have won 1-2 of the last couple games if we could just play solid fundamental defense…tackle, pressure, and contain. Turnovers are a huge bonus, but shouldn’t be counted on to solve what stems from fundamental issues.
