WSU football suffered the worst defeat in its history (surpassing a game played six games previously vs Cal in Pullman).
Suffered its first shutout in 280 games since 1984 (at Michigan).
Suffered its first shutout in Pullman since 1956 (vs Oregon State)
Suffered the humiliation of USC coach Pete Carroll ordering his team to take a knee at the end of the first half.
Protected the meaningless redshirt of a staff members kid for three more weeks.

Entering the game WSU had been outscored by 190 points in its previous 4 conference games. With this 69-0 loss to USC it had now been outscored by 259 points in its first 5 conference games of the 2008 season.

The architect of this mess after this game deflected blame onto the players. Later it would be deflected on to the previous regime and anybody who criticized the new regime.

“Somewhere we have to have some players make some PLAYS. So the emotion level can pick up on your football team. This team struggles making PLAYS. So after awhile they lose that emotional edge and it gets worse”

Remember fans on this happy weekend for Cougar football – IT IS YOUR TEAM, YOUR SCHOOL.

The folks who made money off this debacle (media, alum, administrators, staff) and kept silence out of fear of rocking the boat (or ignorance) are for the most part long gone.

The fans remain.

Here are the highlights of the news report and a USC highlights (crappy music)

I don’t really see the point of opening up that wound again—masochistic?

It's the old school cougar way, c'mon gang...I'd much rather leave that sh*t in the dust, knowing now, we don't need that attitude. Sustainable success is possible at WSU.

It never hurts to look back and see where we have come from. I too remember well the destruction games against USC, Cal & Hawaii. Now, thank goodness, they are in my rear view mirror and I see clear sailing ahead. Leach coming to Pullman was one of the best things that have happened to WSU. One cannot argue with the results. WSU has risen from being the biggest joke in D-1 football to being a very good program. They, the Cougs are relevant again and that is the BEST!!!! They are fun & entertaining to watch and have a better, decent chance to win any game, against any team. 10 years ago that could not be said! Now Gameday is coming to Pullman. Sure, remember the past to see where we've come from, that just makes the present time that much more enjoyable & fun! Go Cougs !!!!!

Low point for sure

FYI, the 1984 shut out was at Big-10 Champs tOSU, not Michigan, and we had several opprtunities to kick field goals, we had about 450 yards of offense, but Walden was never "appearances" guy. Once we got down, he tried, then tried again to punch it in. Watched the game in the CUB AUD, on the big screen. But to give some idea just how bad 2008 was, we had only been shut out only 3 time since 1970, going into 2008 (yes, 38 years, more than 400 games), and we were shut out 3 f-ing times in 2008 alone. Further evidence that if you look at the "entire" picture, Paul Wulff was the worst coach in conference history.

The Paul Wulff topic:

On what's arguably one of the biggest weekends in the history of Pullman...do we really need to talk about Wulff?

That's some blue steel right there.

Yeah and just to add to that, despite the shutout, the 1984 team turned things around. Lost by only 2 points to USC and 3 to UCLA (I seem to remember we were tied, we were going for a winning field goal and then the long snapper hiked it way over everyone's head and UCLA kicked a field goal) and then won something like 5 straight, Rueben Mayes set the rushing record, and we played the apple cup close (and there were some controversial calls in that one). By the end of the season we were one of the best teams in the pac10. The 2008 team had no hope of turning things around and everybody knew it.

I'm of mixed opinion about bringing up the past with Wulff. I'll use an analogy from my own life. 10 years ago, I was still going through a painful divorce and custody settlement--although I did end up with the kids when the dust settled, the main winners were the lawyers. I am doing OK now. Now I'm with someone who I can genuinely call my better half rather than my bitter half (my ex kind of had a personality like Wulff-everything was someone elses fault, and she tried to soak me big time because we weren't a good match) So my friends would never ever bring up my ex wife just to say how great I'm doing now. On the other hand, I have to admit I sometimes pinch myself and am so happy those days are long gone.

I still had to deal with my ex sometimes so she could see the kids but thankfully Coug fans don't have to deal with Wulff at all. So why bring him up at all? I guess there are some here who still think he wasn't given a fair chance so I suppose it's important to remind them he was terrible. For the most part I just choose to ignore the aPaulogists so I don't have to get too worked up and just enjoy the incredible seasons we've been having.

The funny thing is that none of the so-called aPaulogists are talking about him......some people......just........won't.........let......sh!t.........go.

Remembering the suffering is a good thing, it stops us from being self-entitled arseholes.
