The Mighty Falcons of Notre Dame (South Euclid, OH) fell last year in the Division 2 Quarterfinals to Slippery Rock 65-59.

Yeah I confess to being among those underwhelmed by the offer sheets of our commits. I'm not gonna declare myself an expert, but it's not a positive sign

Well every year there are at least a couple dozen under rated players around the country who don't get p5 offers and end up being pretty good. some even get drafted in the NFL.
Perhaps this year we've just found them all for ourselves :).

All kidding aside, I'm concerned but I'm in wait and see mode. It's a tough year for a new coach to recruit talent. I would like to be optimistic and hope that the Wyo coaches who migrated here know what they are doing in terms of finding and developing players. Wyo was 11th in the country in total D last year and had 2 defensive players drafted (we had 0-although Jalen T was 5th in supplemental draft).

Kids play their way up and down in stars. Kids have offers roll in during their senior year.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the two star kids move up to three after their senior year. I wouldn't be surprised to see their offer list grow and get stronger either.

Im not going to pass judgement yet. Rolo has got to get his team on the field. I think being able to show off his schemes could help tremendously.

It's one thing to not be able to recruit higher rated players for whatever reason, valid or not.

It's one thing to recruit, get a couple, few, some 1,2 star, NR, Div 2, Whitworth, EWU, big Sky, mountain west, under the radar, diamond in rough, etc.

BUT it's another thing to recruit 26 such 1,2 star, NR, etc, type players, recruits.

And it's another thing to REJECT a 3, 4 STAR player, recruit, in order to recruit a 1,2 star, NR, Div 2 player away from NOTRE DAME DIV 2 COLLEGE, like Rolo did in REJECTING 3 STAR Shumpert, and thus also INDIRECTLY also REJECTING 4 STARS ALEXANDER/TINAE, to recruit a DIV 2 away from NOTRE DAME DIV 2 COLLEGE.

It's one thing to Reject a 3 star, 4 star, to recruit another 3 star, 4 star, 5 star, etc.

But it's another thing to REJECT a 3 star for to get a 1, 2 star, NR, Div 2, etc.

Any way you slice it, that sure LOOKS LIKE BLOWING IT.

So because of that Rolo LOOKS like he is probably BLOWING IT so far, recruiting wise, so far.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, smells like a duck, etc, it may, might even probably be a duck.

Imagine if SHUmPERt walks on to UW, and scores 5 TDs in the Apple cup before he goes onto become the NC mvp. The posts would be insane.

In all seriousness, without commenting on whether Shumpert should get an offer (I think he looks good, but he's a fringe P5 guy), this happening in real time illustrates the issues presented by going back years later and arguing a particular staff should have offered someone like Cooper Kupp or Kellen Moore, even as we must acknowledge those guys were in Eastern WA, twisting the knife a bit.

Sometimes a player just won't get that P5 offer and will start developing his senior year or while in college in unexpected ways, or just have what it takes in ways that don't show up on film or in situations in which you can evaluate the recruit. Obviously, if you can identify those guys, it is incredibly beneficial, especially at WSU, but you can't bring them all in, and some of the guys who go to the Mountain West or even the Big Sky are going to develop unexpectedly. Nobody talks about the dozens of guys each year who don't land that P5 offer and go on to be exactly what that implies.

425 hits the nail on the head.

The fan base has developed a fatalistic attitude toward recruiting over the years. The conditioning is strong. Rather than focus on landing the next Gabe Marks or Max Borghi, fans tell themselves not to worry because we might be getting the next Andre Dillard or River Cracraft.

Coaches miss on talented kids all the time. Sometimes we can correctly identify kids who everyone else underestimates. Unfortunately the reverse is far more common. There are plenty of kids who the consensus says pass that some coach sees as a future star only to have them flop. If half your class is guys no one else wants, it's not a recipe for success.

Compounding the challenge is the fact if anyone of our commits blow up their senior year, it's going to be easier to pull them away from us than if they had already turned down a number of offers. Does anyone realistically thing we keep Edson or Kershaw if UW swoops in this fall? What if a P5 school in Texas makes a run at Shepherd? Utah or BYU comes for Hilborn? Keeping them on board gets a lot tougher.

Relationships matter.

This staff was already behind the 8 ball. Theyre competing for kids that have had other P5 staffs recruiting them for 2 or 3 years. Thats tough to overcome. They havent had a chance to get kids on campus for spring visits. They may not get a chance to even play this fall.

For this class their evaluation has to be spot on. There is no room for error usually. Even more so now.

Consider this, kids verbals come and go. So do their offers. If any of these kids play out their senior years and just aren't as good as other kids wanting to come, you may see offers pulled.

The class is fluid until pen hits paper.

Further complication: a lot of high school kids aren’t going to play this fall. WIAA put out their guidance for fall sports today, and I expect that it’s going to lead districts to say they can’t meet the standards, can’t prepare kids for the season within the standards, and are just going to write off this season. And that’s district decisions - saying nothing of the parents who are going to keep little Johnny off the field.

College coaches are going to have to evaluate based on junior film that’s over a year old. There’s going to be lots of misses.

I could see a migration to Counties that are going to make it to Phase 4 for the High School season for kids wanting to get noticed or ones who just truly want to play football. Newport High in Pend Orville County, Pullman HS, Gonzaga Prep if Spokane makes it (though Spokane seems to be taking a step back statistically lately).....

That would be a nightmare for the WIAA. How do you punish a kid for transferring to play football in a pandemic when his school does not offer the opportunity?

I think you will see combines pop up all over states that lose football. Coaches will evaluate athletes. The game film may take a back seat this year.

This makes sense. It will probably be the only way for coaches to see kids side by side.

It’s the only way to gauge kids with social distancing. Everyone runs their 40 or agility drills one at a time. Wipe down the bench press after each athlete. No skelly or drills. No one near each other. Just get all the seniors and let them show what they can do.

This might be the only way. Current WIAA guidance limits team activities to “pods” of 5-10 kids who drill together. They use the same balls, which also have to be sanitized frequently. Under the guidance there’s really no way to play before Phase 4...and I don’t know how likely it is that many areas are going to get there by September, or stay there if there’s a second wave.

I think it’s just a bit overkill to require footballs to be repeatedly sanitized. Seems pretty unlikely that the QB will sneeze on the ball and the WR will sniff it.

My daughter started indoor volleyball training yesterday. She is with her pod of 5 other girls Her Coach was talking about the upcoming school season and said coaches will have to wear masks. Teams will not switch sides after each set. When you are subbed out, hand sanitizer is required. Also players WILL be allowed to wear gloves and masks during play.

You misspelled 'politically'.

How many deaths from COVID in Spokane County the last two months for those under 80 or without underlying health issues?

I'll take my answer off the air.

First it is getting easy to find high quality receivers.
second. I would not knock the big sky. They put a lot of kids in the nfl that WSU has missed in the past

Just FYI on the Shephard front he’s a 3 star now

This is why stars are a lousy predictor. Committing to a P5 school got him "reevaluated" and got him an additional star. Same thing happens when someone flips from up to a more prestigious program. The offer sheet is more telling.
