There were ads for Carhartt and Ariat (boots) during the show. Tough cowboy types riding around. So I think, where are these brands made? Stumbled across this website "AllAmericanmade.com", link below. I'm going to dive in and take a long look at it. We all should.
So, where are these "All-American" products made? Surprise!:
Carhartt - 11% USA, 21% Mexico, the rest all over the place. Ariat? Mostly CHINA, followed by Mexico. Interesting that the Chinese boots are considered low quality compared to the Mexican made ones. Very little is US made. I'm sure if I ran through my closet I would find a similar pattern on the labels. The Coug shirt I am wearing right now? Made in Honduras. My underwear? Vietnam. My socks? Mexico. Luckily I buy very few clothes.
Interesting comments on the Carhartt article. The company waxes on about their focus on trying to stay in America, but the article commenter speaks to Carhartt's booming profits and enrichment of their multi-millionaire owners along the way as they continue to move overseas. But yeah let's continue to lower taxes on the very rich.
Solutions? First of all, tax the shit out of the rich. Which will be the opposite trend starting on about Jan 21st. That said, here is where I can support stiff tariffs on China. Americans, you want to buy Chinese goods? Your price just went way up. Now, Mexico and other North/Central/South American countries? I'm OK with sourcing down there as opposed to Asia in general. How better to stem the tide of immigrants across the southern border than to create more livable jobs down there? Source our factories in Nogales and Tijuana and such. F-China.
And Americans. I support a living wage for all, yet our Federal minimum wage stands at $7.25. All these manufacturing jobs we are losing? I don't know what the salaries/benefits are for some HS educated assembly line worker in the US, but I can surmise it is a lot. But we want more so let's strike. Tomorrow comes. Wait, my job just went to Mexico or China, now I have no job at all. Hmmm.
Bottom line? Yes let's get isolationist and focus on the Americas. And did I mention tax the shit out of the rich? While I support Ukraine and Taiwan and others, at the end of the day those are Europe's and Asia's problems.
Finally, it is a conundrum that as we shift our jobs overseas and south of the border, the migrants keep coming to the US for a better life. Whether it failed or not, Kamala's (soon to be former) task to identify root causes for migration deserves a second go. Would like to see more of that under Trump.
