Time to lighten things up again. So my favorite band of all time is UFO. I have about 20 of their CD's, saw them live in Chicago back in 2017. Fantastic band, great music, much of it melodic hard rock. Stumbled across the autobiography of bassist Pete Way (rip) at my storage unit, reading it again. He was a crazy MoFo. A quote from I think Rush, during a concert where UFO was the opening act. "We were backstage, and suddenly the bass stopped. Pete had fallen off the stage".

Anyway, wonder is any other Cougs know who UFO is. The have been around since 1969. Trying to do their final 50 year tour, sidelined by Covid then singer Phil Mogg had a heart attack. Probably won't see them in the US again. They mostly stick to Europe.

So how about a thread on everyone's favorite rock and roll bands and stories?

You’re just trying to figure out how old everyone is.

Not familiar with UFO. As a child of the 80s, Def Leppard was my go-to for decades. Saw them live 5 times between 89-2001, after the last one I decided it would be better to remember what they were, not what they are. My resolve is weakening though, if they make a swing through the area again I might give them another shot.

I spent a lot of time traveling for work in the late 90s & early 2000s, broken by thousands of hours of field work, so had a pretty eclectic CD collection and broad knowledge of radio stations across the northwest. Developed a taste for a lot of stuff from the mid 60s to the mid 90s, through the flavors of rock and into the edges of blues and occasional forays into country. None of the dreck pumped out by the boy bands and the max martin sound machine, basically no hip hop/r&b/rap after about 1993…although Eminem did have some stuff that was catchy.
Stuff that’s been in the rotation recently - Mudcrutch, the Eagles (and Don Henley’s solo stuff), the Cars, AC/DC, and Alice In Chains.

Spent 15 minutes with Ringo backstage in 2016.
I saw Ringo with his All-Starr band in Spokane in 2016 or 2017. Gregg Rolie from Santana and Journey, Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather (Toto). Really fun show. A few hits from each member, plus Ringo singing his own hits and a couple of Beatles songs.

I saw Def Leppard (w/ Journey) a couple years ago. It was worth watching. The only band member who was clearly struggling was Rick Allen....the drummer. He's still better than the vast majority of folks banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee, but he was clearly getting some artificial assistance during the concert.

At that concert, Def Leppard was clearly the better reason to be there. Asian Steve Perry can wail, but he's not a rock star. He's a good singer who tries to make rock star moves. Still, if you like Journey, he probably sounds as good or better than Perry would today.

Journey without Steve Perry still doesn't resonate with me personally. Kind of like when Van Halen was trying out someone other than Sammy or David. And Van Halen, as a kid, was the band I had all their albums. Never saw them live, and am diappointed with Eddies passing a few years ago, but would see them with the rest of the gang.

Last time I saw them, Joe Elliott was the weak link. Couldn't hit a lot of the notes and couldn't sustain them either. And I don't mean late in the show - he struggled from the start. The band was still good, and they played the full catalog. A couple of their shows in the 90s they had emphasized their 90s stuff. By 2001, they were actually letting Vivian Campbell play Steve Clark's part. I left that show wondering if they'd replace Joe before they hit the road again, and I wouldn't have blamed him.
I give Rick Allen a bit of a pass, even if he's struggling...he's doing it with one arm. He does with that arm what most couldn't do with 3.

I think there was a tour gearing up with Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Poison right before Covid hit. I would have gone to that. I probably would have been disappointed seeing what they are compared to what they were (although really, most of them are lucky to be alive), but that concern pretty much sums up high school for me.

I am here for the Dire Straits reference - great song!

Allman Brothers...83 in Saratoga Springs NY.
But yes, listened to some UFO in the 70's . Vastly underated band.

Looks like Ed's collection of Bee Gees and Donna Summer LP's wouldn't play well at a CougZone tailgate ;)

I caught that line also. Dire Straights/Mark Knopfler in a first place tie with Pink Floyd for my favorites. He is an incredible songwriter, tells some great, great stories!
I prefer Chet Atkins and Mark together. Mark was a very cool character on stage even with a bandana. Other cool characters on stage...Sting, SRV, The Who, Bowie, any Pink Floyd (David) and Robert Plant (strained a vocal chord with a great deal of tequila in me). Oh, speaking of underrated bands...Cracker and Janes Addiction . Don't know what PF was on, but his voice was on as well. Seeing Rush when GL's voice was still there, then next when it began to go and the 3rd time when it was gone. Never went to see another Rush concert and preferred to remember then as they used to be.

Chet and Mark, huh? How about the Notting Hillbillies? If you don't know that album you owe it to yourself to check it out. So sweet!

Totally unaware of this project. 30 seconds into 'I think I love you much' and I'm sold. I'll listen to the rest this weekend . Like SRV...incredible guitar sound live or in video. Recorded by someone who really knows what they're doing.

Well any of you that are any kind of rockers need to Google and listen to UFO. They were and are totally underappreciated.

Here's a starter. My favorite UFO song. Bunch of live versions out there.....

Isn't he mixing fuzz effect with something else to get the warm sound? Anyone play 6 string? Maybe the big muff. Big muff song next

Okay boomer(s).

I'm sure you all drive 10 under the speed limit too.

Jokes aside Led Zeppelin is my jam. Never even heard of the UFOs but I'm a millennial.

If you like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter...you'd have to respect Michael Schenker. Dude was recording at an amazingly high level at the age of 16. He said no to Ozzy after Ozzy knew Michael was one of Rhodes influences.

Jeff Beck - "Blow by Blow". Fantastic totally instrumental album. The CD is in my car. Used to have "Wired", but can't find it.

Johnny Winter - "Still alive and Well". Great album that I also used to have. "Every now and then I know it's kind of hard to tell but I'm still alive and well".

Led Zeppelin - my 2nd favorite band. Had their first 4 albums (in vinyl) until my ex #1 got religion, thought rock and roll was the devil, and took my entire album collection to the used record store. I can pick 'em, I must admit. And Jimmy Page in The Firm with Paul Rodgers. I think I will Google "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and "Radioactive" and listen to them tonight.

Good times. You young punks have no idea.....

Edit: "Satisfaction Guaranteed". Forgot how erotic that video was/is, and musically fantastic. Just watched it for the first time in many years. Well worth 4 minutes of your time (if you are a real man or woman. I do have questions about a few of you on this board).

OH!! That is just brutal. Is that why you sent her to the Used Bitch Store? :)

Sorry if I opened any old wounds, just being a smart ass.

No worries mate. That was something though. My Led albums, UFO's live double album "Strangers in the Night", couple of Yes albums, can't remember what else. That was 35 years ago.

F-ing women. Bane of my existence. But they are so soft, warm, and pliable. And smell and taste good. Oops!

Loyal, were you a fan of Nazareth?

They had some huge records in the mid-70's

Ahhhh, yes they are indeed! But married or not, you don't do something like that with your partner's stuff. Hope she ended up with some karma back at her.

Yeah I got her back. Not physically (not with her anyway :)
