I believe it was in Bellevue? Interested in hearing some good stories and some fresh takes on the new staff.

The last one I attended was the Shelton Danzy one down in Tacoma. Would be nice to hear what the night was like.

Funny story when I was living in West Seattle back in the 90's my crew and I went to the event at the Sheridan in Tacoma. We rolled in to what we thought was the Cougar event and were told the booze was free. We looked at each other and said well that is a new touch....free booze, last year we had to pay. One of my buddies looks across the room and saw some trophies...he said why the hell is there trophies, we didn't win anything last year. We started looking around and didn't recognize anyone. Finally I asked one of the guys serving beer if this was the Cougar event. He said no, you are at the sheet metal convention. Coug event is down the hall. We of course hung out for a few more "free" beers before we left for the Coug Event. Still get a chuckle out of that to this day.

You had me at why are there trophies in here 😃. You and your friends are better men than I. I probably would have stayed.

More sheet metal conventions please!

I skipped this year. Any idea why they didn’t do the Spokane event on a Friday or Saturday since it wasn’t on signing day?

When I wrote them about skipping portland, the just was that 4 stops was just to onerous for... someone, or everyone. My guess is that since Seattle is the big money event and they get the weekend, doing a back- to- back Spokane- to- Seattle would just be to much effort/ work.

Nah, I'm not bitter, so I seem like I'm bitter,

I'll post their email reply to my inquiry later when I'm not on mobile.

Why did they did they ditch Portland?

"This year we decided to shift to three Night with Cougar Athletics events for both recruiting and financial reasons. Moving from two separate weeks of events to one allows our coaches to get back on the road earlier and continue recruiting the next generation of Cougs. After consideration, we decided that the markets of Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Seattle made more sense for us financially in terms of total dollars fundraised. At this time, we are not sure if this will be a permanent or temporary change."

Yup, gotta get back to recruiting AFTER LOI day. Do they think I'm new?

So they want your money, as long as it's convenient for them to get it. Same as it ever was.

You would prefer they wasted money to placate your ego?

And you realize that recruiting never stops, right?

How many times will they ask him to make it over to Pullman with just 10 days notice for a newly announced 730pm start?

And if he doesn't they will imply he is a sh**ty fan for not doing so (a golden oldie going back to the Walden era)

The condescending recruiting excuse they gave is an odd one for how crappy recruiting has been since they set foot in Pullman.

....and you can say the PDX market of the fanbase is "coddled" but they have a branch campus that is loaded over by newly promoted Sgt Schulz.

I was referring more to not having multiple Friday night events, but point taken.

I find it odd a school that is running a $30M deficit and has branch campus located in Vancouver feel isn’t worth the time and money having an event there. Maybe the lack of support from SW Washington is their own doing. Moving the event out of Vancouver and putting it at Nike’s Headquarters was an odd decision. Now they’re just not holding one at all. Feel like they are abandoning a lot of donors with this approach. Maybe the cost doesn’t justify the means for them. Maybe they have come to conclusion that SW Washington Cougs money goes to the Blazers, Timbers, Thorns and Seahawks.

Yes, recruiting never stops, but our coach just said at his press conference said they are going to recruit the state. They are coming for you. Having Coug Night in Vancouver is a perfect way to get the coaches in the buildings of schools in SW Washington and connect with that community. Wazzu is broke, they shouldn’t doing anything that shut doors to donors.

I mean they had an auction item to watch a NBA game in Portland.

basically they lost an extra $1000 that I would have spent bidding on stuff while half loaded.

Also, the other 3 events are basically at capacity already.

I know first hand that the Portland event always turned a decent profit, and was never upside down. This is 100% about not wanting to put the time and effort into making it happen. That's their prerogative, but I don't have to be happy about it.

I totally agree and I’ve spoken to a few who always attended.

I don't have a problem with them going to 3 places.

I do have a problem with them choosing Tri Cities over Portland Ore/Vancouver WA/SW Washington area.

1. That area has MORE PEOPLE, MORE WSU FANS, then Tri Cities.

2. As a bigger population base, that area produces more D1, P5, P12 recruits, that will goto WSU.

3. That area, Portland, Seattle, and the greater LA/So Cal, is, should be WSU's PRIMARY recruiting base.

4. Portland/SW WA area has MORE money.

5. The events in the Portland/SW WA area have always turned a profit, raised money, probably raised more money then Tri Cities.

I know Tri Cities, is important too. I'm not advocating cutting Tri Cities. But the Portland/SW WA area is MORE important then Tri Cities.

The reasons WSU is doing this:

1. They are right that WSU needs to prioritize, and needs that extra week of recruiting.

If it's me, I take turns holding it at Portland 1 year, then Tri Cities next year, and back and forth, instead of cutting 1 of them. That way, have 3 events, 1 week, more recruiting, and still cover both areas.

2. Dickert/Chun are doing this because they promised that they are RECRUITING WA. In their minds it more important to recruit Tri Cities(WA), then Portland(Ore), because recruiting WA is more important then recruiting Ore, even tho such a strategy will continue to get them lesser recruits, then the Portland recruits.

3. WSU probably thinks Ore, Ore St, Nike, etc, has a stranglehold on Portland.

4. WSU is Lazy in this 1 area. They perceive Tri Cities, as low, easy to pick fruit. They think it will cost more, more travel, etc, and that the cost not worth it, and that it's easier to pick the low hanging fruit of Tri Cities.

While there might be some things that might temporarily be ok for WSU doing this(What they are I don't know except for 1 more recruiting week.), overrall this is should be a losing strategy.

mik,

Your 5 and 4 points (why are they renumbered?) ignore two important facts.

1. All 3 cities you prefer as hosts of these events have elected pedophile mayors (and Portland has multiple times). Need one location safe from pedophiles.
2. Maybe just like how members of the previous staff were adamant about the Vax, perhaps this WSU staff is adamant about pumping their own gas?
