Cam Ward

Can we keep these WRs? Meaning are they going to go back into the portal for more NIL $$$ ?

Can play QB

And love the transfer WRs.
Yes. I really love the yards after catch Kelly & Williams are getting. Any word on Victor. He was on crutches on the sideline after he got hit holding the snap. I thought hitting the snap holder was a penalty. Anyway, hope he is back soon. He has been playing great.

That would be for 11 of 12 teams, but pac gotta pac.

Just checked the rule book. The penalty is to prevent injury to the holder, yet here we are.🤷🏼‍♂️

It sure looked like the beav just stomped him.

It was a Pac-12 crew, charged with insuring that the Beavs "against the world" narrative continued, as best they could. The underdog does not get the calls in this conference, never have, they must win the hard way, which we did. Don't you remember Minshew vs USC, Larry Scott was actually on the phone to insure that the officiating crew made the wrong targeting call. Of course, caught red handed, they subsequently admitted that they made a huge mistake, but .... nevermind, the "right" team won the game, not the team who actually earned it. So Sorry, it won't happen again!

I won't miss it!

The last TD drive for the beavs, what hadn’t been pi all game for us all of a sudden was (Twice). Stopped the clock, kept their drive going. Typical pac 12.

I’m really surprised we got the onside kick to go our way.

The refs were actually pretty good the entire game then they had to muck it up and the end and make shitty PI calls. The one on the beavs sideline was the right call the other two were awful.

I actually didn't mind the PI calls that much. I will say that failing to call PI when their DB was pulling on Kelly's hand should have been called if they were going to call the late ones on us.

The University of BigShot is paying WR’s $1-2 Million.

I hate it but, what would you do if Your phone starts ringing? What would you council your kid to do?

Also noticed…Cam isn’t the teams leading rusher anymore! Hopefully Watson and Jenkins can build on the improvement Saturday.

Just looked at the stats. On the net Watson overtook him (thankfully). For total gained Ward is still ahead....

Cam just received Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. His first and hopefully not his last.
No offense to Cam, but he didn't deserve it. Josh Kelly had three absolutely spectacular plays this week. Biggest impact I've seen fron Cougar receiver since Gabe demolished Arizona in 2015.

Good job. I was not a big fan of his last year but now I am. And he seems like such a nice, respectful young man in the interviews. That said, Good on Dickert for getting Mateer into the games, if only for a few plays. As I think I posted on another thread, that handoff to Ward then getting the first down catch from him was like WTF was that? Who draws that up? QB to QB?

He's versatile and athletic enough to be used like the Saints incorporate Taysom Hill into the offense with the added bonus that I'd bet the COUGS actually trust him to throw it. That's all I have to say about that.

And he will. They were running a fake wildcat throw for him that was blown dead with a penalty. It’s awesome when you have a running QB like him that can actually sling it - we are going to see at least one TD pass from him this year in a big game where the defense will get sucked in and a receiver or TE will be wide open.

Yeah good comparison. I really like Taysom Hill. The guy brings it.

True, but the two one-handed catches and his catch and YAC when he kept at least 5 defenders from tackling him were both the result of his phenomenal play. It's not like he just ran the plays and ended up great numbers. He earned them with super effort.
Josh was incredible and I won't take anything away from his performance. But those passes were right on the money even though Kelly was well covered on those one-handers. I give the award to Cam because he made big plays throughout the game and really only had the one mistake (fumble). You could tell the entire team was feeding off the confidence Ward displayed all game long.

Glad Cougar

As to etown's remark about Cam not deserving it I couldn't disagree more. I think if you had to make that argument for Kelly it would be that he deserved it more, but certain Cam has to be in the conversation as either 1a or 1b.

I thought Haberer should have gotten it he had a better QB rating.

Cam's QBR rating in the NCU game was about 300(Normal, average is about 100 for a average QB)

Just for comparison even WSU's best QB's, their average QBR rating is about 155, 165,175,185 per game.

And in that NCU, 300 QBR game, Cam was nowhere near the 82% completion percentage, stats, etc, that Cam had against Oregon St, one of the best Defenses in the country.

So altho that other QB might have technically had the technically slightly better QBR rating, Cam probably technically better, deserved the award.

The 300 QBR number is what I heard a Radio Announcer say that Cam had.

Only one player deserved the award for the week: Josh Kelly. That's not a knock on Cam either. He played great and I have zero complaints. But the offensive player of the week should have been the receiver making circus catches.

No, it should be Gomness. None of Ward or Kelly's plays happen if he doesn't snap the ball.

Cameron Ward-From the Wing T to Top College Quarterback

A young man dreamed of becoming a college quarterback. In high school, he played quarterback for the football team, a team that ran an antiquated offensive scheme. This scheme was so old that if you cut the playbook open with a knife, dust would fly out.

As a high school senior, this young man only averaged a dozen pass attempts per game. It's not exactly a fun offense for the players, or the fans for that matter. Nonetheless, the young quarterback was able to secure a single scholarship to a small university located in San Antonio, TX Incarnate Word, an FCS team.

That young man is Cameron Ward.

The year was 2020. The COVID pandemic was in full swing. The FCS limited teams to six games that season. Incarnate Word was coached by Eric Morris, a disciple of the Air Raid passing offense.

For a kid who ran the Wing T in high school, Ward really broke out of his shell as a quarterback with the Air Raid. In that half-season of 2020, Ward took the FCS by storm, throwing for 2260 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only four INTs…in just six games!

For his stellar performance, Ward won the Jerry Rice Award as the most outstanding freshman in the FCS.

The next season at Incarnate Word, Ward led the Cardinals to a 10-3 record after posting even better stats for a full season:

· 4648 yards

· 47 TDs

· 10 INTs

· 65% completion pct.

Ward was named the 2021 Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Yearand 2nd Team FCS All-American.

When Morris was hired as Offensive Coordinator at Washington State, Ward followed him to Pullman. As soon as he arrived on campus in the Palouse, Ward was penciled in as the starter for the Cougars. He immediately established a reputation as leader, by helping the WSU coaching staff with the transition to the Air Raid.

Ward worked hard to get to know his teammates on a personal level and to establish camaraderie.

Also, Ward is low-key but is all business. He is continually working to improve ALL his skills, from fundamentals to leadership to consistency. Ward can drop dimes to his receivers with the greatest of ease, is accurate as a guided missile, and can throw a cupcake through a brick wall while on the move.

And, as he channels his inner Patrick Mahomes, he can throw passes with a side-arm motion to make something out of nothing when under intense pass rush.

In 2022, in his first season as an FBS quarterback, Ward passed for 3231 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 9 INTs. In addition, he added five rushing TDs as the Cougars posted a 7-6 record.

Before the start of this season, Ward had thrown 94 touchdown passes and 23 INTs in three years of college ball.

So far this season, Ward ranks #3 in the FBS in passing at 347 yards per game and has thrown for 1389 yards, 13 touchdown passes, and zero INTs (in 141 pass attempts) through four games. He has completed 74% of his passes. In addition, Ward has added three touchdowns on the ground and has thrown for over 400 yards twice this season. And, he has thrown four TD passes in each of the last two games.

His stat line vs. #15 Oregon State on Saturday: 28/34 passing (82%), 404 yards, 4 TDs and he added a rushing touchdown (according to ESPN.com). Coming into the game, the Beavers were a Top 15 defense, allowing 260 total yards and 11 points per game. The #21 Cougars racked up 528 total yards of offense in a 38-35 win.

He knows the tradition and standard that the quarterback position has produced over the years at WAZZU: Jack Thompson, Drew Bledsoe, Jason Gesser, Mark Rypien, Timm Rosenbach, Ryan Leaf, Luke Falk, and Gardner Minshew.

Cameron Ward relishes the quarterback position and understands what is required. So far, in 2023, mission accomplished.

The spin move TD that made 3 or 4 OSU players resemble keystone cops might have been the best of the bunch. One of the best receiver performances I have seen from a player in a Cougar uniform in a long time.

Actually, not too fast.

CBS Sports just rated the Top 10 QB's in the country. Ward is # 5.

Personally, if the Cougars keep winning, Ward stays healthy and producing, I predict Ward will be a day 1 NFL pick.

If you are referring to Gordon, his biggest problem was that the team was worse than the seasons before...even if it wasn't all his fault. The UCLA meltdown was one for the ages and despite all the first half points....he was bad in the fourth quarter when it mattered. I was at Rice-Eccles in 2019 and he was mediocre against a good defense. He fell victim to our Berkeley curse, where it seems like we often underperform there. Like so many other WSU QB's, he sucked against UW. The other Cougs on that list either led us to 9+ win seasons or were in the national eye for a couple years. Jack Thompson and Mark Rypien played and started in the NFL. Gordon did none of that.

Gordon was a pleasant surprise, but there was a reason that Leach brought in Minshew in 2018. Much like Alex Brink, Gordon put up stats but he didn't elevate the team overall with his play. Notice that Brink wasn't in that quote either.

You think he will be a first rounder? That’s day one…or are you thinking round two-three?

It’s going to be a tall order to get drafted in the first round with all the QBs that will be on the board, assuming he goes after this season. As far as where he ranks now, he’s probably anywhere from 7-15. I haven’t seen recent projections but guessing most would have him in the 3rd-6th round right now. In a lighter QB draft class maybe he’d be a lot higher. Maybe also a reason for him to stick around his Sr year. I don’t think there’s any question he will get drafted though.

Cam has had a good to great season so far, two wins over ranked teams is impressive. However, in the end where he is drafted and where he ranks in Cougar history depends upon how he does the rest way. There are 3 difficult road games left, UCLA, Oregon, and UW, and needless to say he needs to win the other 5. But ultimately it comes down to winning big games on the road. Win 1 of three of those big games, is good, 2 of 3 is great, 3 of 3, which is next to impossible, would be off the charts and put him in the all time great category. He is not there yet, and there is still a long season ahead. Each win moves him up a notch. In the meantime enjoy the ride and let’s hope this team continues to improve each week. Up next is UCLA, a solid team, that should win 7-9 games, and the Cougs don’t have a great winning history in LA, a win next week would be a huge step forward. And the Cougs will be underdogs.
