Canzano: Pac-12 exploring +4

a few quotes from the article...

• Several Pac-12 sources say they’re confident the conference will match or beat the Big 12’s announced $31.6 million annual media-rights distribution figure. On Friday, one well-placed conference source called being in the vicinity of that number “a layup.”

• One athletic director in Las Vegas this week for the women’s tournament told me he won’t be surprised when the Pac-12 beats the Big 12’s number. Said the AD: “We have better schools, better markets and better ratings.”

SMU, SDSU, UNLV and another midwest school to partner with SMU make the most sense. Memphis? Tulane? Rice? I think the idea would be adding that 9am game to the mix on a weekly basis. Tulane is interesting from my view.
Tulane is really only interesting as a partner to SMU. They really don’t bring anything to the PAC-12.

The real surprise in that article is that UNLV is not considered a candidate due to its “academic profile.” If that’s what they believe, why did they even talk to Fresno and Boise? UNLV blows the truck driving school doors off of BSU academically.

If they’re still concerned with academic fit, the only G5 Midwest school that makes sense is Colorado state, but as the article says…they don’t do much for market share.

I like Tulane if and only if SMU is coming to the party.

Tulane has a med school, they are in the Big Easy...after Las Vegas, what better city than New Orleans?

Tulane is upper tier academically. Not quite Stanford but highly regarded.

Nice facilities. Baseball stadium is top flight. Football stadium is smallish but nice.

Worse places to visit than NOLA. Go there a couple times per year. Way more entertaining than Vegas imho. Just know what neighborhoods to avoid and then laissez les bons temps rouler.

This is nuts. UNLV is R1. That doesn't meet our academic profile, while SDSU (tier 2 does)? That said, I still want SDSU. I have officially decided that Sgt Shulz is a F-ing idiot. Charlie Chun too = oops, sorry. Look out your windows dudes. We are a couple of stupid choices from obscurity.

Tulane? WTF. How far is New Orleans from Pullman? Tulane has 14,000 students. Their stadium seats 30,000. F-that. SMU seats 32,000. Maybe Sgt Shulz wants a school that seats less than WSU. Those two fit the bill. CSU's seats 41,000. SDSU, 34,500. UNLV has moved to the Raiders stadium. Capacity what the F-ever but twice ours.

The Pac 10 needs all the Western US metro areas it can get. Tulane? Wow.

I would go after Nebraska and Kansas
If the money is the same as the Big 12, and if the PAC coastal schools will sign a 10 year, strong GOR, the PAC commish should call Kansas. Kansas is a blue blood BB school with a national brand (now spending hundreds of millions on its FB program) and it is an AAU member school like most of the PAC. If KU accepts, then call Oklahoma St. Complete game changer.
Regarding Nebraska, the PAC can call, but no one is walking away from BIG dollars.

The media deal would have to be larger than the Big 12’s on an annual basis, and also cover their Big 12 exit.
And, we don’t know what the Big 12’s contract looks like. Apparently the ACC’s GOR would still apply if teams left the ACC…so if Clemson jumped to the SEC, Clemson’s media money would still go to the ACC. At least for now.

C'mon Ed, put down the bong. Suggesting Nebraska is just stupid, unless you are joking. Kansas? Look at a map. Why would they even consider the PAC unless our money was way better? Which it won't be.

The PAC has no leverage with the Power 5 schools. Our media contract will be mediocre at best. No current Power 5 school is going to consider the PAC. Thus we backfill with the MWC teams. SDSU and UNLV to start. This is such a f-ing no brainer. WTH is wrong with Kwaitkoff (or whatever) and the Pac-10 Presidents/AD's? do they think we are desirable to other P5 programs? Do they think that SMU and Tulane are going to move the needle? Christ they would have snatched up by the Big-12 if they had anything to bring to the table.

Loyal, put down the bottle. I would not be surprised if our media contract looks different from the other conferences, mostly because I'd be very, very disappointed if streaming was not a big part of it. As to the dollar amount, and how the money is shaped...that waits to be seen. If a streaming platform or platforms are part of this thing, it will be the first contract of its kind & scope. Those take a while to work out when you can't just "cut & paste" from the previous contract, and media lawyers are no more competent than any other professional group. Again, assuming that streaming is a big part, it may not be an exaggeration to say that the contract will be groundbreaking from a couple of perspectives, again depending upon how it is structured. So just the grunt work of getting the agreement finalized will take time, even after an agreement in principle.

I have no inside info on the PAC deal. But I have had a fair amount of second hand exposure to conventional media deals over the years. Those who I know that do that sort of thing for a living are really interested to see what comes out of this, because several folks have told me that if it is not some half-baked mishmash, it could be a model (or at least a starting point) for everybody else.

The devil (and the delays) are in the details. In the mean time, my day job is keeping me busy.

Nebraska is not leaving the cash flo that the Big Ten has provided to them. They are not happy with their lack of success in the Big Ten, but they are never leaving that kind of coin, ever! It is now, only about the money.
