Yesterday, I listened to a local sports talk show here in Knoxville, TN as they were bellyaching about another Volunteer loss. The subject of Mike Leach came up which perked my ears. In 2017, this particular host was adamantly opposed to hiring Leach during the last coaching vacancy and railed ad nauseum about how he would not be a good fit at the university.

Now, he is singing a different tune. He said he was wrong about Leach and acknowledged that he can actually coach. Really? This idiot finally realizes that? Leach has only won everywhere he has been. As I mentioned in a previous thread, that’s who I thought Tennessee should have called first. Of course, I’m glad they didn’t because Leach would have made it even more difficult for my UK Wildcats; furthermore, he would have won big in the SEC. Yet, the narrow minded UT administration chose an unproven DC from Alabama to take the reigns for them. How’s that working out for you, Vols?

Go Wildcats & Go Cougs!

Well I’m glad he’s still at WSU, but if anyone thinks the guy can’t coach after a track record of 15 bowl games and what not with multiple double digit win seasons, heisman ballot players and 1st round draft picks.... they are an idiot. Plain and simple. They are stupid people who don’t know a damn thing about football.

Amen!

This guy’s argument against Leach was that his system was a “gimmick” and that he had a “goofy” personality. Well, give me a system that puts points on the board, wins ball games, and goofiness all day long! Personally, I love Coach Leach’s matter-of-fact communication style and his hilarious sense of humor.

The wishbone is a "gimmick". What Chip Kelly ran at Oregon was a gimmick to the die hard purest. What is interesting the NFL may have ruined Chip. His offense looks nothing like what he ran at Oregon. At UCLA he seems more conventional, not using all the space on the field.

CougEd, you’re right about Kelly. From what I saw last year and in the first two games this year, I’m at a loss. It’s not like UCLA is short of athletes. His coaching is a shell of what it was when he was at Oregon. Chip Kelly along with Rick Pitino, when he was coaching at Kentucky, are examples of two coaches who, in hindsight, probably wish they had never left their respective jobs where they enjoyed huge success and were the toast of the town.

Cat....that is a good comparison between Rick and Chip. And be careful when you refer to me as "correct". :)

Just a couple things to note regarding Chip's time at Oregon: he was fortunate to step in and have a couple heisman candidate players (one who would eventually win it) at the QB postion; he had an award winning running back (Lamichael James) for most of his head coaching timeframe there; Oregon would eventually receive NCAA sanctions for cheating (using BS "recruiting services to basically pay players to come to OR). So, I would argue that Chip probably doesn't have the quality of athletes at UCLA that they were buying at Oregon, and he's probably (hopefully) wised up about cheating at the college level which presumably means he's not getting the players he would otherwise have if he were still buying recruits.

Leach's system is super gimmicky and wouldn't work in the SEC where they play real defense. Programs like UT don't need to resort to that, they can just recruit real athletes to play real football.

Leach is also a big jerk who doesn't care about his players. He locks them in sheds and sprays them with a hose in the dead of winter.

Total liability and headache Tennessee and anyone else in the SEC doesn't need.

And he is a raving liberal. And as he would say about our mascot, the Cougar would make a mess out of a volunteer.

leach is just honest doesn't bs around or play politics and has a dry sense of humor, nothing goofy about that.

I suppose the media prefers a slick used car salesman who like to bs
Correction: Chris Peterson never sold used cars. Made his money off of the trucking industry.

Fab5Coug, this thinking is why Tennessee has been mired in mediocrity and irrelevance for over a decade.

Good point about the sanctions. I had completely forgotten about those.

UT really is much like UW not long ago. They have some swag from a moderately recent (I know, 90’s are not recent o HS kids) NC, with decent finishes over a long time, but no real national relevance. Seem destined to play second fiddle to the real power programs (USC for UW, Bamma, UF and now UGA for UT). They both lost long term coaches and became mired in the coaching shuffle leading to loss of what little identity they had. Hell UT had Payton Manning and never won their own division until after he left. Now they are entitled programs who overestimate their own relevance and the prestige of their HC jobs .

Regardless of your attitude about Tennessee, if you ever have a chance to watch a game there then do it. The fifteen minutes before the kickoff and that incredible Tennessee Walker of the equine persuasion are worth whatever you spend to get there. Oh...and they are scary serious about college football.

Don't know if this is fair to Tennessee. They never went 0-12 and their natty was legit, not shared BS. They also have a bigger stadium and make more money than UW. Otherwise, though, the comparison is right on point, and I'm mainly just mentioning all of this to call out these great facts regarding UW.

Yep, I'm fine with these SEC and other programs having all of these ideas about Leach. Can keep going another 15 years, hopefully.

I have been to several games there, and without question, it is a tremendous atmosphere. The problem is that it is has an entitled and delusional fan base. The Vols no longer can go in and raid neighboring states such as South Carolina and Georgia as they once did. The emergence of Clemson as a national power, the upgrade of South Carolina’s program, and the juggernaut Kirby Smart has built at Georgia are keeping the elite talent home in those respective states. This program is not what it once was in terms of being a national contender. Poor coaching hires have contributed heavily to their downfall. I hope it stays that way for a long time!

A lot truth here. One irony is the program was not totally in the ditch with Butch Jones. Not saying he did not need to be fired, but at least he did not leave the cupboard totally bare for the next guy,. If they had made the right hire they would probably be seeing some hope right now.

However after they finally get rid of this current rube that they have for a coach they are probably now in store for a prolonged major rebuild. Really a dangerous game they are playing with their fan base. Tennessee is changing with pro sports in Nashville etc.. How long they will still get 100 K people to watch a bad football team will be interesting.

No tears for UTjr. they deserve everything that they are now getting.

"But but but.......Tennessee has never won the Heart Of Dallas Bowl!"
