Now moved into 49th spot in Kenpom rankings. Which have us as #5 in Pac12 at this point. Computer model of course but folks do keep an eye on it.

Boise St and SDSU are in the top 75, UCSB is top 100 with Weber State coming in just outside the top 100 so our non-conference is not complete garbage and will provide opportunity to move up.

You're right and USC game in early December at home will be important for sure.

Interestingly enough (as least to me), Coach Smith's former team, San Francisco, is currently 34. Virginia is at 61. The uw is 140. Seattle U is 179. EWU is 245. Idaho is 353.

Where is Winthrop WSU's next opponent? I would guess about #33 to #48, as they are a semi perenial powerhouse semi NCAA tourny team semi every other year.

That probably will be the toughest non con game on WSU's schedule. They went to the NCAA tourny, 2nd round, sweet 16, last year, and won their conference, was first in their conference last year.

I suspect, believe that it will be a semi close game, that WSU semi will semi probably win.

That opponent is going to be the toughest non con test.

When, if WSU wins, passes that test, WSU will be ranked TOP 25, and probably top 29 in Ken Pom.

Winthrop is currently 178.

Winthrop is currently 178.

Thats a shock. Winthrop was picked, projected along the lines of what I was talking about by the experts.

That would be like Creighton, Gonzaga, etc, doing that.

Winthrop has, is been a Traditional Creighton almost every year.

Experts had the WSU vs Winthrop game circled as the toughest non con game for WSU.

Shocking.

So with that in mind why is Winthrop 178, 2-2, etc? What's going on with Winthrop?

I’m not sure I would call Winthrop a NCAA powerhouse. They have made the NCAA tourney twice in the last ten years and in their history they are 1-11 in the tournement the only win coming in 2007. Would have made the tourney the year it was cancelled!

Well I was not aware of the recent history but before the last 10 year period you mentioned, they were a semi traditional team that would goto the NCAA tourney once every about 1, 2, 3 years, and 4 years at most, and on the years they didnt goto NCAA, they would usually make the NIT, most of the time.

It was uncommon, rare for them to go more then 1 year, or any year without making some sort of post season tournament, whether NCAA, NIT, CBI, CIT, etc. And they usually almost always had a winning record, and a winning conference record.

They are a great, good team. That's been their history since the about 70's. 80's, 90's, early 2000's.

Now recently that might have changed.

Also Winthrop played a good, close game vs WSU in the NCAA tourny. Cant remember if they won or loss tho. (False, misremembered, was a blow out win by WSU(about 70-40)

Also the EXPERTS said that last year, Winthrop won their conference, went to NCAA tourny, and the EXPERTS, were predicting, projecting, extrapolating that Winthrop would win their conference, goto NCAA tourny this year again.

The EXPERTS, had circled the WSU vs Winthrop game as the toughest non con game on the schedule.

At least this is what I heard, understood from how the radio broadcast crew in 1 of the games, starting saying that the SUPPOSED EXPERTS were saying all that.

So again, why is Winthrop 2-2, 178th, etc? What is going on? What are the EXPERTS missing? Etc.

Just saw the official game preview said that WSU beat Winthrop Handily(about 70-40), guess I misremembered, memory was faulty on that. Was a semi long time ago tho.

The preview said that Winthrop was 23-2 last year, so again why is Winthrop 2-2, 178, etc? Whats going on?

Arizona looked pretty good last night, the pac 12 is looking pretty strong right now. Gonzaga/UCLA should be an interesting match up tomorrow.

Yeah...between a coaching change and losing 4 seniors from last year's team (including the reigning Big South Player of the Year), there has definitely been a few growing pains. Expectations are still high, and this team is still favored to win the Big South, but to expect a season as good as last year (going 23-2 and getting a 12 seed in the NCAAs) is probably a bit much. And for as good as Winthrop has been many times in the last 22 years (before 1999, the program was never good), the program has only finished in the top 100 in KenPom twice (2006 & 2007). The 2008 team that faced Washington St. in the NCAAs finished just outside the top 100. And someone earlier in the thread thought that game was close...it was tied at the half. But the 2nd half was a bloodbath.

Thanks for the information. We understand how losing a coach, and players, as Tony Bennett was the coach of that team. He left one year later, and WSU has never been the same. It looks as if WSU finally hired another great coach, but it is still early in his time at WSU.

After tonight, I wish your team well.
