On guys staying. Basically the whole OLine, Stephen Hall, Kris Hutson.

Guys who seem to warrant them but are missing: Buddah, Carlos Hernandez, Ethan OConner etc.

Wonder if that means they are out of here…or just waiting to see what $ is left over from John staying or going

Is Hutson coming back? He's played five seasons.

I didn’t see Fa’amoe from the OL and he’s a Jr. , would be great to get him back.

Crap. Love experienced OL, especially Tackles
We are only losing our best players...love college football.

We need to follow the NFL...the college game needs to be able to franchise tag a player, and if they leave WSU for example gets matched what the kid is getting from his new team, plus developmental costs like three years of tuition and room and board.

Second, the collectives need to put in a non compete clause for one year. If they sign a collective agreement for two years but want to bail, they can but they cannot get paid by their new team for a year.

The wild wild west stuff has to go....

Not sure the value on O'Connor or Hernandez. Those two may be more valuable as Cougs than for other teams. But who knows where the economics are these days.

I've been thinking the same, but not sure how that is possible with the current NCAA rules/regulations, state laws, university policies (especially for state schools) can intersect with the NIL. As it sits right now, the NIL is the backdoor to creating a semi-pro league.

Essentially we have the NCAA itself to blame for this. They got greedy taking money using players' NIL without identifying a path forward. I think they thought they could get away with it forever. I do think the USSC got it right, but the NCAA is Foxtrotting the whole thing by not identifying a path forward to keep things stable.

Overall, this is a case of the love of money making things worse. The NCAA, the TV networks, the colleges, the players, etc. all trying to make a buck and letting the pageantry, tradition, history, and all be destroyed for sake of the almighty $$.

(And yes, I'm one of those red state, bitter clingers that hate what money has done to college sports.)

I like your franchise tag idea or some version of it but there will need to be some sort of collective bargaining agreement in place first.
Speaking of restraint of trade - how the hell does the NFL get away with not taking any kids into the League until they are 3 years out of HS?!

Don't need to be from a "red state" to hate what money has done to college sports! That's all I have to say about that

It is the new Pac 2/12...it is in their contract they sign...their national letter of intent. The team can franchise tag 2 players.....the players don't need to sign it....move on to one who will.

It needs to be:
Player X on WSU gets an offer from Oregon for 250k for 2025
Player X transfers and signs contract
Oregon pays WSU 25% of the contract to offset the loss of a 250k talent.

There should also be consideration of when. A freshman may warrant 25% and a junior 35% or something of that effect as juniors and seniors are much more developed and ready to deliver.

Raw idea, but the team needs to have some sort of compensation or protection to not just be robbed blind (if they care about lower level teams staying moderately competitive)

NIL is fine... but they (the NCAA) could just not allow transfers without sitting out 1 year

Restraint of trade isn’t the solution, I don’t believe.

They’re employees, now. Stop pretending. Start paying taxes on your earnings like everyone else.

The upcoming player strike and collective bargaining agreement is gonna be special!

have they been ruled employees? if so why do they have to be students? other employees dont have to go to classes and I am araid this is where the whole mess is headed

Pretty sure they are paying taxes which for some of them is probably quite the surprise.

You could restrain them by having them sign a "no compete" clause. Gotta sit a year.

I dunno, maybe that could only remotely be doable WITHIN a conference but not from, say the big 12 to the SEC. That's all I have to say about that.

Are non-competes even enforceable anymore?

It’s gonna have to get messy, blow up and re-form from top to bottom if this has any chance of succeeding, IMO

The best, most practical, most enforceable, and most effective restraint on the current system would be roster limits, but the NCAA has already gone the wrong direction with those. They should have reduced to 70-75, not increased to 105. There should also be some sort of mechanism to provide compensation when the big teams poach from smaller ones. The NFL gives compensatory picks. In college, it would have to be either cash or temporary adjustments to roster limits.

But, neither will happen. The networks would rather keep the talent with the big market teams, so they keep returning to the CFP and maximizing advertising. They really don't care if we go back to the old days, when blue bloods could stockpile players on the bench just to keep them from playing elsewhere. It will not be long before the Ohio States and Alabamas are paying the entire roster, giving money to kids deep on the depth chart, so they have to choose between getting well paid for doing nothing or transferring and maybe getting nothing.

Honestly, if I'm a coach, I'm looking for those kids who are turning their back on the money because they want to play.
