Anyone going? I am heading to Snohomish for a track meet today, but have to admit, I would probably skip it. Not sure if it’s all the transferring , NIL or I am just getting old but I can’t really get excited about driving to Pullman for a scrimmage.

I agree. It appear that it's just not special anymore. Plus, you'll see everything recapped on YouTube before the day is over.

Truth be told, I'm more excited about winning the series against Santa Clara than today's scrimmage. Especially with Mr. Ward running the show.

If I get outta this track meet in time I'll beat feet to Pullman and catch it. Looking forward to watching a little football again. Gonna be a nice day on the Palouse. These have been few and far between.

Couldn’t make it but watching. Ward is ditching his bad habits…climbing pocket nicely. Like these 3 backs, 23 is legit. The transfer receivers look good. Sharp so far.

Mateer with right mindset, but Cam throwing the better deep balls… and probably has the better receivers

While i am in the camp Mateer should get a legit opportunity to win the job, Ward looks great. Looks like they’ve really coached his happy feet bad habits out of him. Stepping up in the pocket big time. Glad to see it.

Arbuckle will end up being a great hire. Unfortunately we may only have him for a couple years.

That’s fine. Then we take Drew Hollingshead

Young guys and transfers are big contributors. Orion Peters not playing but here in his jersey. Watson looks like RB 3 almost which is a good thing with how good he is.

Love this 3 headed monster in the backfield. So much better shape than last year at RB. Watson looks like he’s slimmed up a bit too.

Maybe he ends up being the next HFC if/when CJD wins big with the Cougs?
Side note. Dickert is phenomenal. I’ve been to a lot of spring games, they are usually slop fests. I went last year and thought they looked sharp. That’s gone up a notch so far today IMO. The PAC-12 is going to be tough this year but we are in good hands with CJD.

Cam has looked great. Mateer looks alright with good potential. Thinking Arbuckle is helping Cam a lot. Can’t gauge the line with this format but they look bigger and more athletic. DT, Nunnally, Jenkins, etc look to be legit weapons. Peters back will help too. I think D is day to day on who will play.

I’m not sure we have much of an OLine but having your offense in rythm is a great way to mask OLine deficiencies. The quick decisions by the QBs and skill guys being in synch really helps the OLine as they don’t have to be hero’s.

Cam and Mateer both started out Equal.

Mateer went 5-5, then fell behind Ward, by going 5 out of 12 after going 5-5.

Ward then EXPLODED, went about 10 out of 13,14. Then Ward made 3,4 DEEP BALLS, showed a great accurate arm.

Mateer didn't keep pace, and to be a little fair to Mateer, his WR's TURNED OVER the ball 1,2 times.

But after Ward's performance he should be considered the favorite to win the starting job.

That said it should be a open competition.

RB corp: Schlenbaker and Watson both were consistently getting more yards, but for schenblaker, he was going against a worse defense, and didn't have to split carries.

The reason Watson technically looked better then Jenkins, is he was used in better spots, opportunities then Jenkins, and so had more total yards, and 2 TD's over Jenkins.

Jenkins was NOT stuffed even 1 time. Whereas Schlen and Watson were each STUFFED 2,3 times each.

And in short yardage, clutch 1.5, 2,3,3.5 yard to go situations, Jenkins converted, got first down each time, whereas Watson, Schlen each didn't convert 1,2 times each.

And Jenkins had 1,2,3 big gainers, and looked more ELECTRIC, then Watson, Schlen.

I would rank the RB's:

1. Watson and Jenkins tied for first.

2. Schlenbaker.

WR Corp:

Sheffield and Lincoln Victor were both AWESOME.

And Nunaly, looked better. And the ball was distributed pretty evenly to rest of WR's and most of the WR corp made 1,2 good plays.

Arbuckles, coaching, play calling looked good.

Defense. Altho the defense gave up big plays, the defense only gave up 7 points in first quarter, and the offense didnt break it open until late 2nd Quarter.

And the defense made some AWESOME STOPS, PLAYS, FORCED TURN OVERS.

And not when it did not matter, but when it really mattered, counted, etc.

The tackling and coverage looked good between some to a semi almost a semi lot of time.

Ron Stone and Brennan were ABSOLUTELY DOMINATING.

WSU's spring game team LOOKED BETTER then the other televised Pac 12 spring games.

I don’t know what to think about the lines. They blitzed, which was kinda crazy for a spring game.

I fear that if the OL takes a step forward it’s because the DL took a step backward.

From my seat the OLine didn’t have to do much because the offense was so in rythm. Different deal when your QB can’t get mashed I guess but thought the offense was on time and not giving defense much time to make negative plays.

This thread F'ng rocks!

Awesome intel. Hoping to catch some highlights on Youtube later.

Sounds like the common thread is the playcalling seems to be good. If anyone hasn't done so, I recommend going back and checking out the WKU vs Arkansas State(I think) highlights from their bowl game. It was a lot of fun to watch against a top 20 defense

It was a beautiful afternoon in Martin! I've been impressed with every single Dickert practice I've watched, and this one was no different. (There's always a lot of energy and enthusiasm in his practices, and always very little confusion in his practices and among his players. He may get more accomplished in his practices than any other coach I've ever watched.) Coaches and players both were having some fun out there, we had some good things happening out there on the field, and that's a good way to end spring ball. Couple things really stood out to me:
1. Our QBs are well-coached. All looked decisive and confident, made some nice plays, and knew what they were looking at and for out there. None of the QBs looked lost or confused out there, which is a first for spring ball.
2. Offensive play calling utilizes the center of the field nicely. VERY NICELY. Quick hitters down the center. Longer drags down the center. And all 4 QBs looked for it and made it work. That's going to give defenses fits.
3. I'm excited by our options at QB. Ward had a nice game. I think Mateer sees the field very well and goes thru reads quickly. This wasn't his best day slinging the ball, but he was plagued by more than his fair share of receiver drops which left him in a few holes and probably lead to few passes he'd like to have back. Brown is very good and looked sharp. We don't hear much about him, but he runs the offense well. I think Arbuckle is good at calling plays which compliment his QB's skills, and will make his QB's job a lot easier.

I remember last spring game Ward was not sharp throwing the ball over the middle or over the top. Completely different now. He threw lasers with guys in his face, stepping into the pressure. The fade route he threw was perfect. Gave his guy a chance to make a play on the ball, but not at all a risky throw.

Just my take on the QB's is that, Ward definitely looked improved from what we saw last year. He actually looks lightyears better. The guy is obviously talented and he showcased it last year but he was so Jekyl/Hyde with his consistency. Its apparent Arbuckle was the absolute right hire and it appears its paying dividends with Ward's improved play. Mateer was very sharp and yes, the WR's dropped many balls none more than Smithson. That dude had straight up butterfingers for hands Saturday. Mateer's deep ball pass were off but that touch will come with time and practice. He made excellent throws, the WR's just couldn't hang on to them.
