defense

Defense and what looked like confusion at time on the offensive end was disappointing. Announcers pointed to it but we didn't seem to come out with as much energy as we have seen.

Noah's year-over-year development is about as impressive as I can remember freshman-to-soph. That undercut injury is still bothering him. Scout is catching up with us as well.

Haven't really liked the offense very much, but I think the Frosh are hitting a bit of a wall. Rapp and DJ are needed and good point on the scout. Efe goes too much for the block at times but its all part of the learning experience.

The weak non-conference got us too jacked up now its back to reality.

Everyone in the league knows how to defend our offense now. Stop Bonton and make the rest of the team beat you. Noah is still hurting but he stepped up. No one else did.

The defense is really disappointing.

That couldnt possibly be it as according to a poster here, its the lack of Potential NBA Prospects.

Thats got to be what he means when he responds to a comment I made, and said that its surprising that all the NBA players are struggling.

Look, no disrespect to Bonton, and I hate singling him out, but our PG play is extremely poor. I mean, when you have a player like IB on the point, the other 4 guys can't help but to stop and watch him, because nobody knows where the play is headed. Is he going to throw up a wild runner? Pull up and shoot? Leave his feet and get forced to make a wild bail out pass when he's airborne?

Improving the PG next year and adding another shooter or 2 will solve a lot of our problems. The defense will improve, as our bigs are all extremely young and raw. It's our offense that needs the bump. We can't run anything with the PG play we're getting.

Bonton is comparable to what if Ike Iroegbu was on this team, instead of Bonton.

Also a poor mans version of Josh Akognon, Iverson.

Bonton is also a DOUBLE EDGED SWORD, WEAPON.

Pick your poison. Without Bonton, your not going to win very often.

With Bonton you will win some and lose some because of both his positive and negative things.

Part of the Negative is due to a lack of another Bonton, scorer, etc.

Yeah Efe, and AJ are producing, but without a HEALTHY Noah Williams, AJ, EFE COMBINED to help Bonton, your going to see struggling due to Bonton trying to do to much, and due to scouts, other teams zoning, using 1.5 players, double teams, a lockdown man to man defender, etc, to SHUT DOWN Bonton, and either force the other players to play well, or force Bonton into a bad decision of going 1 on 1,2,3,4,5, in order to try and score, because the other players arent getting it done.

The best situation, and maybe the only way to beat PAC 12 teams, is for:

1. Healthy starters that are: A. Noah Williams, EFE, AJ, Dischon Jackson/Vova.

2. For Bonton to play the 2,Shooting Guard, 2 Guard, Scoring Guard Spot, while supporting, backing up the PG, occasionally bringing the ball up, pass, etc, as a CO, BACK UP PG, COMBO GUARD.

So with that in mind you have, do the following:

1. PG: Rapp/Warren/Koulibaly/Bonton

2. SG: Bonton/Noah

3. Noah/AJ

4. EFE/Miller

5. Dischon Jackson/Vova.

A HEALTHY(Not Injured) lineup like that will win a lot of games.

Also if Bonton continues to be a double edged sword weapon and struggle after good play:

Then only for 1,2,3 games, you make Bonton 1st off the Bench as the best 6th man in Pac 12, that still plays a LOT of minutes, TO LIGHT A FIRE UNDER HIS BUT, and then after that, make him the starter again.

Until either:

1. Noah gets healthy.

2. Combined with AJ, EFE staying healthy.

3. Combined with making Rapp/Warren/Koulibaly the PG, and moving Bonton to the 2 Spot, back up/Co, combo PG.

Until those things things happen, then its going to be a INCONSISTENT Bag of BOTH Pac 12 wins, losses.

2 Extremes:

1. Bonton is perfect, etc

2. Bonton is terribly, horribly bad, etc, win more games without.

Anyone who suscribes to, believes in, thinks, etc, one of those 2 extremes doesnt know basketball, etc.

Huh? You are killing me. Who should he pass to? No one else on the team has any chance of creating a decent look except for Noah. The offense is anemic and they should be running more set plays to get specific looks for players, so to lay any of the last 5 losses at Bontons feet means you haven’t been watching or don’t know basketball... Does he make some bad plays, take some forced shots and have Ill advised turnovers from time to time, certainly... He absolutely has to force shots on this team.. You could pick any pointguard you want in the pac 12 and it would be no different.. The team is young. The level of talent has picked up in conference play.. The other guys aren’t doing anything because they can’t. If anything we should be asking why the coaching staff is not running more offensive sets to free guys up for shots..You know running shooters off multiple screens, pin downs to get the ball into the post..etc.. I assume it is not all about winning now and coaches are coaching to prepare players for future years... Stop looking for a scape goat and realize that the entire roster is a year or 2 away from seriously competing at this level.. sheesh

I think everyone’s expectations are way to high. Need I remind you that we started 3 freshman, a sophomore and a senior tonight. Our top 7 players included another 2 sophomores.. Colorado started 4 seniors and a junior with experienced players up and down the roster.. We are not playing Portland St anymore.. I understand it is frustrating watching the inconsistent play, from minute to minute and from half to half, but anyone expecting that we “should” be winning these games is delusional.. We are light years better as a program than anything I’ve seen over the past 8 or so years in Pullman..The talent, recruiting, and respectability seem to have returned which is evident in everyone’s expectations.. The wins will come with experience. Let’s enjoy seeing these kids grow together and put a positive spin on some of this..

That's all true but its high time that we go to set plays as you indicate. Smith is supposed to be a offensive guru

Actually, our offense is not as bad as you guys suggest. The bigger problem IMHO is the number of stupid passes that lead to turn overs. Turn overs have killed us in league play more than anything else. Hard to run any offense when you throw the ball without thinking.

I fully expected what I am seeing from a young team. We have two big's with great physical upside and motors that come with it. But they are a bit limited.

As to Bonton, with Pac 12 defenses they know how to play him, to limit how much he hurts us. And there are possessions where the ball is stuck in his hand. I would love to see them move him off the ball if only for a few possessions. Run him through off ball screens. Have him generate the offense from another position.

He has shown streaks of flat out brilliance, then there are the few times, and sometimes critical times he tries to make a play and it turns out at the wrong time.

Totally agree.. I just think the issue is more about the style of play that the freshman aren’t ready for then it is about Bonton.. Set plays would be far more helpful for this team, but does it stunt the long term growth towards how coach wants to play.. IDK.. I’m assuming he has chosen to sacrifice the now for future wins..

I'm not down on the team or the future. I expected a season like this. We stole some games early that, frankly, we should have lost. We're erratic, young, but we play hard. Our bigs need to develop, but that's why were able to get them to sign with us. They were raw.

This team will be significantly improved next season, providing that most of the young guys remain on campus and steer clear of the portal.
