He also had a DC bail halfway through a season. And when leadership was lacking on the field things quickly went off the rails. I’m not knocking Leach either but just because a coach isn’t a hard disciplinarian doesn’t mean there won’t be success.
I agree, which is why I prefaced my previous comment by saying that I wasn't making a direct comparison between Leach and Rolo.
Leach drove me crazy as an x's and o's coach. I felt his system could have been significantly harder to defend if he would have incorporated some modernized versions of the air raid. His stubbornness was frustrating, but it's also the fiber of his character. It's his way or the highway.
Do I think that's the ONLY way to succeed? No, but I do believe that your system has to be followed by everyone associated with the program. If weight room check-in is 5:30AM, you need to be there by 5:30AM. If you break team rules, you will be disciplined. If you're a coach and you're not getting it done, you get placed on a performance plan and fired if it's not corrected.
To date, Rolo's slate is completely clean from where I sit. I haven't seen enough to form the slightest opinion on him or his system. He's a likeable guy who seems to genuinely appreciate what he has in life. He took a hard line with JDL, and that's exactly what needed to happen. Players have transferred out, but that happened with Leach as MSU last season as well. It's common after a system overhaul.
If Rolo's style is that of a player's coach, I'm OK with that just as long as it's known throughout the program that if you screw off and aren't adhering to team rules, you're gone.
