Derick Phelps

An ok record but no conference championships. That ensures that he will retain any of Kent s staff

It didn't seem like there was as much player development the last couple of years as I would've hoped. Elleby's game got real sloppy by the end of the year, actually same for most of the players. On the other end of it, Acquaah really struggled at WSU last year but then emerged as the WAC Newcomer of the Year at Cal Baptist, where I assume he got some better coaching. That can all be pointed to the Kent regime coaching staff, the head man included, as not getting these players in the best position to succeed. Combine that with the lack of coherent offensive system and no real improvement in defense, I would say the whole coaching staff is largely responsible, assistant coaches included. And it's not like Seltzer-Haskins-Marrion were bringing in a high percentage of Pac-12 level players, IMO. I'd just as soon let Smith bring in a whole new staff. If he retains anyone, I'm okay with it...but won't be upset if he doesn't.

Seltzer has coached at places where the players developed. I am thinking that the issues were above the assistant coaches.

I remember Phelps as a player. Classic pass-first point guard.
I believe he handled the guards at USF. I could see them going after Pierre Crockrell but either way I really think we should expect to see a lot better players and overall play out of the position.
