Are roster spots getting tight? I can't remember how the Covid rules impact rosters, but 85/25 has to be making its way back. Why announce now?
Gets him on the market to sign in December. It doesn't make sense to stick around if he's not in line for much PT for the rest of this year. He can find a landing spot that will give him a chance to start. Why announce now?
I was wondering the same. Couldn't he play this week? Why announce now?
Just crazy- like Oregon's Mycah Pittman entering the portal 2 days before the Utah game with the team ranked #3 and a clear path to the playoffs (at that point in time). I'm fairly neutral about the portal, but it seems like it shouldn't be open during the season. There needs to be some minimum commitment to a program, IMO. What's next- a player entering at half-time?

I've read he got pissed over not getting many touches in their game against us and entered the portalThat's wild, I didn't know Pittman entered the portal.

I think players and coaches should have the same ability to leave whenever. Coaches come and go for better jobs all the time. Kids are showing the same level of commitment to the program the coaches are.
If they are student athletes, a student can leave school and transfer at any time.
And until a school lets a player enroll mid semester in order to play at half time, it isnt happening.
Texas Tech just hired a guy midseason. When was the last time that a coach quit one team to go join another team in the middle of a season or before the regular season was complete? "All the time" seems like an inappropriate descriptor.

So you found one instance where a position coach (OLB) left one program to be head coach at another school. Fair enough. Does that constitute "all the time"? I still can't think of a head coach making a move to the same position at another program during a season. I'm sure it has happened, but it is not common. I don't have a problem with players (or coaches) moving on, but I do think that it's best to wait out the season except in very unusual circumstances.
I agree that players should have the option to transfer without penalty. At the same time, there are going to be highs and lows during every season, and a 20-year old may benefit in the long run from having some guidelines in place to prevent a really rash decision in response to a bad week in practice. Everyone faces adversity, and quitting is one option, but most of the time these guys would probably be better served to work harder and earn more reps and more playing time. In a few years we will start to see surveys of outcomes of everyone who entered the portal, and I think it will be pretty sobering.I think players and coaches should have the same ability to leave whenever. I think we will see it… we already have. Generally it doesn’t do you any good to jump around from team to team. New culture, systems, etc. and there’s always going to be competition wherever they land, sometimes kids who aren’t as talented but 2-3 years in the program/system. Grass ain’t always greener, but sometimes people need to learn the hard way.Kids get 4 years of eligibility. That’s it. Why would you waste it being somewhere you don’t wanna be? Why would you continue to struggle? Get in where you fit in.
Is it possible a kid takes bad advice? Yes. Make a bad decision? Yes. But it’s their decision to make. Let them.
Also, there is no shortage of talent. More kids every year. As a coach, if kids want to leave, wish them well. There are more out there.
I think you will see kids enter the portal and wind up nowhere. They over estimate their talent and market value. Their ego may play a role. I bet phones were blowing up in July with kids looking for a scholarship to play. Only so many spots available…
Agreed- this is definitely happing, including players from elite schools who were getting on the field prior to transferring.I think you will see kids enter the portal and wind up nowhere. There was an article posted earlier this year about an underclassman from LSU who was getting solid minutes as a back-up, and played in their 2018 Fiesta Bowl win. He then entered the portal and watched LSU win the NT in 2019 on TV from a Community College in Texas. He never got back to D-1 and is out of organized football.
Over the years just think how many Apple Cups starters begun the season as the second or third string.
Sometimes in life the greatest ability is availability- just be there and good things can happen!
