Ah, Eichelberger. Greatest swim move in the history of Cougar football. Good Coug, but had no business out there in anything but spot duty. He was the number 10 prospect in the state of Washington that year? Then again, Washington high school football. Are you kidding? What about Bernard Wolfgramm, Matt Eichelberger, and Jordan Pu’u Robinson?
Beat, uw, beat USC keep most of coaching staff intact and will see a WSU dream recruiting class. Not sure who they'll take but we'll be turning down guys we would have been jumping for joy to get a few years back.
The role of the fat man is is to absorb multiple blockers so that other players in the defensive front can attack ball carriers and rush the quarterback. They do their job.
The overall point is that a large DT serves a purpose on any defense. Do they not offer Lolohea and just get the best 250 pound DE available? In 2016'..you had Barber, Tapa, Ekuale and McBroom with at least two other freshmen being groomed. Guess who led that bunch in tackles? Ekuale. Twice as many tackles as McBroom. The defense changed, but Ekuale is still doing his part. You're right.....ideally you have a quicker 285 DT to come in after the 325 pounder wears them down a bit.So what you are saying is Williams, Tupai and Ekuale take/took on double teams that allowed Bender, Long and Mata Afa to make plays? Great theory, but we all know that that never happened in practice. Bender, Long and Mata Afa we the ones getting double teamed, and in Mata Afa case against Utah, triple teamed at times in the second half. Williams, Tupai and Ekuale are/were strong in one area -- standing ground. They never get/got pushed back and maintained gap integrity thereby preventing disruption the LBs pursuit of the play. That is a good thing. Many a year, we had DLs that were getting utterly manhandled out there.
