Who are you going to root for?

Oregon favored by 6.5.

Our game 11/13 at Oregon is going to be a night game at 7:30pm on ESPN.

Will Game Day choose Eugene if the Ducks win on Saturday?

Are you going to break all rules and root for the Dawgs, to help the COUGS in a position to win the North?

Or...root for the Ducks and hope for a Boat Race and a Game Day in Eugene with an over confident Oregon the week of Washington State?

Is this a tough decision?

If I were betting this one, I'd still take the Ducks at an 18 point spread. UW is likely to get crushed. This will be the game where we get a true read on the relative strengths of both coaching staffs (neither of which, for the record, I find to be great). I suspect that the Duck staff is enough better than the Husky staff, combined with significantly better athletes this year, that this will be a blowout.

I won't say that I'm rooting for the Ducks - ever - but I want them to win in a blowout. I want them to be highly ranked, overconfident, and complacent when we roll in. I do not want UW to wake them up with a close game.

Plus, a Duck win over UW followed by a Coug win over the Ducks puts us firmly in control of our own destiny, with the inside track to the north title.

Agree with 95coug. A duck win over udump and then the Cougs take out Oregon. I was in Autzen the year the Cougs destroyed the ducks 55-16. It was glorious, as they had just been on the cover of SI, ‘Rich, Cool & Undefeated’. That was one of my favorite Coug games EVER !!! No duck fan saw that coming that day! It was 9/27/03 ! The Ducks had 7 first half turnovers and Autzen emptied out by halftime! Good Times!!

Oh boy, that was a great game all right. My son made the last minute decision to join a friend who was headed to Eugene....best decision of his life. I remember Mr. Sour Grapes himself, Mike Bellotti, not giving the Cougs any credit (as usual) saying the Ducks beat themselves and it's too bad WSU didn't get a normal game from the Ducks. Matt Kegel had perhaps his best day as a Coug in that one.

Glad Cougar

If it were the North Korean All Stars, Kim Jon Un would single-handedly beat the uw. He would not allow a score, or even a yard all game. Plus, he would score every time he touched the ball.
The announcers would be saying "uw just scored a touchdown and the extra point, but the scoreboard stills says 0.?" Oh wait, the ref is about to tell them to put 7 points on the board. Was that a poison dart in his neck?"

I was there, too, and have referenced the Autzen game many times on this board as one of my all time favorite.

Cover of S-I Jinx.

The cover of Sport Illustrated and they came out over confident and flat. We came down, and emptied out their stadium. It was absolutely the best! Hanging 55 points at Autzen. It was surreal.

The ducks are only favored by 6.5?? That seems light considering how bad UW has looked. I haven’t watched much of Oregon either maybe they are not that impressive. If betters think they are only a TD better than then we can absolutely beat Oregon.

That quote from Lake is absurd on so many levels. A man who went to Eastern and cannot even form a complete sentence is throwing out academic smack talk. What are "more academically prowess schools," anyway? If he had referred to schools that meet a certain academic standard, schools with greater academic prowess, or anything else grammatically correct, I would not feel as sorry for the clown. He also omitted Michigan, oddly enough.

Also consider anyone who can play football can get admitted to any of those schools sans Stanford. When it comes to football and academics combined there’s nothing special about UW. I guess that’s the argument you try and make when you suck and you’ve run out of other excuses.

Rooting for Ducks simply because the Cougs bring it harder against them than the Mutt matchups in the last 10 years. Also, the momentum going into the Apple Cup after beating the Ducks would be great for team morale and fan support. Would seriously mend a lot of fences and turn the program culture around.

I was there. What a game. Their fans were complete dickheads before and during the game. Particularly the students and recent grads. Then the all shut the f@ck up.

After we pounded them my buddy and I hitched a ride up to Corvallis and snuck into the Beavs/ASU game. Then hitched another ride back to Vancouver it ended. What a great day!

In situations like this, I always root for the Defense.

In fairness, neither did any Coug fan. IIRR we led 38-2 at one point (or even halftime) and i remeber thinking " we can't possibly blow a 36 point lead, can we?" Long-term trauma revealed there. Nice upper 80 degree day it was.

The first half of this past ASU game reminded me of that duck game in alot of ways. We got all the breaks. I will also be rooting for oregon this week. That's all I have to say about that.

The academic card is always pulled out by Dawg fans that went to Western, Eastern, Central, SPU, UPS, PLU, but rarely pulled out a UW grad. When some Dawg fans pulls out the academic line, I usually ask if they went to Western or Central, as 50% of the time they went to one of those two schools.

Michigan isn't as prowessy as the others.

Great response from the Oregon president....
"UW is a wonderful school with a great football history," he said. "I have great respect and affection for its president, its academic and football program and its former exceptional football coach, coach [Chris] Petersen. I look forward to our team meeting theirs on the gridiron this Saturday."

Yes, 79, that statement said a lot by omission. Respect generally has to be earned.

Even when it’s pulled by a UW grad it’s usually one who’s an underling at a company run by a Coug.

Those who have success in life don’t have to brag about the academic merits of their alma mater…their track record does the talking.

UW record vs teams with "academic prowess" since 1960:
  • Notre Dame: 0.000 (0-8)
  • USC: 0.372 (30-52)
  • Stanford: 0.500 (44-44-4)
So, overall win record vs schools UW believes are in its class: 0.288 (30-74).

Who's gonna tell 'em that they're not in the same tier academically OR athletically?

Here's the deal.

For the mainstream, I believe the UW requires approx. a 3.8 GPA to get admitted, unless you're a student athlete. GPA is much lower for a UW student athlete. I think the exception is Stanford, which has a much higher GPA requirement for its student athletes.

So Lake has made a wrong and inaccurate statement.

A little more complex than that (e.g., Cal implemented an aggregate GPA requirement for the incoming class a few years ago after a long period of just admitting athletes with special admissions policies and being bound only by min standards like UW and everyone else other than Stanford), but it's pretty much correct. Lake made a poor attempt to talk smack and couldn't pull it off.
