ED - since you "know" who Leach has hired at DC, when is the annoucement?

Here's been my logic…
Moos said that a decision would be made shortly. IMHO, that meant we'd be hearing something soon. Hence, I doubt they'd be bowl bound.

But we've been waiting and waiting… So is he on a team that's in a bowl? If so, why did Moos say a decision would be made soon?!

This really shows the "autonomy" that Moos appears to give CML. Moos just doing the business thing, knowing that these kinds of decisions need to be made quickly so to say that, in a generic sense, is a safe bet even though he hadn't really talked to CML about this specifically or any given timeline.

OR the decision has been made, agreements have been made, the DC is in a bowl and all is being hush-hush until after the game...

OK, I'll play. First, who is Ed? Second, what does he know or hint at? And, third when did he start knowing this?

I don't think CougEd ever said he knew who the defensive coordinator is or that a hire has already happend. Also, for what it's worth, I heard from a pretty reliable source last week that a hire could come pretty quick, though that was about a week ago, so there could have been a snag in who they were looking at initially.

With the recruiting dead period starting early next week, I can see this search dragging out until close to or after Christmas. It's a big hire and one that Mike Leach can't afford to get wrong. It isn't hurting recruiting and the only prospect that a defensive coordinator hire really hinges on is Austin Joyner, so it's not too big of a deal at this juncture.

Hello Lefty, good to see some new blood on the 'ol site.

Who is Ed - that is a wide open question, with a cornucopia of potential answers. Ed, or CougEd or fondly known as CougEdiot, is a long time poster. Key points:

Ed is a really nice guy, whom I have enjoyed many drinks with over the years. Not so much lately, since I dropped my season tickets.Ed is a long-suffering but supportive Coug alum and fanEd has a brother (also a nice guy but with a temper) named spongebobEd has a bad habit of referring to the distant past and trying to make comparisons to modern day footballEd posts many, many times a day, often in "War and Peace" length

OR the other option, as Britt points out.

First choice has a snag attached to the hire, so now we are either negotiating or looking for Plan B.

I'm pretty sure all Moos has said is, in response to a direct question on the topic, "I would expect we may have someone in place sooner than later."

Key word here is "may," and also note the general "sooner rather than later" expression of timing.

Moos sometimes overstates things a bit on the recruiting side, in particular, but usually, he does a pretty good job of giving savvy responses that don't make definitive commitments.

Some people are making it sound like he went out of his way to represent that a hire was imminent at the time, and that's not the case. He was on his radio show, asked when a hire would come, and gave the typical media-savvy answer we should expect him to. It may have meant he thought something was fairly close at the time, but it may not have. Maybe it was a way to message to particular candidates that if they didn't show sufficient interest, WSU was looking to move pretty quickly and would just move on to the next guy. Bear in mind all the potential audiences he has for everything he says.

Re: I bet you are sitting on pins and needles...

I think the longer it takes to name a DC and a DB coach, kids like Joyner might commit to UW and stick with it.

I really think that kids needs to be at WSU.

Me too, unfortunately. But I agree with the idea that it's best to get this hire right then to make a quick hire.

You might be right, but this isn't college basketball where one recruit can make or break a program. I promise you that Joyner's recruitment is the last thing on their mind when making this decision. A defensive coordinator hire is 1,000 times more important than a running back recruit who wants to try out cornerback at the next level, to be completely honest.

Also, I don't expect Joyner to make a decision until after his visits are finished, which will be following his official visit to Washington State on January 23.

Possible name change to TolstoyCoug. Les Misérables was 1488 pages.

Leach was in Cancun the week after Apple Cup so obviously he's not in a big hurry to hire his DC. More candidates after bowl season anyways

Re: I bet you are sitting on pins and needles...

That's better than needling him.

Just a schmuck with a with a laptop, an opinion, and a love for the Cougs..

pretty simple ...

T-Town--if the first name that was given to me was going to be

the new DC, then he would have been hired already. Clearly the list has changed.

I sure hope it's Pendergast. But the fact that the announcement hasn't come yet doesn't bode well for that possibility.

It's been a pretty tight-lipped search, but Clancy Pendergast has not been a name I've heard. Though, that certainly doesn't mean he could be the guy. I just don't see Washington State being able to afford him or be that attractive to him.

What's Wazzu looking to pay? $500-$700K?

I can't imagine them going over $600,000.

I think this is one of those situations where if you need to pay $800k to get a big name, do it. Don't balk at the idea because they want a little more money. I'm not saying shell out $800k just because. If someone like David Gibbs was really interested and asked for $800k - should they tell him to take a walk if he won't accept $600k?

I agree. We need to also remember that Eric Russell also made a good amount and we can perhaps go with a lower salary guy at the special teams slot to make up the difference.

Can't help noticing that Moos said we'd be hiring a DC and a "secondary coach". I'm thinking that actually means a DB coach...so either there isn't going to be a special teams coach, or it's not an immediate priority.

Or, Eric Mele will be the special teams coach. I don't know the answer.
