Fire Ernie Kent

I am the one who said it looked like they were on the edge. However they played with energy the second half. Team has been on the road for 16 of the last 25 days, and finished playing back to back games at altitude. Not an excuse for the terrible half court offense the first half, but might explain a little of what appeared to be lack of focus and effort

Energy in the second half is what you saw? I saw a bunch of guys playing rat ball at the ymca. The energy came from wanting to get the ball so you could go to the other end a shoot it. Did Elleby pass the ball once in the second half? He got hot so his numbers went up but he was playing 100 percent for Elleby not WSU. This game was a complete joke. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m to the point where I’m done, I just don’t care to even watch this crap anymore. The last time I felt like this was during Graham’s tenure and I didn’t really comeback till Half way through Dick Bennett’s second year. Fire him and fire him right now! Stop the bleeding!

Pretty sure all of Ellebys second half points were scored for WSU. You could accuse anyone who gets a hot hand of playing for himself. The guy was going to the boards, and going for loose balls. I never saw him pass up an open man for a lesser shot. First half he clearly forced up some bad shots, but the whole team was shooting bricks. The guy scored 20 points on 8 field goal attempts. I will take that kind of selfish play any time

You will take it and you will like it and WSU will continue to get boat raced out of the gym because of it. Basketball is not a one on one game and yes he did shoot many shots rather than pass to open players who had better shots. It’s not his fault it’s the system he is in that is the problem. He is completely done playing for Kent and WSU it’s all about him and raising his stock to transfer. Look at his body language... hands on the hips durring a break away dunk, announcers commenting on how the Cougars just stopped and watched as if the play was over.
Let me guess.. we’re longer and more athletic and really have some good players in place and our recruiting is picking up blah blah blah. You take Franks out of this lineup and this is the most pathetic roster I’ve seen in the PAC10/12 history. Couple that with a coach who has never, never ever consistently won anywhere he’s been and look what you get. Our biggest chance for a conference win is the next game and we will get crushed without Robo and seriously don’t know if can win with him.

I guess we just see it different. I saw the hsnds on the hips too, but you claimed he let the guy go by and tried coat check it away. I saw a bad pass that the defender broke on at full speed. That was about the 3rd turnover of that type I saw us make

I counted 12 layups missed in the first half, fundemental basketball 101. Just the basics of the game of basketball these players can't make that frustrate me the most. There were some layups in the CU game also, but I was not counting those as I was not in tune with the misses until later on. I am hoping for a positive week at home.

I did not see the game. However i can see the reason for the hysteria. I have criticized Kent for playing Skaggs and Daniels. Skaggs in particular only role is to chuck up a three pointer the moment the ball touches his hands .While that may be ok if he has a hot hand it is not conducive to team basketball. The team never develops a rhythm to it s game . His limitations as a basketball player are well known. A team s players all need to feel involved and one or two players chucking up shots at will keeps that from happening. The coug point guard s have not taken over control of the team like i hoped they would. That is partly on Kent in his minutes awarded. A team cannot have a leader like Daniels who has marginal skills and is too small to play his position on defense. Bring an optimist i am hoping that the concept of team begins anew against Cal this week a win would solve some problems. Kent will be back next year if only for budgetary reasons

"I can see the reason for the hysteria".

Well, it's a start.

Kent will be back next year guaranteed because he and Bill Moos colluded to turn middle fingers to the sky as the Wizard of Oz headed to Lincoln.

My goodness, if you think the problems of this program rest on the shoulders of two players, you really don't know much about basketball. I'm constantly amazed at the double standard you have used with Kent vs. Bone. A lot of us wanted Bone to be replaced, but had I known Ernie Kent would be his replacement, I would've supported Bone's retention. WSU would've won more games and save a lot of money. A win over Cal is not going to make all the systemic problems in the program go away. I would not be surprised if the Cougars win a handful of games in a real bad Pac-12 this year, but I would also not be surprised if they don't win more than 1-2 games. What isn't in question in my mind is that this program is going nowhere under Ernie Kent no matter how many years he's on the job. Now well into his 5th year, he's actually done the remarkable– he's made this program worse and more irrelevant than it was when he arrived.

Glad Cougar

Carter Skaggs played 15 mins and took 3 shots, 2 from 3 point land making 1. Yea he’s the problem!

If it were up to me I'd fire him right now. That would give a new chance to build a relationship with the players before they all transfer. There is some talent there, Elleby, Cannon, Kunc, …. Whatever the buyout is it's a drop in the bucket compared to the $63 or $80 million or whatever it is we're in the hole.

Great point, and good idea.

Yeah, and how many points did he give up in those 15 minutes. If he is not scoring during his minutes he is costing the team a LOT of points because of his defense.

That seems to be the common wisdom on this board but it simply isn’t true, watch a game and tell me how many time Skaggs guy drives around him vs Elleby or even better Franks. Granted when playing man they usually guard tougher players but this idea Skaggs gets blew by consistently is a myth. I do agree if he isn’t hitting his shots his time should be limited but he is so far from being the reason we suck it isn’t even funny. Plus even if somebody thinks he is loosing games for us (which borders on stupidity) Kent recruited him Kent plays him.

There is a lot of talk about Skaggs and Daniels not being able to create their own shot. While it would be great if they could, the fact we rely on players ability to make their own shot is the problem! It’s not their job to get shots for themselves it’s coaches job to get the players shots with his offense.

Only guy right now who can create his own shot is Elleby, and he is apparently ball hogging and playing for himself according to one poster.

Yeah, and how many points did he give up in those 15 minutes. If he is not scoring during his minutes he is costing the team a LOT of points because of his defense.

A good coach would adjust his scheme to his personnel. Or not bring personnel in that doesn't fit the scheme in the first place.

With his quickness, honestly, I don't what I'd do with Skaggs. If it was high school, I'd hide him in the bottom of a 1-2-2 zone and teach him how to defend in the post with lots of help. At the college level, that's not going to work.

OK I rewatched the game on dvr and took specific stats to see if I could prove or put some of these issues to rest.
First off I have to admit Elleby second half wasn’t as bad as I thought as far as ball hogging. In the first half Elleby touched the ball on the offensive end of the court 12 times and passed the ball 4 times one of which was a turnover. In the second half he touched the ball 24 times and passed the ball 8 times one pass resulting in a turnover and 2 nice assists. Not terrible considering it is his job to score. So basically he took shots 2 out of every 3 touches, again not bad considering his role. So I was wrong on that one
In comparison in the first half Skaggs touched the ball 13 times and passed the ball 11 times taking only 2 shots making 1 and no turnovers from his passes. In the second half he touched the ball 2 times and passed the ball 1 time taking only 1 shot. So obviously Skaggs is not just chucking up 3s every time he touches the ball.
Also I tracked players who got taken off the dribble that resulted in anything positive for Utah or had 3 pointer shot over them due to slow close outs.
Blow by. Slow close out
Elleby. 2. 2
Daniels. 2. 3
Kunc. 4. 0
Skaggs. 0. 1

Skaggs could have had one more but it wasn’t his responsibility even though he was the one trying to get out to the shooter.

Also tracked score when Skaggs went in and when he went out. In the 15 minutes Skaggs played we were out scored by 9 points. We lost the game by 18 points so take that as you will. It should be noted also that a bunch of Skaggs minutes came in the first half with Elleby on the bench with foul trouble.

i guess people want a huge donor to step in and contribute 30-40 million to buyout Kent and start the quest for a new home for basketball?

Jourdand: going back and watching the second half the way you did took more effort that I would have done. I think your revised analysis is good. Elleby was coming off a horrible game against Col, and the firsthalf against Utah was even worse. I saw frustration, and freshman mistakes.

There is nothing wrong with Ernies idea of using pressure D to create offense. The problem is you still half to have an effective half court offense against anyone but terribly over matched opponents. Raveling made the same mistake in his early years, stating that he expected to get 75% of his points off the fast break. George was a 34 year old first year coach, Ernie should know better. We are the easiest team to defend in the half court right now.

The cougs need to do some belt tightening and hiring a new guy would mean two very lean years. That would mean more financial losses. You guys think that the players do not support Kent and the coaching staff. This does not appear to be the case. So unless one of ou guys can pony up 5- 10 million it is just not going to happen

The players support Ernie because, honestly, what choice do they have? It's not like other schools were beating down their door with offers. They are probably very happy to be playing at a P5 school and getting a free education.

Ernie's treatment of players has never been an issue. He's a good role model. Nice guy. Probably very encouraging. He's just a horrible developer of talent and his lack of system is compounded with horrific in-game coaching.

Nice spin after some of your earlier posts. i like the young players and new recruits.

So do their parents.

They should get geared up for transferring or playing for another coach in two years.

Ernie ain't getting extended. Just accept it. Chun will bring in his own guy.
