The Carlin quote is always a crowd pleaser. I'm assuming that it was aimed at the doubters who thought his offense was a gimmick. In the specific case of the LSU game, I'd go farther and suggest that a perfect storm hit Pelini. New players; CB's who were not used to running the whole game and were dragging at the end; a D scheme that learned absolutely nothing from the past 5 years of Leach's pro's & con's (in fact, it looked as though Bo Buddy didn't bother to do any research at all); and a level of arrogance that I frankly found surprising. Arrogance of that level approaches stupidity. If he carries that arrogance into the next game with Leach, it will be confirmed as being stupidity.
A lot of people have commented that he rushed 4 when he should have rushed 3. I'll buy that, but it was even worse than that. He had his two run stuffers in at D tackle. Surely a program as able to recruit as LSU has a few DT's...or at least guys who could play DT...who are closer to a pass rush specialist than a run stopper? It was bad enough that he had a 4 man front. Even worse, they probably were not even the best 4 to have on the field to play the Air Raid. The unit that takes the longest to learn chemistry is usually the O line, and they are in a new system. Either that MSU line is full of geniuses, or LSU was so over confident, they thought they could simply play a 4 man front straight up...no trickery...minimal blitzing...nobody who lines up on the line but drops into coverage... nothing...just a straight up 4 man rush. And the magic of the LSU home field and the awe and fear that every team is supposed to feel upon entering the stadium would simply take care of things.
Good luck with that. The emperor in Baton Rouge has no clothes. The SEC may have some teams with clothes, but the LSU D staff is not a part of that group. In the immortal words of Forrest Gump:
"Stupid is as stupid does".
