They seem like the most logical fit. Good, trending football team. Las Vegas market w/ sponsorships and media opportunites.

Curious what the price is to make them say "yes..."

UNLV already signed with MWC, is staying with MWC, is getting 25 mil from MWC. PAC 8 isn't going to pay 33 mil + poaching fee of 10 mil + 18 mil exit fee for about 67 mil to get UNLV.

My math for UNLV is a little bit different than Mikalalas', but still pretty high...

1 - UNLV gives up the $25M the MWC just gave them for staying
2 - UNLV pays $17M exit fee

So, leaving the MWC for the PAC-12 is a $25M + $17M = $42M swing for UNLV.

The poaching fee would have been paid by the PAC-12, if it survives the lawsuit. See link below on the lawsuit:

I still can't believe the MW is giving them $25M.

I wish we could have made the "metrics" to get into the PAC. But, that's now in the past and time to move forward. That money is going to help us a lot and the timing couldn't be better. Here is where we need to spend it.

1. Double our football coach's salary. Do everything we can to keep him.
2. Get rid of our mediocre men's basketball coach and invest to rebuild that program.
3. Lock down our women's basketball coach. She is pure gold. We need her now that women's basketball will become an NCAA Tourney revenue sport.

Well done on being classy. Looking forward to having UNLV visit Corvallis in 2.5 weeks.

Oregon State is also looking for that Jerry Tarkanian basketball coach.

When you have momentum you have to capitalize.

That's actually why it made sense for UNLV to turn us down. They have short-term momentum, and need to feed it. Jumping conferences would cost them the exit fee so they’d be resource poor. Even with a new media deal at $12M, they’d be short of cash for 18 months before they got back to zero. In today’s CFP world, it doesn’t take 18 months for momentum to turn into free fall.

Staying put, they keep the exit fee money and at least stay even financially. But with the $25M payment from the MWC, they get the short-term boost that lets them feed their momentum. It’s not a huge windfall and it does nothing for the long term, but it’s the best and lowest risk move for the next 2-3 years…and buys them some time to figure out what to do next. I’m thinking it probably wasn’t a really tough decision.

Where things could get complicated is if the PAC wins their suit and gets the poaching fees eliminated. We could then match the $25M offer, which turns the advantage in favor of jumping. Question then is…does the PAC think UNLV is worth $25M?

Right now, the PAC doesn’t have good options, and they don’t know how much money is available. But they’ve also got a bit more time to make the 8th invitation. There’s no need to do it next week.

If it’s going to be an FCS team, we can probably wait a year…but we’re probably trying to avoid that. If we go that route, Sac state is probably near the top of of the heap. That doesn’t make them attractive, it’s just means they’re the shiniest turd.

FBS options are pretty limited now, but that could change if we get $50M back. Right now it’s what, Hawaii, UTEP, and New Mexico State? No need to hurry into one of those.

Wait. There’s no need to make a bad decision just for the sake of making a decision. There are variables in play that could change the landscape, so give them time to iron out.

PAC just got Gonzaga, which would make the PAC even more attractive to media deal partners, and even more media deal money, and would make PAC more attractive to UNLV, Memphis, if offer them 25 mil.

If the Pac-12 gets $15M in annual media rights, on a 5 year deal UNLV gets $60M.

The MW media deal is likely in the $10M range for 5 years.

If the above math is accurate, the $25M retention bonus is far less than the total value of the media deal.

It's going to be interesting to see what the two media deals look like. I don't blame UNLV for playing the short game...but it feels like they are setting themselves up for long term mediocrity. They may be betting that the Big 12 comes calling in the near future and just hoping for that.

$15M seems optimistic. Most of the numbers I've seen are closer to $12M...but nobody knows for sure.

At $12M, and paying an $18M exit fee, UNLV is in the red for 18 months. Factor in the retention payment from the MWC, and then UNLV is in the red for 43 months. Hard to accept that.

It was quoted that the Zags media hoops value is in the $15M range. If true, the conference is pretty optimistic that they will get at least that number for football and the Zags obviously are believing what they are hearing.

Explain how we are going to cover the $75M in exit fees Rice, North Texas and Tulsa are going to have to come up with.

Edit - and Sacramento state has 2 openings in their 2025 schedule.

This. And with Gonzaga, the value of our hoops media is improved.
