on the radio. Rationalizing Thibadoux's targeting, hand wringing every decision, excuse excuse excuse.

I don't think anyone likes the ejection rule, but dude lowered his chin and left his feet - its going to get called every time, even if it is incidental.

While I don't doubt that the stripes ultimately helped Furd down the field on that drive, there is not doubt that Oregon shat the bed in every way possible. No doubt they have talent, but they play like they're waiting for Thibadoux or CJ Verdell to always make the hero play and save them.

Anyway, living in Metro Portland after a Duck loss is always entertaining. Oh, and we're back to the Belotti days of "we beat ourselves", never giving the other team any credit for beating them.

Good stuff. I'll never forget that 2006 game, where the Cougs came out and just beat the crap out of a ranked Oregon team on a glorious day in Pullman--up 27-3 at one point, and ultimately won 34-23--and Bellotti reacted exactly in the way you have characterized it.

Recognizing one's own shortcomings is a critical component of self-improvement. Enjoy the Quackers delusional meanderings for what it is: promulgation of continued mediocrity.

It's a time honored tradition for Ducks to minimize what the other team did. Rich Brooks said after Reuben Mayes rushed for 357 yards– at the time, the NCAA single game rushing record– "Mayes is a good back, but we made him look like an All-American today." Mayes ended up being a consesnus All-American.

On the Thibadoux targeting, when I saw it live, I wondered why a flag wasn't thrown on the play right away. It was the replay booth that initiated a review and ultimate determination....probably because the Stanford QB was lying on the ground motionless. Left up to the officials on the field, it would never have been called and it would be Stanford fans griping.

I know it's good for the conference to have Oregon go undefeated, get into the NC playoff, etc.....but I just can't help but smile when I see someone upsetting the Ducks. I lived in the Portland area too long to not be impacted by the arrogance of the green & gold.

Glad Cougar

I remember that one. I was at that game. We came to play that day.

I sort of view it as re-establishing balance in the universe. In the south part of the PAC footprint it as always USC who behaved as though nothing was their fault. In the north, it was UW. As UW became more and more irrelevant to championship conversations, Oregon took their place in terms of anything that happened was somebody else's fault (recognizing a couple of Peterson years where they got their heads back up in the clouds). So there is still a strong level of that obliviousness at both ends of the geographic scale, currently represented by SC and UO. Let's be clear...UW still behaves as they always have. That has not changed. It's just that nobody outside their fan base has a reason to care anymore.

Not quite the same point but I took note of UW's lack of accountability or attributing the failings to the institution or program, even during the darkest times. E.g., even back then, I found it remarkable how UW fans always framed 0-12 as what Willingham did, not what UW did, and when the defenses were terrible under Holt and Sarkisian never got it done, it always was about Holt. Right now, 2/3 of UW's problems are attributed to the OC, and 1/3 to Lake. Nobody even suggests that there are larger institutional failings and that UW, while a pretty solid athletics program in an increasingly significant city and state, isn't going to be a powerhouse in the revenue sports all the time. I realize to some extent all fan bases think like this, including ours, but they take it to an extreme. Like fans of Tennessee and Nebraska, they just can't conceive of a situation where their football teams aren't top-10 programs consistently. My problem isn't with that expectation and working as fans to support it as it is with blaming all failings on particular coaches instead of looking at the institution and its position in the hierarchy more generally. UW certainly is capable of some good runs, but looking back, the history/legacy of its prior performances became less meaningful as things got more equitable, more teams played in bowls (so it wasn't just about USC and UW every year), and Oregon rose. Not entirely a coincidence that the NCAA limited scholies to 85 in 1992, and that is to UW what 1995 is to the Mariners.

I don't live in the NW anymore, but I imagine PDX-area is becoming like Seattle in the 90s and 2000s - a bunch of non-alum jack-Huskies dunking on actual Cougar alums/students. They've got the hoodies and the flat-billed caps and all the confidence in the world, but couldn't name anyone on the roster outside of the QB.

Crazy to think that was all built over ~10 years, ended in the early 90s, but took probably 25 years to calm down and for fans to reevaluate their understanding of Montlake's standing in the CFB universe. I mean, it went on for a generation. I expect that to be the case in PDX as well

I am copying and pasting this from Brand X, because its a good post:

"The UW is a nice regional program that has not won anything significant on a national stage in over 30 years, yet many fans and locals continue to spew comments of a forgone era of bought dominance! What is with the fascination with the “get back to dominance”? Keep wishing and wondering after each and every football season what happened? When was the last huskie signature win? Many cannot even remember!

I enjoy reading almost every year about a Huskie preseason top 25 tanking only to end up somewhere down the line like clockwork! And yet you enter our forum as a consolation prize to proclaim a historical winning record to any and all? How laughable! Say it with me,”Over Rated”

I believe there is no other team in the nation with a worse preseason ranking vs final ranking than the uW! Prove me wrong! ".

spot on, this area is infested with duck fans that have no connection to the university other than watching football, if they are winning. if they are losing these fans are nowhere to be found
