Stumbled on this article by Clay Travis of Outkick about the monumental changes in college football being driven by the NIL and transfer portal. Some very interesting analysis here.

Some interesting points:
  • Enrollment at Alabama has doubled since Saban has coached there.
  • Every year since 2007 Saban has had Alabama ranked at #1 at some time in the season!
  • What if Elon Musk wanted to have his favorite school do well? Fund a billion dollar foundation and pay top dollar for the best coaches. Pay every top recruit a million dollars a year. They would dominate.
  • Today a great athlete can do better than a pro. Three free agency opportunities-one as a recruit getting signed, two by using the transfer portal, and three by being a graduate transfer.
I think you will find the article intriguing......

I have read that the estimated financial impact of Saban at Alabama was $400,000,000 or more.

It is interesting to me how he spoke about A&M buying players…. When it was Alabama that bought him as their coach.

Saban sees the writing on the wall. You cannot compete for and win national titles with Alabama HS talent alone. You have to go into another state, another schools backyard and take their best players. Before, he could muscle those schools. Beat them on the field, beat them with facilities, etc. Now that $$$ is involved, he has to beat the local schools there too. What’s the problem???

The Texas schools will close the state line. UT, A&M, TT, Baylor, Houston, SMU, TCU, even Rice are not going to watch in state kids leave without a huge offer. That hurts Saban.

Florida State, Miami, UofFlorida are not going to watch their local talent leave without making a huge offer.

Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson, all the same. Even Kentucky and North Carolina, who have been paying basketball players (wink, nudge), are not going to watch their local talent leave without making a huge offer.

Where does that leave schools like Alabama? Can Alabama outbid oil money?

The SEC is coming West and going North. Anywhere they can get into someone’s backyard and outbid the local school.

Interesting. I'd never really viewed CFB as a communist system before, but that really makes some sense.

Curious what the author's long-term solution is. Following some of his logic, they're essentially turning the CFB financial model into the MLB's. MLB uses revenue sharing to try to level the field. What will prevent Texas from just buying titles every year?

Coaching ….if fisher loses three games this year he will be fired. They tried this with Jackie Sherrill who was a great coach in his time . It will be the greatest money suck ever . But those who have it will have fun spending it and never getting what they desire from it .

He needs more than 1 class. Even if the best recruiting class ever all start they are still all freshmen. If A&M can do that again this year, they will have a big time team real soon.

Under the traditional model, yes. But if Fisher can turn his annual recruiting class into a haul of proven players from the portal....

Ditto for Saban if he can do the same...but does Alabama have that money?

I'm not sure anyone has the money to compete with Texas oil. Especially not at $6/gallon.

That's why someone has to come up with a way to keep the schools from funneling NIL deals to players, especially before they sign/see the field. There's no way to control the market and what they offer, but the schools can't be part of it.

And, there's got to be something to make sure that it's not purely pay-for-play, the athlete has to do something for the money. That's not going to be a difficult bar to reach, all they need to do is put their picture on something.

Yes. He has a great class of frosh. Adding some transfers while they grow up puts him in the conversation.
