This is a tough one.

I went to A LOT of gu games in the 70s and 80s and was a big fan when they first started their tournie run until about 2010. I grew tired of their arrogance when they were overrated and once they cancelled with WSU they pretty much dropped down to neutral at best when it comes to the tournie.

UCLA has been the pride of the PAC in hoops for decades. But the fact they are ditching for the BiG makes rooting for them in the tournie feel dirty. I am however, a big fan of Jaime J and to a lesser degree Tyger C for sticking around for a full college career. The PAC could use the money if they make a run so there’s that to consider as well.

With that being said, I’m rooting for San Diego State.

I have a similar relationship with GU, went to most home games during mid 80s and loved their early tourney runs. Then they got to big for their britches and everybody became a GU lifetime fan. Even though in the 80’s most times I could walk in without paying and sit in the stands with 5 or 6 hundred people. Not UCLA fan but I like this UCLA team.

Gonzaga is annoying and difficult to root for.

I too liked them in the Monsoon days but now I find them annoying
F- Gonzaga. I hate them. Especially since they quit playing "bottom feeders" (WSU) and then aligned themselves with the uw in medicine instead of going with the WSU Colleges of medicine and nursing which are - in Spokane, about 2 miles from the gonzaga campus (aka catholic daycare).

I'll be honest, I am pulling for Gonzaga in this one.

While I don't like the Zags for a lot of the reasons mentioned, what UCLA (and USC) did to the conference is pretty tough to swallow. I won't be rooting for them in any scenario, personally.

Go back farther than that - mid 70's. Could literally walk in and sit in any seat in the house. Maybe they'd ask for a ticket, maybe they wouldn't.

Saw some great Big Sky stuff back then - Michael Ray Richardson and Jud were at Montana. Boise State was solid with Buzz Conner coaching. Idaho State was fresh off their upset of UCLA. Also saw Freeman McNeil of Portland State the year he led the nation in scoring.

A lot of times the upper bleachers weren't even rolled out on both sides. High school games ALWAYS drew more than Gonzaga games and it wasn't close. Stockton went from playing in front of 5 to 6,000 people to, maybe 1500 on a good night.

We went to the same games.
Do you remember the referee going down against Portland State (packed house for the nations leading scorer if memory serves)? After he collapsed he eventually got up, shook it off and continued officiating - until he went down again. That one he never got up from.

I can't remember what I had for breakfast. But, yeah, I seem to recall a ref getting carted off.

Freeman Williams at Portland State. He died last year at age 65. Incredible shooter. Had there been a 3-point shot back then, he might have set some career NCAA records. Played in front of maybe 500 fans at the PSU gym if he was lucky.

Glad Cougar
