~$6MM payout.
Gotta keep going to the B tier bowls if we can't get a playoff spot. It's really the only thing keeping the program afloat at this point.

We went to the Holiday Bowl in both 2017 and 2018. Both times....our team played like ass. Given the way that this season finished....I'll be watching this one on TV. My wife really wants to go, but I told her that I would be one worthless angry sumbitch if we spent $3k to go watch us get our asses kicked while half-assing our way through another game.

My wife said that she saw that rumors on the interwebs say that Syracuse's QB is going to skip the game, so there's that.

Wasn't 2018 the Alamo Bowl with Gardner Minshew?

EDIT: I was correct on that, just looked it up. Our back to back Holiday Bowls were 2016 and 2017. Discovered an interesting thing about WSU's bowl game history- the only game we have ever won by more than one score was the original Rose Bowl in 1916, beating the Brown Bears 14-0. Yes, we did beat Texas by 8 points in the Holiday Bowl (Classic game!), but that still is within one score with the 2 point conversion.

And BTW, our Alamo Bowl win is the only win in the last 6 bowl games. Time to get back on the right side of the ledger!

Doh!

We went to all three games and I got my dates jacked up. You are correct. Both Holiday Bowl games sucked but at least we had a shot to win the 2016 edition against the rapists from Minnesota.

That 2016 trip was the trip from Hell. Landed at LAX about 10:30 or 11:00, finally got out of the rental car warehouse about 3:30 a.m.. got to bed about 5:30 at the resort, and got maybe 3 hours sleep before having to get up and get going to visit others and then hit the the pregame function. Ugh!

Other than 2018 Alamo I can’t remember a decent bowl game for the Cougs. Even that Sun Bowl we won against Miami was ugly AF.

Syracuse puts out second rate broadcasters.

Sincerely,

THE Edward R Murrow College of Communication
And honestly, I was never fond of Chaz's voice and play by play. I know there's a few here that liked his play by play and overall broadcast talent...to each his own. Notice how he bolted?

They do have a good Com department, though.

I wish I could joke about this, but the Murrow College of Communication has been dogsh*t since about 2013 and beyond. Even before then there were major cracks. I wouldn't recommend any student considering WSU and other university options for that pathway to choose WSU now.

Pintak ran anyone talented out of the building because his damn ego was so large.

Don't blame you, that's $3k+ you could spend on something enjoyable...or even a SD vacation without having to watch WSU pretend to bowl game.

It's one thing when we get our asses kicked legitimately, but to spend $2500 and find out that 8-10 starters have opted out, including the starting QB, feels like you're being robbed.

Yeah you’re basically spending $2500 to go to the crimson and gray game at that point.

I wish there was a way to make it sound bowl games needed to be played for eligibility the following season and/or bonuses for winning
I’d imagine with NIL there’s going to be some incentives or escalators built in going forward if there isn’t already. The NCAA opened up this can of worms and they aren’t going to be ok with bowl attendance and ratings dropping more because the high profile players are sitting out. Its not easy to reel it back in but they will have to work with the conferences and schools to try something to get these kids to play.

Bowl games are the one instance where I'm a fan of NIL and Swag. The players should be incentivized. Maybe you do something like drop the traveling bowl roster down to 60 guys and allocate a big chunk of cash and legit Swag to them.

Good luck with that plan. NIL has gone wild and the NCAA can and will do nothing to 'reel it in" IMHO. The big schools and conferences only care about the playoff, and I predict very few player departures from those 12 teams. Bowl games? Those become the problems of the Bowls themselves.

You make a good chunk of the NIL contract due and payable AFTER the season is over - including the bowl games.

50% upon execution of contract, maybe 10% during the season and the remaining 40% payable upon specified milestones based on participation.

If these guys are all that, they can pay for their own insurance against catastrophic injury. Those policies have been around for years.

I'm being lazy today - how much does WSU get out of the $6M Holiday Bowl payout? Is it split pro rata with league members (aka OSU)? I thought I remembered the Rose Bowl participant got 2 shares and the rest of the conference got one. Don't remember on the smaller bowls.

I was never a big fan of making Murrow its own College. Back in my day, the Comm School (at the time) was where Business majors went after they couldn't make it past Acctg 230 and 231. One notch above General Studies. :)

Will never forget Val Limburg and Comm 101 (with his book) in Bryan Aud. with 1,000 classmates. What an utter waste of a class. I hardly ever went and got a C out of probably the easiest A on campus. I didn't know Rosebud was a sled.

I'd assume they pay for all the expenses (including player gift bags, etc.) and the rest goes into the "pot."

What will be interesting is will teams give "bowl bonuses" to player who actually play in the games. And will the cost of the bowl bonus come out of the pot? I'd personally pay like 10K per player. That would add up to 1M, but would be worth it.

ttown you come up with some of the oddest shit.

Who is "they"? WSU or the Pac?

And no the school can't pay "bonuses" to the players. Schools can now work directly with NIL groups, but WSU can't pay "bonuses". Not yet anyway.

2003 Holiday Bowl vs Texas was one the best Cougar performances I have ever witnessed.
That was indeed a great game. Sadly, my wife and I had to cancel our trip to San Diego for that game due to her father passing away on Christmas Day. Sometimes life happens, ya know?

I have really enjoyed watching the 2 hour replay of that game with all the player interviews on the PAC 12 Network over the years. But no more. Thanks a lot to all you damn traitors!

Kyle Basler, defensive MVP!!!

Totally agree!

The year was 1978. Com 101 with Val. I still have the red textbook, Mass Communications and kept it all these years.

The class, was pretty horrible. Sitting up on the balcony in Bryan Auditorium with 800 other students, as a freshman, with zero reading and comprehensive skills from High School.

It was brutal. However, Val immediately became my advisor, and a legend at that. He sent me to KIRO for my internship. Always grateful for Val. Had my choice of any station I wanted, including KJR. Even gave me a gig that I eventually turned down with Jerry Isenhart at KOZI AM/FM in Radio Lake Chelan.

Val was an absolute legend in the Com department, but that Com 101 class of Mass Communications was a joke, totally agree. I too, think I got a "C".

Yeah, if I could magically create the criteria for NIL it would be contingent on playing the entire season. If you opt out of the bowl for any reason other than legitimate injury diagnosed by the team doctor, you forfeit payment for the entire season.

It changed over to the college when I was there. Completely f*cked everything, including a lot of talented staff who decided to leave.

In one of my comm classes we were asked to do some general math, and it was pretty hilarious at the amount of "uhh..? errr...? hmm..." collectively was said together, while someone jokingly asked the professor, "you know you just asked a bunch of communication majors to do math, right?"

Todd Aud for Comm 101 was probably a high volume of CougZone (pre WazzuWatch) time for me, ha.

The conference is "they"....

Different topic on revenue sharing. Revenue sharing starts soon. And yes, i am curious if this will translate to paying players to play in a bowl game. I'd do it.

Interesting read on the Holiday Bowl payout. $5.87M TOTAL for WSU (Pac-2) and Syracuse? I thought it was that much for each team/conference. So figure maybe $4M after paying team expenses, thus $2M left for WSU to split with the Beavers? You are welcome OSU. The mutts? F-em.
