So this works in all ways. We are stuck with CEK this year. So we go to Ben Johnson at Portland, and say look, we will hire you on a 5 year contract. Years 1 though 2 or 3, it will be a huge raise over your asst. salary at Portland, but not Pac-12 HC level. The last 2-3 years, after we have unloaded our CEK buyout, you will get market rate. With all your contacts and former players, etc. go get us some Aussies and Europeans and some Americans and let's rebuild this thing again.

How could that possibly be as bad or worse than the train wreck we have right now?

Repeat of post elsewhere:
The biggest mistake we made was in not hiring Ben Johnson as HC when Tony left. He wanted to stay, and did stay for awhile under Bone. He was our Australian pipeline. There he is - at Portland. Let's go get him. Aron Baynes would approve.

I know there were posters that liked Ron Sanchez a lot and he just took over this year at Charlotte (1-1 w/ a win over OK State). I didn't see Johnson taking over after Tony left and there's a decade of distance between Tony now. I think Johnson's the #2 assistant at UP and they haven't exactly been tearing it up (don't know if that's expected to change though). I do think increasing our recruiting presence overseas would be a good thing.

I liked Chun's hire of Ethridge on the women's side. I would expect a connection of some kind to get someone here. Kent hasn't done a great job but we know it's going to take patience. I just hope if there is a change we can hold on to Elleby and Kunc who could really help in the years to come.

Not so sure about Ben Johnson myself. Also not so sure about the Portland Pilots. They aren't doing all that well in my opinion. Have what looks to be a good staff, have recruited pretty well, but certainly aren't playing any defense at all.

Looses to Hawaii and North Texas in a hawaiian tournament. Giving up 103 to Multnomah.

You mean when, not if. And I like Ethridge's hire too. I guess Chun has done 1 good thing so far. We hope. Not sure about your "connection" comment. Chun had no connection to Ehtridge. Prez Schulz sort of did.

Talk about pathetic efforts.

Feel free to unveil your own superior plan. Unless signing marginal JC players in Year 5 is your type of strategy.

Johnson is not the head coach at Portland. Hey my whole premise addresses the money issue, looks at a guy who was raised under Bennett ball and was a trooper when he was at WSU - and recruited some good players like NBA denizen Baynes. Don't forget Motum either.

You're right he is not, but Terry Porter is who has more connections to Dick Bennett than nearly anyone. But yet they don't play defense nor are they doing much. Recruiting classes but not performance.

Ah, the best laid plans of Loyal and men... :)

Here is what gets in the way of any ideas. Remote location for recruiting. No charter flights. Terrible tradition ( 5 NCAA appearances in 40 years ). Every coach who took us to the dance left after last appearance. Statistically about 1 chance in 3 of finding a coach who can win

Add in 6 of the other 11 members of the league according to Jon Wilner were mentioned in the recent Adidas hoops bribery trial.

Spending money to do something in basketball (and not improve anything except our feelings for a year or two), when the money needs to be spent on the football team (raises and facilities) doesn't strike me as a good idea.
