Well....the rumors of the demise of Connor Halliday's NFL potential have been greatly exaggerated.

I would have been shocked if he was taken higher than the 5th round. Given the need for QB's and the lack of depth in this class, that's right about where I had him pegged. Seems like scouts and GM's think even more highly of him than most of us who generally favored him do.

It's not impossible.

But anyone who says they "would not be surprised" if he was in the first 4-5 is flat out lying / writing clickbait.

If I'm a scout, I look at the fact that he's a beanpole and is not durable. I look at the fact that he's a system QB. I look at the fact that he's rehabbing a big injury and will not have played in a competitive game in a calendar year when the 2015 season rolls around. I look at the fact that his meteoric senior year was preceded by a string of disaster seasons where he may have set records for turnovers.

Wish him the best, but EVERYONE will be surprised if he's a top pick at QB.

As the smoke from the draft clears, is La Canfora "surprised" that 7 QBs were drafted and Connor was not among them? Or that he went UDFA to the Skins?

CH was having a brilliant senior season, and that Cal game put him on a trajectory to break every record ever. But La Canfora (et al.) saying he wouldn't be surprised if he was a "top pick" given the injury and his first few years is just trying to sell ad space.

On a positive note, I suppose with RGIII in the apparent sunset of his career, and Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy both showing very little (consistently) in their backup performance, and with the Skins not picking up any other QBs, this could have been the best place Connor could have possibly gone.

Chip, I don't know if Washington is the absolute best opportunity place for Connor, but it is certainly a very good one. You don't have to go back very far to get to the point that 3 QB's on a roster was almost unheard of. That is no longer true, for several reasons. It is not the rule, but every year there are teams that need the 3rd QB, and that trend is growing. That was what gave Tuel a chance, remember. And if you were going to be the 3rd QB on an NFL roster, what better place that the team where RGIII is the #1? I can't imagine the odds Vegas would have to give to get somebody to bet that RGIII would make it for an entire season without injury. All in all, things probably worked out as well as they possibly could for Connor. Now it will be up to him to do something with the opportunity. Given that he has defied the odds several times in the past, I'd think twice before betting against him.

I'm not sure if you're saying I'm "betting against him." I literally said the Skins is probably the best possible place he could have gone, given their QB situation.

The larger point here is that La Canfora wrote some clickbait saying "don't be surprised" if CH is a top pick, which was then touted by CW. I pointed out before then that OF COURSE there would be reason to be surprised if that were the case. And indeed, he goes UDFA. He ends up in a good place, but clearly not without a great deal of sound and fury.

Consider also that even if he doesn't make an active roster this season, players assigned to the practice squad make a minimum salary of $6,300 per week. Not a bad gig.

As of today, he is no longer on the team. The Redskins experiment was brief. I was surprised to read a recent story of his earlier time as a pitcher when a coach left him in for 170 pitches. I can't believe he still has an arm.

I'm sorry… WHAT?! 170 pitches? What an idiot coach… Not acceptable in today's world of having numerous pitchers on roster at any given time. "Back in the old days" it might have been regular to go through the 7th or 8th inning regardless of pitch count but wow… Today's world… lets live there. Was this high school, little league, majors, minors?

While looking into this, it has an odd unspoken twist. It appears Halliday is stepping away. Very strange. Went through the whole process of drafting (or not), get onto a team and then quit?

Strange...I wonder what the rest of the story is. Is he not healed? Family issue? Did he read his mom's article and decide not to put her through it?

Clear a GA spot for him...can't think of a better person to be whispering in Falk/Bender/Hilinski's ear this season.

In an interview he said the 170 pitch day was in the 7th or 8th grade. And he pitched again two days later. He said his arm has always hurt. That sounds like going through life with an abysmal toothache. Nothing is worth that.

That's pretty much the worst time to be working a kid's arm like that.

There have been limits on how many innings high school kids are allowed to pitch for at least 25 years...so I'm assuming that this was a league outside of school. Either way, it's irresponsible coaching.

My kid, quite a while back, was in little league… They had 50 pitch limit and that was in a VERY little town. Can't imagine Spokane not having some sort of rule

I get what you're saying. And a GA spot might be just the thing. BUT it might not, too. There's obviously more to this story but to just quit… I don't know. Privacy is completely under-rated so I'm sure we'll never hear what happened here but wow. To go through all of that, to walk away… That seems… odd.

On another point but similar territory (and one I don't mean to slight CH on) but think of all the players CML has coached and could come on as an assistant… Harrell being the prime analogy. I betcha he could find NFL veterans that have been there, done that. And if they wanted to branch out into coaching, CML has proven that he likes fresh blood, different perspectives.
