In hindsight, isn't it interesting that Oregon State ...

threw everything they had (sink, plumbing included) at WSU and still trailed at half time? As for WSU's giving up more than 240 yards rushing (56 of that was on one play), the Beavers are doing this to everyone, and it hardly surprised me that they did it v. a d-line missing some key pieces that many assumed would be there this season (Oguayo, Lolohea, Moore). But give the Beavers some credit. It's too bad they've lost two QBs already (I'm assuming Luton's out for a while). For a back up, Blount is impressive both throwing and running.

I thought Coletto looked pretty good. I think he's the QB that our verbal blocked for at Arizona Western.

This was one of the first years in a while that I look at Oregon State and see the potential of them becoming decent. The real issue will be that Johnathan Smith will have to get some wins next year to sort of show something about building the team up. Right now they are 1-4 which in a first year can always be rough see us in 2012, see Scott Frost, see Chip Kelly etc.

OSU doesn't have the luxury of blue chip recruits so he's going to have to show some wins in the next couple of years if he's going to be able to recruit guys. Jefferson was a gigantic get for him, but he's got to get the lineman that can block for him over the next couple of years too.

4 of the lineman in the two deep are RS Seniors. So 40% are leaving. He did the right think recruiting a lot of lineman in his first class, but those take time to mature.

The Beav's have a BYE this week also. Smith said he is very hopeful Luton will be back by then. Agree with the other comment about the third string guy performing well. Couldn't believe we didn't cover the run on the first play he was in, as it was obvious the new QB wasn't ready to pass.

The Beavs have quality young skill players. They need as many o-line and defensive recruits as they can get, as fast as they can get them. His kids are playing hard for him, so if Smith can fix his defense he has a shot. As per that thread about Smith and Wulff, they opened the game about the same way our '08/'09 teams would have, but neither of our teams had the firepower or the heart to come back like that. And that plus his recruiting is what killed Wulff. His teams quit, and frankly I quit watching during that stretch. Couldn't take it. And if you come in and lose THE WHOLE TEAM as a new guy, there's no coming back from that. Give Andersen credit for seeing that and owning it like a man

Agree on Anderson, and wondering if his rebound from Wisconsin caused his expectations to be too high, as if he was going to prove to "those people back there" he could do it. He no doubt burnt a lot of bridges walking out, but I have a lot of respect for his willingness to walk away from all that money. Don't think he had too, except for the demands of his own conscience.

Smith is getting a lot of solid transfers, at least according to recruiting rankings. Around the same time they were getting boat-raced by us, it was announced that Tyjon Lindsey, a former 4-star recruit, had transferred there from Nebraska, joining two other former 4-star guys who transferred from Nebraska, Gebbia and Roberts. He also recently got former Oklahoma linebacker Addison Gumbs to transfer recently (another former 4-star guy).

More generally, from my own observations on recruiting, the "middle" is where it's tough. Right now, as a new, first-time head coach, Smith can sell a new and exciting future and a lot of PT opportunities. He also can associate himself with all of that success at UW. I'm sure he's claiming that he's going to have that place as "UW South" in a few years. It should actually be relatively easy for him to recruit right now, compared to what it might be in a few years, especially since he's coming from a program in the same geographic region and already has some relationships in the area.

It gets a lot tougher when you're in year 3, especially if the results haven't been great and your job status is questionable, and people can look at your actual record there instead of you going in with a clean slate and selling a dream. I think that's one reason why, as discussed at length here, Leach's 2014 class was disappointing overall. Leach made it through that -- with a ton of staff attrition over the years, too -- and things are clicking pretty well now. We'll see if Smith does, especially if the losses pile up this year and next.
