Just read a report on another site regarding Ayden Hector. Sounds like he never left Pullman after all and has been attempting to turn his life around off the field. Grades are up, he's been doing community volunteer work, and it sounds like he wants to rejoin the team.

Something to keep an eye on.

Thanks for sharing. Another reminder to me to not jump to conclusions based on unconfirmed reports and speculation found on the internet.

It's an interesting situation. I'm raising teenage boys, and I'm all about 2nd chances, but this is tough call for Dickert. Hector was involved in a very serious situation in high school, and we took a chance on him when everyone else bailed. Then he got caught trying to but booze with a fake ID, and was dismissed from the team. That's not a terrible thing, but the bad judgement is compounding.

It'll be interesting to see how Dickert handles this.

M’eh. Fake ID who cares? I had two of them.

You hate McLovin, too?

He wasn’t involved in that situation but was present that’s why he wasn’t charged, if I remember. I’d give him a second chance if what your saying is true. Volunteering and getting his life together is a positive sign.

A couple of things that I think it is fair to infer from both history and the recent news:

Hector was maturity challenged.
He actually made a pretty mature set of decisions following his last foul up. Community service and focus on grades were probably the two smartest commitments he could have made (and kept).
At this point I suspect that Dickert will be open to hearing Ayden make a case for lessons learned. However, Ayden will have to make that case for himself... and I have to believe that the leash would be short.

Long story short, I won't be surprised if he is playing in spring ball as a walk on, and we'll see where it goes from there.

I’d have moved on. You can learn lessons without giving up eligibility or practice time. He gave up over a year of football for trying to buy alcohol with a fake ID. Wtf???

I was a derelict coming into WSU. If folks hadn’t given me a second chance, including WSU, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Some of us just take longer to grow up. I’m still trying to. 😁

Pretty sure there was another incident after the fake ID that removed him from the team.

Gonna leave it at that.

There was more to it than that. It was death by a thousand paper cuts. I heard he entered the portal and there were no D1 takers. That tells you something. He had a Nationally covered incident in high school that caused schools to back off of him. Then he had the fake ID issue in Pullman along with other conduct and behavior issues. It reaches a point where coaches get fatigued.

If the rumors are true and he's stepped up in the classroom and off the field, then I'm all for 2nd chances. This will be more like his 3rd, 4th or 5th chance, so it's going to be up to him. You can only say, "come on, it was just a minor offense" so many times.

Was he held accountable for his involvement in the high school incident? It was bad. I get it. How many times will he be tried for the same offense? He lost a Stanford education over it.

So he goes to WSU. Gets caught trying to buy alcohol. His punishment was removal? Really?

I understand coaches get tired of dealing with dumb shit. I wouldn’t want to constantly
be dealing with immature players.

Losing a year of time? Is that punishment fair for the crime? Kids do dumb shit. He wasn’t the first kid at WSU to try and buy alcohol with a fake ID.

Maybe it was his parents along with the coaching staff that made the decision for him, and not the coaching staff alone. Trying to teach him.

I don't disagree with you, but there must have been an overall punk factor in play, or something that hasn't been reported yet. Either way, I hope he has turned it around in the classroom and in society.

Could be a really nice turnaround story for him. How many chances do you get in life? WSU just so happens to have a new (defensive) head coach and a couple of open spots at the safety position.

On the surface, how many years of eligibility should you forfeit for failing at buying alcohol?

We arent talking about an unlimited amount of time. To sit out a year???

Was he really on scholarship in the first pace?? I thought he walked on hoping to be granted one. I hope he turns this around because not even law enforcement views a fake ID as anything but laughable. Pot possession in the day, a single DUI at 18, being involved in a fight when young. This kind of stuff goes away if not repeated throughout their life. I have a lot family members in law enforcement who say to just forget about it, don't do it again and go on with your life. Good Lord!

There has to be more to his story. Perhaps he got frustrated and quit the team after the last incident? If so, I can see how the coaches would have said, whatever buddy.

Either way, it's something worth following.

I might be wrong, but I was under the impression they didn’t give him scholarship so he bolted first chance.

I believe your correct that was the rumor. Hopefully he wins the trust of the coach. I mean look at our QB he was on the same boat regarding booze.

The very best thing he can do is put the pads back on, bust his ass in the classroom and on the field, graduate and become a first round redemption story on ESPN.
I hope your vision becomes true. He was on the field just long enough to make it apparent that he has talent and can help the Cougs. Lets hope he is ready to demonstrate it.

It really interesting he would still be on campus. Can this be confirmed? If he is, he has paid his dues. Let him play.

Hopefully this kid can get back on the team, provided he has done enough in the eyes of the coaches to warrant such an opportunity. He is a baller and with 3 Safeties (all starters) not returning next year, he would be sorely needed.

Abe Lucas could move.

SD, I'm not sure that "derelict" is the best word. "Miscreant", certainly. "Delinquent", possibly. But "Derelict" brings with it some other connotations?

Peace, my friend. ;)

Maybe Hector had a lot of issues to deal with, it all came rather easily to him at first, star in HS, Stanford offer, riding high, and I am sure football consumed him, it's almost like he took if for granted and then his life seemed to start coming apart. Sometimes in life, when you are struggling, you have to step back and simplify your life to get things turned around. And at times it requires you to let go of things that are important to you. I am sure football was important to him, but life, school, and family will get you further than football, so maybe he made the choice to step back and focus on himself and the most important things around him, knowing if he took care of that, football might still be there, if he got his act together. I am more than willing to give him a second or third chance, if he has a new found direction in life. I made my share of mistakes as a teenager, but at the same time I didn't have the spotlight and pressure on me like Ayden did. Regardless of if he plays football again or not, I hope he gets his life on the right path, with the Stanford offer we know he has the academic ability, so I hope he finds peace and success. And if he makes it back on the football field that's a bonus, he has many talents, and I would hate to see any of them go to waste.
