Is Dickert Doba, J Wilcox and Lake who are defensive coaches

with a more conservative approach to offense? And is he like three plus Wulff who did not have a ton of people to drawn upon for completing a staff?

I always prefer a coach who had philosophies on both sides of the ball, meaning they had a system. Price had a system, and he married it with Doba's system. Leach had an offensive system but had more flexibility on the defensive side of the ball. With a system you can get under the radar guys to be very productive. River Cracraft. Al Genatone are two names that were productive and were plugged into a system.

WSU is partly screwed because the offense they have is so unique who do you hire to make a decent transition assuming JDL elects to stay? Graham Harrell doesn't do much for me. I am not seeing Mike Leach type toughness at USC. But on the other side of things, I look at Kingsbury and thought he was the ultimate flop in Arizona, and would be repeating what happened at Tech. So who knows.

I fully expect to get hammered this weekend. and any chance at a bowl game comes down to UW and Arizona. And to be honest, you cant go 1-2 with a loss to USU in non conference. And clearly the USU loss hurt the most.

There are a lot of hybrid offensive systems out there that incorporate aspects of the air raid, run and shoot, etc. Dual threat QBs are a thing now, so there shouldn't be a shortage of capable offensive coaches for Dickert to interview.

If Dickert does earn the permanent job, my biggest question(s) have to do with recruiting (including the portal and current player retention) and the defense next season. Can we find some bodies to plug into the front-7 and help with the run defense?

We have an annoyingly difficult out of league schedule next season that includes a trip to Wisconsin, and home games vs. Idaho and Colorado State. Much like this year, the trajectory of the season will lean heavily on how we do vs. CSU. We'll get Apple Cup, Oregon, Cal, Utah, and ASU in Pullman. Not easy, but it sets up for a pretty exciting home season.

Even if we do decide to retain Dickert, I suspect that he'll be on a fairly short leash. That's kind of what I'm leaning towards at this point unless the wheels come off to end the season. Keep him on board to stabilize things, bring in a new set of offensive coaches, and we'll see where we are in 3 years.

It will always be a struggle to get the 2 players he needs for his defense. Expect Wisconsin to line up and run right at those 2 positions to test them.

On another note. We already have conference games at USC, at Stanford, Oregon, UW, Utah, ASU. Playing at Wisconsin makes little sense at all.

It doesn’t matter who we hire, this type of scheduling isn’t helpful to us. We have all we can do to hang with Utah State and Colorado State.

Patrol listened to local Seattle radio with John Canzano talking about pac 12 and the best an in the conference per his opinion. JDL was at the top of the list .

What is amazing the sec use to suck at the qb position . The pac 12 has lost its way at the position . The qb play overall in the conference is below average at best .

If you go back thru WSU’s schedules… it is ridiculous the amount of games WSU had no business scheduling. They needed money. I get it. But the ides that you are moving your program forward by losing is baffling. There were numerous years WSU lost a non con game they should never have agreed to play and it cost the program a bowl game. At what point do you start doing what those teams did and schedule games you’re heavily favored in??? They did… they lost. Utah State, Eastern, Idaho, etc. Simply amazing.

I think the QB play is because of a few things…

The best talent is West is leaving. That hurts.

The West is poorly coached and developed. There are more 3,4,5 star kids in Texas than there are in NM, CO, WY and MT and west.

When every kid is a development project, how do you line up NFL prospect qbs?

Im starting to think the heavy passing that has become college football is too much. The kids either cant grasp the schemes or the coaches cant teach them effectively. Either way, I think we are seeing kids being asked to do things they either cant do or arent ready to do. And it shows in the stats.

no reason at all to play Wisconsin, ever. scheduling losses is insane

And their fans are absolute a$$hats.

Go to Vanderbilt, Duke, Syracuse, Wake Forest if you're going to go on the road - they all have money. And are beatable. Low end P5 teams.

If we retain Dickert, it's fair to assume we'll also retain JDL, Stribling, Victor, Hobert, Ollie, and Moore. That would be a strong group of skill players. Maybe Harris considers coming back as well for his extra season? We'll need to rebuild the RB position, but maybe we can find help in the portal.

In these days of the transfer portal, I wouldn't presume anything.

There's going to be as much time spent re-recruiting the current roster as finding new talent.

Hell, the Cougs could end up playing against all those guys. It's AAU travel ball with shoulder pads lately. Teammates one weekend, opponents the next.

Go look at our basketball roster if you don't think that's the new normal.

I wouldn't travel that far to play a nonleague game. What's the upside? It doesn't help recruiting. It's not a practical trip for the alumni or the families of the players. It's certainly not a convenient trip for the student athletes.

There are only a handful of situational big-boy nonleague games that I'd consider if I were WSU, and they'd have to agree to play us in Pullman on the flip side unless we get creative and play someone like Texas, Michigan, or an SEC team in Las Vegas. That's something I hope the new commissioner actualizes. Schedule a cause driven annual P12 vs. ACC game in Las Vegas for ALS research, Alzheimer's awareness, etc. Seems like an easy way to excite fan bases.

This year, at least, Wake Forest is much more impressive than Wisconsin. But I do understand that the Badgers are traditionally a powerhouse team. At least Wisconsin will be coming to Pullman in the future and it's always a rare treat for fans to see a good program at Martin Stadium. Future schedules include home-and-home games with San Diego State, Fresno State, Kansas, Kansas State, and Mississippi State. Those could be tough games (excluding Kansas, hopefully) but they aren't as traditionally challenging as Wisconsin, so I don't really see a trend towards body bag games for WSU.

I understand where the AD was coming from in years past. The check the other team wrote (Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Ohio State, etc) probably paid a lot of bills.

But this is a different era and has been for a long time. Every game you lose in non con adds a game you have to win in league play. Those are tough games for WSU. Hell, they’re tough games for a lot of PAC 12 teams. The ability to go 3-6 in league and go bowling is crucial. Being consistent in bowl games is an important tool for WSU in recruiting.

I agree, and it's not just important for recruiting. It energizes the entire fan base. Diehards might not get excited about a trip to the Arizona Bowl, but the casual alumnus does. There's a perception of success when you go .500 or better, especially at WSU.

I doubt Wisconsin ever actually comes to Pullman. Will pay us some $, though. More generally, I am and always have been in favor of scheduling wins, not "interesting" matchups. Get the interesting matchups in a bowl game when you're already playing 9 Power 5 games in conference play.

They aren't going to return the trip to Pullman.

Indiana, Illinois yearly would be a good place to go as well versus playing Wisconsin.

Glad COUG, totally agree. I do like we have a home and home with Wisconsin. First Big 10 opponent EVER to come to Pullman.

Take a look at our biggest non-cons ever to come to Pullman, and you can count them on one hand:

Colorado, (pre-Pac-12), Boise St., and BYU. That's it.

Super excited to get Wisconsin at home in 2023. Should be a sellout.

Illinois came to Pullman in 1998, IIRC.

Furthermore, I don't see Wisconsin backing out of the return trip.

Good memory, etown. That was the year following the Rose Bowl and was 1 of 3 wins on the year with the 2-headed Menckebaum at QB. Cougs started off 3-0 beating Illinois, Boise State, and Idaho then closed the season with 8 straight losses in conference play. Good times.

This has been a thread before but, hell, make it a good trip at least:

Vanderbilt - Nashville is cool.
Kentucky - Bourbon.
Tulane - NOLA for days.
Memphis - Beale Street
SDSU - hell, yeah. Tacos, tequila and direct flight.
Boston College - the hahbah and lobstah rolls.

Boy, that big BYU matchup sure got the fans to fill up the place.

UNLV is such a no-brainer on the good trips list it barely needs to be listed, too. I'd rather see us play in the bowl game there, though.

Vegas holds absolutely no cultural appeal or interest to me.

Lots of cool cities around the country besides LV. Can go there every year for basketball.

Me either, but as far as Coug fans' #1 road trip destination goes, accounting for lots of cheap direct flights, cheap lodging, and various activities a lot of our fans enjoy, Vegas is #1 on the list for road trip destinations. If it's a list of places I personally want to go, it would be a lot closer to your list.

18-22 year old students, "don't know what they don't know".

Also, 3 straight home games, were absolutely brutal for fans that don't live within 3 hours.
Well, sure ... bottom line is that the fans didn't show up for one of the biggest noncon matchups we've ever had. There almost always will be an excuse for our fans to not show up. In this case, BYU, one of the better opponents we've ever brought in, coming off a great season last year and a top-10 team not that long ago, couldn't get people to show up as the third home game in a row.

Also, I'm fairly certain we'll have 18-22 year old students be the primary ones using (or not using) the student section for any opponent. Not that they move the needle on revs anyway.

I get three straight home games, but that's consistent with the point ... the fans aren't showing up for that whether it was BYU or Weber State. Maybe they would for Wisconsin, but I doubt they would have a full house for Wisconsin if one of the common excuses was at play. Hope we get to find out.

Lord knows I've been wrong about this stuff before, but I don't think they're going to back out of the trip.
