I think there's a strong likelihood that JDL enters the transfer portal. If so, signing Ward obviously becomes a huge priority for us. We will also be in major scramble mode to retain our young WR talent.

This offseason is about to get crazy.

What leads you to believe that JDL is likely to jump?

A couple of unconfirmed reports from a few people along with the information we already no. Might not be anything here, but I'm certainly leary.

For starters, there were rumors about JDL transferring immediately after the Apple Cup. Then we had the Sun Bowl where he didn't return at halftime, which wasn't all that surprising given the beating he took.

Where the plot started to thicken is that we offered ICW transfer QB Ward immediately after the Sun Bowl. Then there were a couple of reports that JDL didn't travel home with the team. That's not necessarily concerning, as he may have simply flown back to Hawaii. The last couple of things are what has me thinking there's something here. JDL's Dad tweeted (and then deleted) a post about "the disrespect...gonna be interesting now" right after we offered Ward. Then a WSU alumnus from Hawaii who I DM with on Facebook said JDL is trying to decide whether or not to transfer. This is a guy I've chatted with since I 2018 when I attended a CAF watch party in Hawaii. Lastly, another website mentioned that they have asked WSU multiple times for injury updates on JDL, but haven't heard back from them.

This all adds up to nothing at this point, but if nothing else, there are a lot of coincidences in play.

Ward getting offered should tell you all you need to know. I’ve thought since the day that Morris was hired Ward was coming here. Ward is very good, personably I think he’s probably better than JDL.

JDL showed up on campus knowing the new HC, having played in the scheme already and used that advantage to win a starting job.

Enter Morris and potentially Ward…. hmmmm

Compete!

You are gonna compete anywhere you go. If you are worried about someone else showing up to compete, go somewhere else.
Especially at QB. What P5 QB room isnt four deep with kids who were supposed to be the next Peyton Manning out of HS.

I don't think JDL is leaving, he is going to be playing in an exciting offense suited to his skill set. NIL money is pocket change in the long run if he develops to the best of his ability. And if he does leave, I hope we have a good fall back position, we do need to sign another QB in this class regardless.

If you are a P5 kid and dont wanna compete there are plenty of d3 schools looking for qbs.

The NIL deals will be great for some kids. The kids that get paid and play.

The kids that take NIL deals to sign and then don’t play??? All they did was be a willing participant in stockpiling talent away from other teams.

The most valuable thing a player has is their eligibility. If you aren’t on the field you aren’t going pro. You sold your playing time for short money right now and removed your long money in the NFL.

JDL isn't scared of losing his job to a guy from Incarnate Word. We are thin at QB, we have no backups. Offering Ward and JDL staying makes perfect sense.

I have always felt this was coming. I hope I am wrong cause I have learned to love the kid. JDL not palying the second half and then 15 minutes after the game they announce the offer. My guess is the staff said go ahead and announce it. Unfortunately for him the NIL, the money and a decent fit would have been Oregon.

I believe his options will be limited IE where he can go. The big option at this point is Hawaii. Does he get to spring ball and try things out, see where the chips fall and then transfer out after spring ball. I don't think he can transfer before then anyway.

Regardless I enjoyed watching him and his growth. And since people do call him a pussy, I would take a line from Me Myself and Irene where Jim Carrey gets a price check on Vagiclean. If JDL is a pussy, what better type of sponsor.

Has everyone forgotten about Dickert talking about building the offense around DeLaura? If he had any sense that DeLaura might bounce I doubt he’d say that publicly. I would imagine Dickerts had a heart to heart with him about the future. Maybe he does transfer who knows but I’d bet on him being back next year.

That is not insecurity. It is connecting the dots. Growing up my dad was below the president. He wasn't "insecure" when he saw the president get blown out. He would hire a head hunter and the moving van was in the driveway no more than two months later. I moved 8 times so you learn to read things, the things that are said and not said.

That is a bet I would take and hope to lose

You are bringing in Ward to be a back up? By being in the portal he isn't transferring to be a back up. And if he is, he will be gone by next December. That is assuming he is going to be a Coug....and not sure I would make that assumption.

Oklahoma's starting QB entered the portal so that he could talk to other schools. He said he might come back to OK.

You are correct: it's gonna be a crazy offseason. Not just for us

I am not sure as Dillon Gabriel just flipped to OU after supposedly being on UCLA's campus to start class today.

Now the rumor is Caleb Williams to UCLA. Even if it doesn't end up true, my goodness.

NIL is a big deal, and not just for the 5-star big money kids. Kids like JDL, who at 5’11, aren’t statistically like to cash in on big NFL paydays, might see college ball as their best bet for a money grab.

That is coach speak. Dickert is not gonna make Morris start JDL over Cam Ward.

Whoever wins the starting battle between JDL and Cam Ward, even if that were to be Ward, is gonna start. Dickert is not gonna Force JDL to be the starter, no matter how much he Coach Speaks about building offense around JDL

We were always going to offer a transfer QB. We brought Guarantano last year, he didn’t pan out and only had 1 to play. Cooper is gone. Gabalis is #2, and has some potential but isn’t ready to compete for the starting job. Probably isn’t the guy we want to be one snap away from starting.
A coach wants it to be a tough decision picking a starting QB. It means you’ve got two near-equals, and it’s not a big talent drop to your backup. Also means your starter has some built-in motivation…or he should. (And Hopefully it’s not a Mencke-Birnbaum decision.)
Bringing in someone who can compete for the starting job is the best thing for the team, and it’s what a coach should do. A QB and team leader should understand that. He doesn’t have to like it, but a team leader should expect it and have the confidence that he’s going to keep the job.

JDL got hurt but your daddy moved a lot isn't connecting anything.

Oh…the more I read between the lines if ward comes I don’t see JDL staying . I could be easily be wrong … but I don’t think so in this case .

He may have been injured but if he did it on the field he played through a ton of pain. I watched the first half again. There was one second at the end of the first quarter he might have turned an ankle . But he got up and was running around the entire second quarter.

There was a play at the end of the second quarter rolling to his left he could have slightly hyperextended his knee. I wonder if he did it after the last series on the sideline .

Do me a favor, review the first and second quarter and show me where he may have potentially rolled up his leg and show me where he is remotely limping .

If you are going to call him a faker and a liar, its on you to prove it.

There was one play where he was scrambling to his left and threw the ball away before getting knocked down pretty hard. I guess that could have been where it happened. It also could have been something he re-aggravated in practice leading up to the game, and with the way our protection looked in the 1st half, the coaches may have decided to get him out of there.

He has worn a brace all season following the SC game where he was injured, but the brace was off as he walked off the field at halftime. He had a noticeable limp, so I don't think it's a coverup situation for something. He made big effort to get from Honolulu to Seattle to Arizona to El Paso for the game, so it would be strange to assume he suddenly decided to go off in the locker room at halftime. That would have leaked by now I think.

That was the play towards the end of the second quarter I referenced . I was thinking he my have hyperextended his knee slightly, although he wasn’t limping when he got up.

Bit they keep talking about X-rays and lower leg and not sure how he could have done it on that play.

Not sure I quite said that . I have three possible scenarios. One, he some how aggregated it but played through the pain and the the hit he took or the pain was noticeable . Two, could have done it on the sideline by several different ways . For example got frustrated and kicked a cooler or a bench. Third, he got taken to task and said to himself I am not going back out there. From what I have seen through 12 games I would hope and think the first two are more viable.

Who cares, it's the Sun Bowl, he has 3 more years at WSU, a slight sprain in the knee or ankle could lead to a more severe injury, like an ACL tear if he kept playing. So play it safe so he is healthy next year, I don't have a problem with that. Look he's been a warrior all year, but he had an injury against USC, tried to play through it and didn't do well. If he can't run, his confidence drops, and the way they were blocking he was a sitting duck back there. I think people are reading far more into this than they need to. I am sure JDL and the coaches came to a decision that was best for everyone regarding his injury.
