"I met with Ernie earlier today and let him know I would be making a change in the leadership of our basketball program," said Chun. "We appreciate all that Ernie has done for Washington State but at this time we need a new direction to energize our fan base and return the program to prominence. I am optimistic that our returning students-athletes give us an immediate opportunity to move our program in a positive trajectory."

Well, you predicted more than 4 conference wins this year and you mocked everyone who said EK needed to be fired by insisting it would never happen and that we all needed to get used to the idea of Kent coming back next year and perhaps beyond. So maybe you will be wrong on this, too.

Glad Cougar

we shall see but the tea leaves say differently I said four conference wins and all of the cowards would not put up a measly $100. It cost WSU 4.2 mil on top of a new coach. The new coach will not accept $300-$400 K . He will want a salary commensurate with PAC 12 standards . I foresee Chun getting the boot soon after Leach departs after next year. The cost overrun and dept just got heavier. How is that for a prediction?

Maybe Bill Moos will finally step up and make a donation to his alma mater. Did you ever think of that?

You have no idea what arrangement has been made to pay Ernie his $4 million. There are taxes to consider. Beyond that, it's going to be interesting watching you bitch over the next couple years.

Hell observer i figured that with all your support and past criticisms that you would contribute a few million to make up the difference What is the old saying,." be careful you may .did get what you asked for" it will be hilarious.

El wants his cake and to eat it too. He spent the entire 2018-2019 extolling Ernie and claiming fans should support the program no matter what and how they didn't know anything. Well guess what? We knew.

That lasted all of about 14 minutes until he turned sourpuss, down Joe - before the next coach was even named.

Shocked he hasn't been cheering Gubrud's broken leg - he's usually chirping about how sh*tty the starting QB is any way.

How do you know I didn't?

You have no idea what my financial status is.

I think reality is more important than predictions. And the reality is Ernie Kent was a failure at WSU. Now you make it all about finances probably because you couldn't justify keeping Kent around based on the actual results and win/loss record. Personally, I think Chun actually enhanced his status by making the decision and, for all we know, he has come up with a viable plan to pay
EK off. Perhaps there were some big donors who would like to see a better brand of basketball. Who knows? At this point, all I care about is getting a coach who will give us all some hope.

By the way, all of a sudden, there seems to be a lot more interest in Cougar basketball right now if you base it on the chatter in this forum. Wonder why? I certainly didn't see this kind of excitement during the season.

It's because we've been like abused spouses for five years. We're free! We're free!

What plan? He must have a donor or donors step up cause he will be paid the terms in which he is owed .

In another thread on the football board, somebody posted Leach saying that he is happy at WSU, and is happy with Chun as AD, and with Pres Schultz.

Altho not impossible, Leach is NOT BLOODY DAMN LIKELY to leave.

In fact if Leach leaves within the next 1,2 years, and if Chun leaves, is fired, within the next 1,2 years I will literally write down these words on paper, and literally eat the words.

Man.....you are captain frickin' sunshine today. I briefly considered that you might be Ernie Kent....but then realized he just got paid $4.2 million to head back to Mexico with his ol' girlfriend so he wouldn't be a cranky little twat the way that you've been the past 24 hours.

Not everyone is wired for publicity.

Leach wasn't ready, almost gone. What happened: 1. Bill Moos left. 2. There was a new AD position to fill. 3. There was a lot of UNKNOWN, UNCERTAINTY. 4. Because of that UNKNOWN, UNCERTAINTY, etc, Tenn offered Leach. Leach thought about it, was going to turn it down(Or so Leach seemed to hint at after the fact), but didnt get the chance to either turn it down, accept it, because job was given to another, before Leach responded.

But lets say your right(your not but making a point.), that Leach WAS ready to leave THEN. Just because LEACH WAS ready to leave THEN, does NOT mean that Leach READY to leave NOW.

There is a big difference between NOW and BACK THEN. BACK THEN, there was UNKNOWN, UNCERTAINTY, A NEW AD, ETC, so it understandable that Leach might have wondered if situation get, go bad, and that that, tempt him to leave.

But NOW things have changed. There is not a lot of UNKNOWN, UNCERTAINTY. Leach is HAPPY with Chun, Schultz, etc, NOW.

HAPPY coaches, usually dont leave when they are HAPPY with their situation, money, etc.

Leach is HAPPY. Therefore Leach PROBABLY will NOT leave.

Now IF IF Leach were UNHAPPY, or UNCERTAIN, like he was before, then he Leach might leave.

But Leach is Happy, PROBABLY NOT leaving.

So like I said, altho NOT impossible for Leach to leave.

Its NOT BLOODY DAMN LIKELY THAT LEACH WOULD LEAVE SOON, WITHIN 1,2,3 years.

Now after 3,4 years, that might change, and we will see what happens.

Chun did what he had to do, as for the money WSU couldn't afford to fire Ernie, but the cost of keeping him around was even more.

Leach probably will take a hard look at the next school that offers him 7 million

Jim Walden will probably have Chris Ball ready by then.

Probably. But do you think Walden will either be the AD or the Prez like he was back in 2007/08? I don't think WSU will hire back at those positions he held before.

Does anyone know if Ed Haskins out of a job, or is that up to Ernie's replacement?
The reason why I ask is because I used to know Ed's brother, Aaron Haskins, who played for the COUGS when I was there (Class of '82). We became friends with Aaron and his wife in the 1990's. Aaron played saxophone in our wedding, and unfortunate died several years ago.
Thousands attended his memorial service at The City Church.
.
Aaron was a (slight) legend back in the day, and again, his brother is Ed former Garfield HS head coach, who was Ernie's assistant.
.
Do you think Ed is out of a job?

Assistants typically stay through the transition. I don't know how many but I would assume Seltzer and Haskins would wait to see if they can hook on with the new coach.

May I ask what changes in 4 or five years other than he will be in his 60's ?

On a sad note, Coach Haskins' mother passed away today. Condolences to his family.

It wasnt 4,5 years ago Ed. It was about 1, 2, years ago.

Changes:

1. New Pres, Floyd died, replaced by Schultz.
There was UNKNOWN, UNCERTAINTY

2. Problems with, between Schultz, Football program, Leach, AKA, Barber, etc.(That was during, or just barely before, or just barely by skin of teeth after Tenn offered Leach.
This CAUSED UNCERTAINTY, UNHAPPINESS.

3. Bill Moos left( that was either during, or before Tenn offered Leach.

4. There was UNKNOWN, UNCERTAINTY about who the new AD was going to be.

The bottom line Ed, is that Leach was faced with UNKNOWN, was UNHAPPY, UNCERTAIN with, because of the above points.

Now things have changed since then.

1. Leach is now happy with Schultz

2. Leach is happy with Chun.

3. New better contract.

4. More money then before.

5. Gameday in Pullman.

6. 11-2 season, Alamo bowl win.

7. There is NOT big unknown.

8. Leach is more certain.

9. Leach is HAPPY

10. Leach has said he is happy.

11. Leach has said he is happy with both Schultz, Chun.

The bottom line Ed, is that Leach was unhappy, uncertain, was facing unknown, etc, because of Floyd dying, new Pres Schultz, problems with Schultz, in the beginning, Bill Moos leaving, New AD, etc, and that that is why Leach was offered by Tenn(That and Leach being a great coach), and why Leach was flirting with, tempted by Tenn's offer.

The bottom line Ed, is that things have changed, Leach is happy, and PROBABLY PROBABLY will not leave within the next 1, 2, maybe 3 years.

IT's Just NOT likely.

It ISNT IMPOSSIBLE tho.

And Leach may, might leave someday.

And if he does, it will be to the right college, and there is about only 3 to 5 right colleges that Leach would consider.

And those 3 to 5 colleges are probably unlikely to fire their coach, and if do, probably wont hire Leach.

Also as Leach gets older, the harder it will be for Leach to leave because of his age.

Also Leach is in a awesome fit, ideal situation, and he knows it, and that is part of why he is happy.

So if Leach leaves, he leaves. I am not worried about it, because Leach is not likely to leave, and even if Leach unlikely leaves, WSU will probably find a decent, ok replacement.

El C, saying Leach is going to leave SOON, and Chun is going to be FIRED SOON, is REDICULOUS.

And you Ed, should know that Leach is PROBABLY NOT going to leave anytime soon.

And you should know why.

And shouldnt participate in El C's REDICULOUSNESS

A lot of what you said makes sense, but it's important to remember that a week before he left for Virginia, Tony Bennett said he was happy in Pullman.........

Moral of the story? Any coach might leave at any time, it's just part of college coaching.

Wow... not sure why of two things . Why the long long answer for what will change after say three years that will prompt him to finally leave. You said he isn’t going anywhere for the next three years. But maybe in four. Why would he choose to leave at that time, and more importantly why would an industry that likes young want to hire a 61 year old coach and one that not every AD and President feels he can work with.

What is Elcs “REDICULOUSNESS” that I am participating in? That I think TB was set up in a no lose situation in a very tough environment in Pullman? Or that I don’t think without dad he turns wsu around after the Paul Graham years ? Or that uva is a much easier job to have success. Or that I wish he left the next coach with an experienced ball handler to close out games? Or that he didn’t have two classes that were extremely problematic?

Where I don’t agree with Elc is I really don’t care what Bennett does, I don’t follow itbthst closely . I don’t root against him, I just don’t care .

And well I hate to see anyone get fired especially after the hours they spend trying to get better, I am not sure this team gave Chun any reasons for hope.

A lot of what you said makes sense, but it's important to remember that a week before he left for Virginia, Tony Bennett said he was happy in Pullman.........

Moral of the story? Any coach might leave at any time, it's just part of college coaching.

Coaches are happy until they aren’t.

Fans have a TOTALLY different mentality than coaches. Coaches are about employment. If they can extend their current situation for more money and more time to earn money, they will do it. They know that with a couple down years, their employment will be at risk. So they jump. They are self interested and mercenary in their approach.

Geographic considerations aside (and some people will move for their profession, some won’t - personally my geographic location has outweighed professional opportunities due to family, proximity to recreational opportunities, preference of climate, etc), coaches are by nature transients. They travel for their jobs, they move every few years, that’s the life they choose. They have virtually no attachment because their next job could be their last. Or they could be the next big thing and they need to seize opportunity before they aren't.

Fans can’t grasp that because they are emotionally attached to an institution. Their livelihood isn’t at risk. They love all the intangible things about their alma mater and expect the same loyalty. It's a false premise - there is no loyalty for coaches. These guys live with their heads on a swivel and have to constantly assess their next move. Because they know if things turn south, their head is on the chopping block.
