New AD Patrick Chun put out a statement a short time ago saying Daugherty would not return as WBK head coach in 2018-19. Here's the full statement from WSU:

"Washington State University Director of Athletics Patrick Chun announced Tuesday that June Daugherty will not return as the women's basketball head coach for the 2018-19 season.

"Thank you to Coach June Daugherty for her years of service to Washington State University," said Chun. "We appreciate everything she has done for our student-athletes, women's basketball and this university."

Daugherty, hired prior to the 2007-08 campaign, has guided the Cougars for the past 11 seasons, posting a combined 130-218 record, including three WNIT appearances.

A national search for WSU's next head coach will begin immediately."

i saw this coming. She should have resigned and probably was given the chance to do so

Not that it matters, but it is kind of interesting. She apparently had some sort of "procedure" and recovered from it but wasn't able to come back after it (I would say a stent, but you can be back within days after that). So why fire her when she was unlikely to be able to come back and coach at all. Or should have chosen not to for her own sake. As you say, she probably had the chance, and should have taken it. Although at 61, with obvious physical conditions, and an unemployable spouse, I can see why she would hold out for the severance. Maybe they cut some deal to keep her as an employee for a while (insurance). Who knows.

If you look at WBB all-time:
All time W/L %'s: 40.4%, 31.6% (Including CJD)
Harold Rhodes: 41.7%, 30.6%
CJD: 37.4%, 24.6%

Rhodes must be about what - 62 now? Maybe we can find him and bring him back. In hindsight we should have kept him another 19 years. Thanks Dick Rickson.

I thought we should have moved on from Rhodes but nobody has done better than he did at WSU. That's actually really sad when you think about it. I really thought the last 2 years were going to be a turning point but we have seen the same kind of results and actually worse this season.

Rhodes typerfies the woes of our WBB. One bad move after another. He was let go despite having the most talented team we've ever had and the best player in Trica Lamb (1st team all Pac-10) returning. Hell, if he couldn't win with that group in 99-00, fire his arse. But his firing could be compared to firing Raveling after 81-82 with Guy Williams et. al. coming back. We haven't seen that level of talent in either program since. Then to hire someone who was completely nuts, who promptly ran that talent off, before the next season started. In 3 short season's she completely Wulffed the program, and we have been the Oregon State of WBB since.

It's time to hire the George Raveling equivalent in WBB, the openly gay coach, and own the high ground.

Well actually Sherri Murrell was an openly gay coach - the only one in the NCAA when she was at Portland State. See article below. However, she was in the closet while at WSU. And interesting, the article says that she resigned from WSU with 3 years left on her contract. Did well for a while at PSU.

Tricia Lamb. Not ugly.

nor Jenni Ruff
nor Emma Joneby

Great column over on Brand Y about CEK.

Also over there, I was reminded that CJD was on the search committee that hired our new AD. That had to be a harsh one. Thanks for hiring me, you're fired.

Bill Moos' (contract) extended middle finger precludes that. Unless President Schultz has a secret stash of disposable cash, Ernie is piling on dollars to his State of Washington pension plan.

It's probably cheaper to plant some child porn on his laptop or hire some sorority girls to put CEK in a compromising position. OLE!

Murrell didn't resign as I remember it. Sterk was ready to bring her back and then the UW fired Daugherty and that was it for Murrell.

Well that is not what the article said that I linked, and it is not what the below article (quote from Sterk) says either. And dammit, if it is on the internet, especially if it is also in print, it is always the truth. And if I say it, it is like it came out of the Bible. Or the Dead Sea Scrolls.

March 19 - UW fires CJD
April 5 - CSM resigns
April 18 - WSU hires CJD

I guess my memory is off...again. I remember Sterk announcing Murrell was coming back, then Daugherty was fired, then the "move". I guess I found it suspicious and decided she was fired but you are correct that every article says Murrell resigned. Excerpt from the Times:

>Murrell, 39, met with her team, then told reporters at a news conference, “I think I put my heart and soul into this job and the results didn’t match the effort.”

She said the losing seasons “took a toll on me” and said resigning “was the hardest decision I ever had to make.”

Sterk was surprised when a reporter asked if fired Washington Huskies coach June Daugherty could be a candidate to replace Murrell.

“I wasn’t ready for that one,” he said of the question. Then he added, “There’s nothing to prevent her from being a candidate.”

Sterk said Murrell “is leaving the program in better shape than when she arrived.”

I liked Coach Daugherty. But, it was probably time for her to move on. She did upgrade the talent level, but the results just weren't there. It does show that you can recruit players to Pullman. I wish her family well, as well as the rest of her staff.

I hope that the players stay and build for next year. They are one or two bigger players away from having a good team next year. Any coach will improve this team with sound coaching and fundamental basketball

Could say the same thing about the men's program.

Glad Cougar

Someone should want this gig because it seems like potentially a quick turnaround. We return Hristova and Molina for 2 years, Brown and Swedlund for a year. Maybe the new coach could convince McClure to come back? Regardless there is a solid core of talent coming back from a team that only won 3 Pac 12 games. Seems like a team that could turnaround quickly if the new coach could bring in a couple of good recruits to augment what's already on the roster.

The talent is there.and the team may improve dramatically with a new coaching staff and a couple of recruits.

The selection of the new coach will provide more insight on how the new AD will handle his job

Interesting twitter today - Lou Brown announced that she would be looking for a new school to play her senior season. She has been in Pullman for four years so I am sure she would be a grad transfer and eligible to play next season.

I have to think McClure and now with Brown that the decision on Daugherty was in the works for a period of time. Wish they would at least wait to see who is hired but can't blame them for moving on when the coach that recruited you is let go. The UW was pretty much gutted last year. We might be staring down the barrel when the dust settles.

Bunch of intrigue all year on the WBB team. Neither of the not signed girls will be showing up either so there are other openings.

Perhaps it will be iterating to see what happens with the Molina sisters. Perhaps the new coach can persuade brown to stay?

Someone mentioned a TV Station (assuming in Spokane) mentioned the Idaho head coach was a candidate. I don’t know anything about him but we haven’t ever poached a coach from UI. Briann January hasn’t coach much but wondered about her. She’s very young but is an accomplished player from Spokane.

If you mean that WSU has not poached a basketball coach from Idaho, that is true. But, WSU hired current head swimming coach, Tom Jager, from the University of Idaho and also current head track coach, Wayne Phipps, from the University of Idaho.

Good point and corrections. I am not sure how I forgot about Phipps. I wanted Li Li from Arizona but Phipps has done a solid job especially with cross country.

January is gearing up to be the head coach at ASU. She had a unique arrangement where she could coach at ASU and also play pro ball. She would be excellent - but she ain't coming to WSU with her resume.

I tell you what though -if WSU wanted to go off the board for 50, they'd approach Freddie Rehkow at CV. That guy pumps out talent and probably already has close to 25 to 30 years in the state pension program. For a couple hundred K each year, I'm sure he'd suffer through getting his brains beat out for a PERS pension of luxury forever.

That’s too bad on January but did wonder if that was the deal. When I see her on the ASU bench I see a really good coach in the making. On the CV coach it’s whether he could get those kids to Pullman. I believe Daugherty had a good relationship with the Stars but she wasn’t able to do much with it.

I think WSU should aim higher than a high school coach. This is a Pac 12 program after all. Anyway, if they were to look for a high school coach, I think Bobbie Awa has a much better resume' and her players have routinely chose to become Cougars.

There are lots of choices for the next head coach. There are former assistants, head coaches of many programs and a lot of out of the box choices. Pat Chun replaced a WBB coach last year so he no doubt has quite a list. Far as I am concerned its about both recruiting and coaching in WBB. I don't see the Idaho coach being nearly good enough to do the job. Certainly not a Spokane HS coach.

Yeah...Spokane high school coaches are awful.

(Jud Heathcoate).

And I'd be willing to be Freddie could de-pants June with a whiteboard and a minute left on the clock.

Two things, Heathcote came in as an assistant coach, not the head coach. Plus, having to go back 54 four years to make a point is a weak point.

Around the same time as the Kent hire, the alums went nuts when Moos "went cheap" and got the Idaho guy for not much money.
Men's XTC team nationally ranked 3 years in a row with local kids (and not Kenyans)

Meanwhile UA AD and their track program is a mess. The 2016 Pac12 XTC meet they hosted in Tucson was a fiasco.

Fine. I'll take Matty McIntrye at GPrep then. He recruits more D-1 talent than Ernie any way.

Brian is a very good recruiter and has a lot of assistant experience but from what I can tell from the AD we will be looking for head coaching experience. That said Brian should get a close look.

Yeah but we had Jud as a WSU assistant and never bothered offering him the head coach job.....
