June leaves on the high road

Interesting that she says she retired and mentions her health. Hope she is back on the road to recovery but maybe her health did have an impact on Chun’s decision. Could have been more mutual but regardless a touching letter from Coach Daugherty.

For Pullman being so tough to recruit to June brought in some very nice talent over the course of 11 years. Farewell June.

In hindsight, perhaps Chun could have let June make this announcement instead of a press release "she is not coming back". The kid is in the big leagues now. Time to learn some PR finesse?

Taking the high road leaving Pullman must mean June took Davis Way up the hill to catch WA 195.

People who are taking the low road leaving Pullman are leaving on Palouse Hwy (WA 27), South Grand to catch WA 195 (Dennis Erickson and his staff flying out of the Lewiston Airport), or heading east on WA 270 to Moscow or to the airport (Mike Price).

Or like Moos who left via the Hershey Highway when dumping on WSU.

Heh - replying to myself. :p

Always hate to refer to Brand X - but there is an article from March 30 about the Women's BB program and AD Chun. I'll risk one quote (below). This whole thing sounds very odd - he called a meeting with the team and told the coaches to leave the room? Then berated the team? Since when does an AD do that?

Not that you have to be a D-1 athlete to understand athletes, but I don't see where Chun ever played a sport. HS maybe. And he attacks the players' character? My opinion of him so far has gone from questionable to something less.........

McClure -- as well as others who asked to speak off the record -- characterized the team meeting with Chun last month as ranging from “unexpected” to “a left turn” and, ultimately, “harsh,” “attacking” and “unnecessary.”

“We had a conversation with the new AD and it didn’t go too well,” said McClure, a 6-3 forward from Tenino.

No AD who has been on the job for a month is going to impose his will or mistreat student-athletes. Nothing Chun has said publicly indicates he came in the door swinging his big d*ck like there's a new sheriff in town.

There's two sides to every story and most times the communicator is unfairly characterized by the communicatee.

As an aside, I coincidentally flew back on a puddle jumper with the women's team during the season. It was obvious there were chemistry issues. Lots of catty comments and eye rolling at least among the 3 or 4 players in my vicinity. Coaches weren't even on the flight.

Did you read the article? Chun was asked for his side and declined to comment. "Between him and the players". And about Chun's only public comment since his hire has been a warm affirmation of the great job Kent is doing.

And sorry to disagree. Calling a meeting and asking the coaches to leave is swinging his d***. His less than nice dismissal of June was similar.

I wonder what CML would do if Chun called a team meeting and then asked CML and the other coaches to leave. Then berated his players.

Finally, the other site welcomed Chun with open arms. I doubt that they would turn around and publish fake news about him. The quoted players are described as all high character - by sources within the Athletic Dept.

I reread the article and it leaves me somewhat confused. It's obviously from one point of view but it doesn't appear Chun said anything totally out of line. McClure expressed what Chun had to say but toward the end of the article McClure seems to acknowledge pretty much what she attributed to Chun.

The coaches and players came into this season making a lot of proclamations about winning the conference. I really didn't have that expectations but I did believe we had a team capable of getting to the Tournament. Finishing 3-14 in conference is a long way from making the Tournament.

I know Hristova struggled with injuries and literally played on 1 leg the last game. McClure has had ACL injuries to both knees and Lou Brown never looked quite right to me for most of the season. Something wasn't right from the start of the season though.

Maybe instead of just getting offended there should have been a few people taking a look in the mirror?

I agree, the team players openly admit that they did not play up to their potential. Yet, when confronted about a lack of leadership, they get upset because someone tells them the truth? The coaches seemingly lost control of the team and the lack of player leadership has to be in the mix. A change was warranted and if a few players leave then so be it.Lou Brown is a very good player but she basically let herself down. I hope these young women comes to grips with whatever bothers them and succeed with their new teams. It is time to move on as the program will be under new leadership.

Boy I just completely disagree with you guys. Yeah there are two sides to every story. But let's look at how these ladies (multiple sources) characterized Chun's beratement:
  • it was "their fault" the season didn't go well
  • "bullied"
  • took a "harsh turn"
  • "offended the entire team"
  • "character assassination"
  • felt "attacked"
And so far you all think Chun was right on and these young women are at fault and deserved to be be treated that way? And the ones that left are upperclasswomen. They don't have 3 or 4 years left to start over. That says something. Then the fact that Chun, after blaming the upperclasswomen for the poor season, fires their beloved coach two weeks later? And does it with NO sensitivity whatsoever? Well.....who's fault was the bad season? I thought it was the players. No I guess it was the coach.

And finally, Chun was on the job for all of what, a week or two(?) when he came down on these women. So he was intimately familiar with the season and the expectations and the root causes for the disappointment? Sure.

Hey I'm glad June is gone, should have happened a couple of years ago. Or more. And Chun may prove to be a great AD. But so far I am not impressed at all.

Well I didn't care at all for any of this, But the machine there tends to hide a lot of things and needs to become open and accountable. Not sure Chun got on my best side, but also not sure its very important that he does so. Who he hires will be telling.

I'm not saying I think Chun went about it the right way or that it isn't a concern. It's not a good deal no matter how you slice it.

Interesting comments. it may not have been the best way or his place to tell the players what everyone is thinking. However , we will see the what the final outcome will be. Have we seen a mass exodus of the other players?. One wonders what JD thinks of this? The next coach will have some work to do but he/she will not have to take the players to task for last year s season. I would guess that" the machine" was quite aware of player s attitudes and perhaps Chun thought that he was taking the lead in addressing problems amidst the team? To tell you the truth,I was not thrilled with his selection just i was not thrilled with the selection of the new president.

Me neither in both cases. And I won't dredge it up again (oops just did!), but I am really not thrilled with his 5 year, $650,000 contract. What if he turns out to be a train wreck? Although I guess that kind of term is sort of the standard these days for AD's, as it is for Head Coaches. All the more reason to be low on base salary and high on incentives......

None of us were at the meeting, there is no video that's been posted and we have no idea what was actually said. While I think kids today take a lot of unnecessary grief, I'm not going to get too worked up when a bunch of kids start crying, "he was mean to me!" when an actual adult comes into the room and lays out criticism. People of all ages take things personally when someone judges them.

If he went in there and told them that they were more talented than they played this year and that each one of them needs to take a look in the mirror and make sure that they were working hard to deserve the scholarship that they were receiving, it could easily elicit the responses above but he wouldn't be wrong.

Perhaps the players who remain will take up the slack and become leaders on next year s team. I really do not get worked up over the situation. What is done is done and it is time to move on. The players were not abused ,just called to task for their attitudes. What is the correct word to use, they need to "man up""woman up" to taking responsibility for their poor play and bad attitudes? Perhaps they should take it as a challenge rather than a putdown?I would like to know ,who the new coach will be.

Working with Men's basketball S&C coach Jason Dudley. Haven't thought about it but there are now a lot of seats to fill. Assuming Taryn Shelley (not pictured) comes back they have 6 spots open.
