Delightful. Mel Allen narrating as "swift Earnel Durden carries the ball for Oregon State College." :D

Oh, Alex Karras played in this game, as the anchor of Iowa's 6-2-2 defense against Oregon State's single wing. (That's how Allen narrated it, dunno how that 11th guy was meant to be lined up unless it was as a deep free safety)

This is genuinely fun. Everyone is small and seems a step slow because of the times and the footage and the playstyle, but the game isn't THAT different. The TV broadcast is using instant replay to fill in the time between plays even then, though Allen called the game solo. Kick coverage by both teams is lousy.

Thanks for that. Watched the first half. The Iowa QB looked good no matter what the time period. Wow, OSC had a 171 pound center!! I guess holding back then was a 20 yard penalty? The same is true now though that if you turn it over your first couple possessions to a good team you are in trouble. Whenever I hear Karras' name I can't help but think of Mongo from Blazing Saddles.

Whenever you see him make a tackle (you can tell because he's got like 75 pounds on everyone around him) I just think of the redneck sheriff in Porky's showing them Angel Beach boys what he thinks of 'em

TL;DR The penalty has been 10 yards for a long time, but it depends on where it occurred. So, while the penalty is only 10 yards, it may seem more because of where the penalty occurred.

For rule nerds:

Up until about 10 years ago (I'm guessing) holding was a spot foul in NCAA. It is still a spot foul in NFHS. And based on the all but on principle (or the NCAA calls it the Three-and-One, but it amounts to the same), all fouls are enforced from the basic spot, unless the spot of the foul is behind the basic spot. The basic spot on a running play is the end of the run (and on a passing play, it is the line of scrimmage). Now, I haven't watched the video, nor do I know where to look, but consider the following case.

The offense (A) has the ball 1st and 10 from their 40. There is a sweep to the right. A73 hold B90 at the 35. The running back rumbles forward to the A45. If the penalty is accepted, we have 1st and 25 from the A25. The foul is enforced 10 yards from the spot of the foul at the A35.

Another case. 1st and 10 from the A40. The quarterback drops back to pass. A73 hold B90 at the 35. The quarterback throws the ball and (a) completes the pass to the B45 and the receiver is tackled at the B40, (b) the pass falls incomplete. In (a) the basic spot is the B40 (all action up to is lumped into run by the receiver after the catch--this is a running play), and in (b) the basic spot is the A40. In both cases, if the penalty is accepted, it would be 1st and 25 from the A25.

The NCAA changed the rule that the basic spot is always the line of scrimmage, even for fouls that happen behind the line of scrimmage. I can't find when this changed, but it was in the last 10 to 15 years. From Rule 10, Article 2(b):

b. Fouls by the offensive team behind the neutral zone. For the following fouls committed by the offensive team behind the neutral zone, the penalty is enforced at the previous spot: illegal use of hands, holding, illegal block and personal fouls (Exception: If the foul occurs in Team A’s end zone the penalty is a safety.). However, see Rule 6-3-13 for offensive team fouls during scrimmage kick plays
