Keyshawn Smith commits

Interesting that many other P5 teams did not recruit him. He seems to have all the tools to be a very good WR.

He's in the Easop Winston mold of recruits lacking elite size/speed. Decent hands, speed and route running. If he hones his craft he'll be a really good one. Work ethic is going to determine how far he makes it as he doesn't have overwhelming physical talent.

They probably backed due to a perceived lack of speed. His 100 meter time last year was a rather pedestrian 10.75. However he looks quicker and faster on tape. However he had a good 22'3 BJ but no report on his JR ability. I think that he will surprise people with his route running and very good hands I like this recruit.

Kid is really fast. Watch the tape. Love how he wins 50/50 balls. Great pickup! Beat out Tennessee and Boise St and several other schools. His Sr film is very impressive.

Marcus Allen’s and Terrell Davis’s high school. Nice. Sure this kid isn't a running back?

Nice long stride. With some weight room and sprint work he'll be faster.

His film is weird. He looks massive but he's only 6'0 165. He looks Dez Patmon size compared to his competition.

Hes a long strider, looks like hes barely running, but hes flying. Good KR , has all kinds of moves.

Someone who meant to put 11.75:)

Looked up his time and they 11.75 number is accurate. He certainly didn't look like an elite burner on film. Gotta question the left of competition he's playing against as he looked like a man compared to his opponents, but when you look at his measurables they don't jump off the page.

I'm happy with this commit, though.

I only watched him once in person this year, and he was by far the best player on the field.
I watched Mater Dei and St John Bosco both play this year. Top two teams in America and proved so. Power 5 talent everywhere.

Kid looked like he belonged with those athletes. I'm not sure why this he is so under recruited. Actually happens to a lot of SD kids...

Which is funny, because 3 Heisman Winners come from that City

Keyshawn Smith’s recruitment turned upside down on Monday. “I wasn’t expecting it at all,” the San Diego, CA. native said. “I was shocked when he came in an offered me.” Tennessee receiver coach Tee Martin made the trip to the west coast on Monday with efforts of replenishing his position group that is set to take a major hit. Smith, a three-star, has been offered by 12 schools. Washington State made an in-home visit Tuesday night. “I’ve been texting him for a few days now. He called my coach and asked to speak to me. He said he’d be in town to see me and that he’d have some good news.” When Martin arrived and made the offer, it took Smith by surprise. “I can definitely play in the SEC, but I didn’t think I’d get any offers from there. I was surprised.
“Coach Martin said that I had good mobility and that I would be a good fit in their system. He said it would be good for him to coach me because he could make me better and that I would have a chance to come in and compete early on.” Smith plans to make the long trip east to Tennessee next weekend for a visit. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound athlete has never been to the state but isn’t worried about the distance from home. “I plan on leaving California and travelling, so that isn’t an issue for me. I’ve never been there, but I have been to Florida once when I was eight to play in the youth championships.”
“It doesn’t matter where it is – I just want a school that is going to look after me the right way and put my education first. That’s really it. As long as they look after me and make sure I graduate, I’ll be fine.” Smith visited Washington State and Nevada during the fall and said the two programs are on him constantly. “Teams like my concentration in catching the football and they love my speed. I train with a former Olympian and he clocked me on laser at 4.5 seconds in the 40 this past summer.” The Lincoln High School standout was also used as a return specialist this season where he registered a punt and two kick returns for a touchdown. Smith’s senior numbers finished at over 1,000 yards from scrimmage with around 800 yards receiving. The wideout totaled 14 scores. T said they
“U
’d like to use me in the return game, too. I’m comfortable with that.”

Laser timed 4.5 and the Vols see his as a kick returner, I don't think speed is an issue

Easily be true because not all football players are devoted track guys. SD kids being under recruited? Great opportunity for a young position coach to make more money landing the talent. What's stopping a young coach from watching all the film from the area?

Actually a 11.75 is pedestrian for a WR. I was typing with my crooked finger.Tthanks That is probably why he did not receive any other P5 offers.Compare his time to Fishers times . That is last year s time and perhaps his strength and speed have improved. Anyone who has run sprints will tell you that his time is certainly at the lower end of speed for a WR.

Getting out of the blocks correctly can easily shave .5 second from a 100 for some of these guys, and at 6' i would bet his start isnt great.

My point being, sometime numbers dont tell the whole story. Id be interested in his stride length and turn over rate. Whats his 200 and 400 times?

Tennessee is a P5

Jerry rice ran like a 4.6 forty. I never saw anyone catch him. Rarely saw anyone within 2 yards of him in man to man coverage.

track speed is impressive but it’s not everything.

Track speed means you can run. You still have to play football.

Agreed. somehow people saw" pedestrian" and missed out that i said that i really like this guy. I was curious about his track times so i goggled them His BJ is very good. As i stated he looks quicker and faster than his reported track times. He has great hands and excellent route running ability. If Tenn did offer him than they have a recruiter who can see football ability.
