Leach has promoted defensive line coach Joe to assistant head coac

THis surprised me a bit. For a large part of the season, I wasn't sure the DL was playing well enough to save Joe's job. They stepped it up later in the season and at least flashed some potential, but I remember watching them get blown off the ball by Nevada and thinking Joe would be job hunting in December.

Leach obviously wants to keep his man. It makes one wonder if leach is bringing in a Defensive coordinator who is another poly? This move will earn Joe a big raise and may assuage any hurt feelings in not being named D coordinator. I sure hope that Joe can help land T Settle the monstrous D tackle who has the cougs in his top four.

Two factors...1- Joe is reliant on a good DC with a clear plan and identity and 2- ...he's reliant on others who can recruit as almost as well as he can.

Joes strikes me as an excellent technical coach, great recruiter (namely pacific islanders) and a better mentor/father figure for these kids.

Being a DC is a large part watching tape, game planning, game managment and management of your staff.
