Lots of free BB

YES!! I was able to follow along online. Can you or Save Ferris provide a list game analysis?

This is the most fun I've had following basketball since 2010 Butler

Molina's best game as a Coug IMO. She was locked in on both ends. Ends up going 35 minutes, 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 TO, and (4-4, 2-2 from 3, 5-6 FT). Only 7 TOs as a team. We were the better team but grinded out that win.

Great teams win even when they can't get the engine running on all cylinders. This was one of those days.

Thank you for that.

Just as we drew it up😀

Molina is a big time player who is not afraid to make plays. Glad they spied on our convo on here lol

I still don't understand how we lose the best players we've ever had.... including my all time favorite player on any level Bobi Buckets and are better.

Well..I do know.

This is probably the best defensive team I've ever seen at any level in terms of every single possession

So happy for the girls that they pulled this out. Would have been crushing to lose another OT or final possession game. Also a good sign we were able to beat OSU again, as they are a quality team with a lot of talent and a great coach, and they still weren't able to figure us out. The problem with the slow starts and some issues with shot selection remain. We also continue to miss a lot of high percentage shots, but I think this is mainly because we are so undersized that our guards are compensating. Overall, just a really fun team to watch, and you still feel that there is so much upside potential.

It's definitely been the defense. Defense has kept us in games until the shooting wakes up. We still rely a lot on 2 players offensively but Bella and now Molina are becoming more consistent.

Good win against OSU. They got a 5-star that enrolled from Pasco playing in her first game. Would be nice if we could get some “locals” to take a look.

I hear rumor they have offered a freshmen from Liberty HS south of Spokane but not sure where you verify those things.

Recruiting locally will take time. A lot of it. Maybe a few tournament appearances will turn some heads but Wazzu has a coach from Australia with deep ties to that area so maybe at a school like Wazzu you gotta recruit international.

I had not heard that, but my memory is that Liberty was stacked last year; won the state 2B and had their top senior go to EWU. IIRC, they have two seniors this year. FWIW, that sounds a lot like Davenport the last couple of years that Jen Greeny was there. If they offered a Liberty kid, they should consider getting Jen to make a call. Sort of a Bi-County perspective on transitioning to major college level.

Yes Maisie Burnham

I would love for WSU to build a program around girls from Eastern Washington, but frankly that is delusional. No matter how "loaded" 2A Liberty High School is, they are not prepared to compete in the PAC12. In a 2A league, it just takes 2 quality player to take them to the State Finals. The reason we are suddenly competitive in the PAC12 is international players who have been playing on national development teams for years and are tough, gritty and crafty. Shir Levy was in the Israeli Army, and the Leger-Walkers are even tougher. Admittedly, every couple of years there is a legitimate D1 player from the region, but they seem very adverse to WSU. Maybe if we break through this year and get to the tournament we will get some looks, but what is working is international players and I don't see that changing soon.

Totally agree, CO. The issue is not that we can make a championship team from E WA or even the whole state of WA. It is more about getting the ones we want when they are available, and being their first choice. I suspect that another year or two at the current rate will go a long way toward making that a realistic thing. As for the international kids, we are an excellent place for an international kid to acclimate to the US, and we clearly know how to sell that.

Going with foreign players has been crucial for us. Nobody is going to confuse Pullman for Paris (or Rome) but foreign players aren't nearly as adverse to Pullman as a lot of "Seattle" kids (who are mostly from Kent or Auburn anyway but that's another conversation). It's literally the only way we can compete and I'm thankful we have carved out an international pipeline of players to Pullman. It just would be nice if there is a 5-star in Pasco that he or she gave us a look. You get that look by doing what OSU and Oregon have done over the years. The whole horse and cart thing.

I love the who and where of our roster.

You are right, there isn’t enough talent in EW to fill out a team but there is certainly talent, especially in the GSL. On the boys end there is typically 1, maybe 2 kids that go D1 with a 1 going to a Power 5 or Gonzaga once every 5-7 years but on the girls end, there are power 5 girls just about every year and multiple D1 players. Throw in CDA and Post Falls and it’s in the 8-10 per year range. As a matter of fact, there’s a Post Falls girl on the team this year.

Talent from places like Pasco, GSL, Eastern WA, WA in general, and bball talent from B8 football Highschools such as Will Derting went to are 2 different things on average.

Yes Will Derting was found at a B8 football HS. But thats not the norm. And its RISKY to go after, get a Will Derting.

1. There is a higher chance that they wont be a Will Derting, then they would be a Will Derting.

2. There is a risky chance they wont develop.

Why?

The reason why Bennets 3.5 star bball kid from Ephrata who scored 60 points in a game against Ephrata kids, didnt pan out.

Example:(This is not about me to toot my horn, but to make a point)

I didnt play highschool basketball thanks to coach that wouldnt let me try out for team.

I tried out and walked on and made the team as a 11th man bench player, 3 point specialist at Big Bend Community College, because Coach Poth, Jeff Palmer, Smith, and other players asked me. I was a bball gym rat at time that play pick up games with the players, coaches, and played rec, city ball, intramural ball, church ball, etc.

Then I played 4 on 4 full court games against some of the best college bball, highschool bball players in the BYU Provo Utah gym. I played with, against LDS missionaries, who were at the MTC(Missionary Training Center. Some of those Missionaries were great college bball, HS bball players.

I averaged 9 to 11 points and about 11 to 17 assist per game.

So why tell this?

If I had played Bball at a B8 football HS, I might probably would have DOMINATED.

Would that have meant that WSU then should then offer me, if that had happened?

No. It would have been a big mistake if WSU had offered me, if I had dominated, played at a B8 football HS.

And thats because I wouldnt have panned out, developed, because I wasnt, wouldnt have been a D1, P5, Pac 12 player, as I was a community college, JC player at extreme best.

But the reason I used myself as a example, is that I am, was probably the usual, normal, typical type of bball player that one would find at a B8 football HS, whether they dominate, get offered or not.

So because of that, its almost a waste of time, extremely risky offering a bball player at a B8 football HS, hoping that they will be the bball version of Will Derting.

Quite frankly, if I was a coach at WSU, I would not offer a Bball player at a B8 football HS. I would not offer a bball will derting type prospect.

They are scoring 25 to 50 points per game against kids that I would have probably dominated, had I played at that, those B8 schools, instead of 3A/4A Big 9 league, Moses Lake.

And because of that, when they play against Pac 12 players, they are usually going to get beat, smoked, even dominated.

Yeah once in a while one of them will end up being a Will Derting.

But its just not worth the risk, scholly.

Well I think the point there is that even if you are a D1 player in a 2A league, you are basically the only one. I think it is really impossible to judge a future D1 player who is playing against a league of girls who have zero notion of ever playing in college at any level. Obviously college coaches don't pay too much attention to high schools, and most of the recruiting goes on at the AAU/club level, but even on those teams the quality of opponent is incredibly mixed. I can tell you first hand that even at the big national recruiting tournaments, a top club is lucky to have more than one or two competitive games out of 4-6 games.

BTW- June Daugherty ran very nice camps that were well attended, and it didn't result in any meaningful Eastern Washington recruits that I can recall.

Lexi Peterson and Tia Presley were two that were meaningful recruits, although Presley was the only one who was good at WSU. Still, your point is still valid for as long as JD was there, one good player isn't much.

Honestly, the competition in the Northwest is just insane. OSU has been excellent for a long time, Washington getting to the final 4 with Kelsey Plum, Oregon was basically the uncrowned National Champion last year, plus Gonzaga has been going to the sweet 16 pretty much every year for a decade. I would be curious if anyone knows how the recruiting went down for the Hull sisters, and if there was anyone else on their list other than Stanford.

Can't completely write off eastern Washington girls, Tricia Lamb, the best player ever to suit up for the Cougs (1st team Pac-10 as a soph) played at St. John Endicott, but you can't build a program around them, as they are too few and far between, but Moos' daughter went to ASU, we need to stop that crap from happening in the future.

All of the Moos kids seemed to head south.

GSL, Big 9, Frontier League, Spokane, Cheney, Airway Heights, Spokane Valley, Millwood, Postfalls, Hayden, Courdalene, Prosser, Moses Lake, Pasco, Richland, Kennewick, Selah, Yakima, Pullman, Liberty Lake, Moscow, Clarkston, Lewiston, Wenatchee, Walla Walla, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, etc, eastern WA, WA bball girls, shouldnt be written off.

B8 football HS bball, 1A, soap lake, Ephrata, Warden, Ritzville, Reardan, Othello, Quincy, Sprague, Harrington, Creston, Wilbur, Deer Park, Chewelah, Cusick, Garfield, Palouse, Tekoa, Oaksdale, Rosalia, etc, might probably should probably be written off almost all the time, except for that once in 100 years that there is a Will Derting Type version of a Bball player that comes from those highschools, areas.

Cashmere girl, HVL didn’t even give us a sniff.
My daughter played against Hailey Van Lith in a championship game at Best of West Tourney in Yakima. She had Uconn looking at her and then stopped their recruitment. There were the Hull sisters in Spokane that chose Stanford. Spokane has a good AAU system.

There was a kid from Richland, another kid my daughter guarded at the best of the west and in a tournament in Edmonds. She is a senior this year and is an Oregon State recruit.

Jordan Jenkins from Kentridge went to USC (UW lost out as well), Daliah Daniels from Garfield went to Cal.

There are some kids on west side and east side, but I think our coach has the right approach to go to a place where they find good basketball players that want to come tp Pullman.

Plus the fact that the Cougs have a girl from Pasco or Yakama sitting on the bench isn't going to mean anything to another kid from Eastern Washington. Everybody they know is from Eastern Washington and they know plenty of kids already at WSU. If anything, having girls from New Zealand, Australia and everywhere else is probably a big draw for an Eastern Washington kid, although in reality none of that stuff matters much to a 16 year-old. If they were being recruited to a college in Romania or China and there was another kid from Eastern Washington, then maybe that would be a factor....
