There’s some suggestion that SMU should opt out of the ACC championship, because they don’t really gain anything by winning, but could fall out of the CFP entirely if they lose. If they opt out, then the committee has to judge them based on a 12-game schedule that they’ve already judged as worthy of a berth.

Doing that would give Clemson the ACC automatic berth and should bounce Alabama out entirely.

A understand the logic completely…but seriously, what the hell have we come to?

Why must the committee ignore the fact this little stunt makes a mockery of said committee?

Interesting, although if they opted out, which of course they won’t, that would just be a forfeit and they’d have two losses anyways.

Considering what’s bound to happen, think it’s time to get rid of human bias. Throw out the rankings and generate a formula everyone can be happy with then let the computers decide.

In the NFL, everyone doesn’t have the same schedule. But at the end of the year if there’s three 10-7 teams for one playoff spot there’s a formula for who gets the spot. Head to head, division record, conference record, common opponents, etc. Humans don’t get involved. This is how it should be.

I think they should do away with the conference championship games due to the new CFP format. Conference champions like SMU and Oregon have everything to lose and nothing to gain because they will have an extra game in comparison to other teams in the CFP which means less rest and more chance for injuries. Like a lot of the bowls, conference championship games are outmoded because how much the game had changed and puts teams who participate at a disadvantage.
