Well the suspense is killing this Coug. Figured we needed a hand-wringing thread.
Question - when is his birthday? Or in simpler terms, when does he turn 21? Every bar in Pullman wants to know. I've scoured the internet and can't find a birthdate. I see that SMU's backup and sometimes starter QB is entering the portal but will stay for the playoffs.

I wouldn’t say we are out of the woods but consider it very good news so far he hasn’t “entered” the portal yet. There’s no commitment once you do of course but sort of like a kid “reopening his recruitment” I’d say we went from 1% to 50% he’s staying which is outstanding.

I want to know when he turns 21! Can you imagine the NIL fundraisers we could have at establishments all over the state? "Have a beer with John Mateer" - proceeds go to his NIL fund!". And serve nothing except 'Ol Crimson beer. More money.

Edit - shit - Hutson just declared for the portal.

Hutson exiting doesn't necessarily mean anything related to Mateer, but it's not a great sign. You can read it as he knows JM is leaving and he wants to go somewhere with an established QB...or you can read it that his leaving means JM has fewer familiars to return to, now that his top 2 receivers and RB are gone. Or, maybe he just doesn't like that all the attention is on JM. Or about 1,000 other maybes that I don't have the energy to list.

Well, Oklahoma lost all of their WR's to the portal, so they probably overpaid for Hutson.

Top 2 receivers are gone? You mean for 2025 right?

He’s leaving. Watch Dickert post practice video. Dickert looks like a guy who had his life stolen. His eyes are blank. Dude is probably on the verge of a breakdown. Mateer is leaving.

I would suspect he is and that is my expectation, but what can be done....

WSU QB John Mateer to use weekend to mull transfer portal decision

PULLMAN – Washington State’s football program will change in a big way after this weekend.

Quarterback John Mateer will use the weekend to spend time with his family and decide whether to stay at WSU or enter the transfer portal, coach Jake Dickert said Friday, adding, “We’ll know very soon,” what Mateer decides.

It’s a monumental decision for WSU and Mateer, who has been taking part in the team’s practices for the Dec. 27 Holiday Bowl, Dickert said. Mateer finished the regular season leading the nation with 44 total touchdowns – 29 passing and 15 rushing. In his first season as starter, Mateer led the Cougars to an eight-win season, including victories over Texas Tech and Washington and a comeback road win over San Diego State.

The Cougars had a three-game losing streak to end the season – a skid that included setbacks to New Mexico, Oregon State and Wyoming – but Mateer mostly did his part all season. His completion percentage hovered around the 70% mark for the final five games.

Mateer would have plenty of suitors if he does enter the portal.

Last week, former WSU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle took the same job at Oklahoma, raising the possibility of Arbuckle recruiting Mateer to join him.

Former WSU running backs and associate head coach Mark Atuaia accepted the same role at Utah on Thursday, so perhaps the Utes would be interested in Mateer’s services, although they landed former New Mexico QB Devon Dampier out of the portal this week.

WSU has also reportedly lost QBs coach John Kuceyeski to Oklahoma, where he will work as senior offensive assistant/assistant QB coach. In the absence of Arbuckle, Dickert had tabbed Kuceyeski to call plays in the Holiday Bowl, noting his strong rapport with Mateer and the Cougars’ quarterbacks. Dickert will have to look elsewhere for that role.

Kuceyeski is the third Cougars coach to leave the program in the past two weeks.

He’s the fourth coach to exit since the end of the regular season, including former defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding, who was fired early last week. That means WSU will not have either of its coordinators for the Holiday Bowl.

“There’s no timeline to the right person,” said Dickert, who will call the WSU defense in the bowl game, referencing filling the vacant positions. “Obviously, I’ve been in a lot of conversations. My phone’s been blowing up from all the jobs that we have open and just the excitement for these positions.

“So we’ll take our time to find the right people and really sit down this weekend and continue that process.”

As of Friday evening, the Cougars have lost 18 players to the transfer portal, including seven starters: running back Wayshawn Parker; safeties Adrian Wilson and Jackson Lataimua; defensive tackle Ansel Din-Mbuh; punter Nick Haberer; and cornerback Ethan O’Connor, who teased an Oklahoma visit on his Instagram story Friday.

The Cougars are doing what they can to prevent Mateer from leaving.

WSU’s NIL team, the Cougar Collective, has prepared what Dickert called a “package” last week for Mateer in an effort to convince him to stay. Mateer reportedly has a $1 million offer from another school on the table, perhaps indicating his going rate.

“It’s been amazing to see what the Coug fans and Coug nation has done and the university through the collective,” Dickert said. “It’s been a really amazing kind of pitch.”

I read somewhere that Mateer is back East (not Texas) for a sister's (?) graduation. So back to Pullman tonight or tomorrow...?

Ok, so if I understand the Portal rules, schools (I foolishly assume this means the NIL people too?) can't "officially" contact a player until he is in the Portal?

So here is my prediction. Not that confident in this one, but hey WTF:
Mateer and Dickert/WSU announce that Mateer will enter the Portal but play in the Bowl. Reason? Not fair to Mateer to have to decide between a bird in the hand (WSU) or two in the bush (unofficial "offers"). Need it in writing. Then he can decide to stay or go after the bowl and with full knowledge.

Frankly, I don't want Mateer to play in the bowl game if he's leaving. I'd rather have our 2025 QB's getting reps and get to play in the game.

I don't see him staying.

Some Oklahoma new media ish guys reporting it’s done and will be announced soon. I bet he went on an unofficial visit but was “home”.

If Mateer stays, awesome. If he leaves, oh well, WSU is bringing in UCLA QB Transfer, 4 star, 5 star, 4.5 star Martin, that rated top 10 QB prospect, that will compete with Zevi Eckhaus for starting QB job. Martin is a Dual threat QB, that is fast, mobile, extremely athletic, shifty, like a combination of Mateer, Cam Ward, combined together, that has great vision, decisive, hits holes hard, passes on run semi accurately, passes accurately. At least that's the rumored projection, according to experts, pundits, etc.

Zevi if he wins starting QB1, would be 6th year senior QB, that finalist for Walter Payton Award in FCS.

If Zevi wins QB1, Martin expected to be QB1 starter after Zevi gone.

Assuming Martin will be ahead of Chubba, Potter, etc, at least 1 of the 2, Chubba, Potter, will probably portal out in 1,2 years.

So WSU will probably be perfectly fine at QB1.

Also Dickert will probably bring in 3 to 5 to 7 to 9 very good transfers, JC transfers, FCS transfers, G5 transfers, P4 transfer, via the Transfer Portal, JC ranks, to plug any holes.

I expect the team to be just fine next season, and to finish 11-1, 10-2 at best, 10-2, 9-3 at average, 9-3, 8-4 at worst assuming either Mateer stays, or assuming Martin, Zevi pan out, realize on paper potential, and assuming Dickert can bring some decent, ok transfers in, and assuming Dickert makes some decent, ok DC, OC hires.

I think that will, can semi probably happen, and think WSU will be ok, just fine, good next, this coming season.

Cupboard is definitely not bare, and Sky is definitely not falling.

Can’t blame Mateer. The rumored number is $2M. Happy for him and his family. With that said, I hope his locker is cleared out by Noon today.

Sounds like our collective offer including NQC was near what Cam Ward got from Miami which was 2.1 mil. It’s being made to sound like Oklahoma made it non competitive. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 3mil +

Rumors that he’s leaving.

Oklahoma dumping the truck for a quick fix. I love Mateer and want him to stay but Arbuckle in the SEC is going to be bad for his future. Hope for his sake I’m wrong.

Brand X is reporting Mateer is gone, won’t be playing in the holiday bowl and he is receiving 3 million from an SEC school.

gross.

That BX scooped it, the offer is $3MM, and that he's gone.

I really don't understand how this is supposed to work equitably for G5 schools. If they want it to be a farms system, fine just come out and say it because it is a defacto farm system. But everyone, including WSU admin are acting like it isn't and that WSU and other G5 schools will get an actual chance to compete. I mean, if Jeanty wasn't going to declare he'd 1000% be transferring to another school.

It sucks, it stinks, and above all its lousy being gaslighted (gaslit?) that what's happening isn't actually happening.

It’s not fair.

It’s not supposed to be fair. We were left at the alter then kicked out of the reception venue without a drink or a plate.

Everyone knows this and was my #1 reason for recommending WSU take the P-12 windfall, recognize reality and immediately downsize the budget to reflect this new reality.

We chose the Tidy-Bowl Man strategy instead. So, I (we) all play along.

How much more downsizing is there? CJD will be the last coach paid in that range, after that I expect WSU will have a $1MM budget for head coach and set themselves firmly in the mid to bottom of the G5 schools. Assistants are already getting squat, I expect they'll drop below 6 figures soon. They already have one of the lowest budgets of the BCS schools and middling among G5 schools, so what are you suggesting they reduce? Go FCS budget?

It's fair in that the oil billionaires will write a $3 Million check to a 20 something while the tech billionaires won't.

If all you can afford is FCS moving forward, then that’s the answer.

WSU may indeed end up there but not until we’ve waisted all the cash on salaries of staffers we won’t need moving forward.

I may be petty about this but I am wishing Mateer nothing but the worst at OU. We take time to develop a player and then some whore of a program like OU with deeper pockets comes around and makes him an offer he can’t refuse. College sports absolutely sucks and has been broken because of crap like this.

Microsoft, Google and Facebook, watch startups develop all the time then swoop in with money-bags to lure them away.

Damn. Wish I was surprised. You can't turn down $3M, if indeed that was/is the offer. Hope you got/get it in writing John. Going to a team 166 miles from your hometown for a huge wad of cash? Hate on him all you want, but every single person on this board would do exactly the same thing if in his cleats. So no hate from me.

Only question I have is whether it was Mateer's choice not to play in the bowl or if it was Dickert's. Probably Dickert's. Or Oklahoma's. As compared to ASU's coach who said Portal-bound players were welcome to stay for the playoff game(s).

I guess Eckhaus made the right move to come to WSU after all. We'll be OK.

This is the new reality, until rules are set on this crap it will be a free for all

I don't begrudge Mateer taking a bag of cash. That said, if WSU offered $2 million, which is a rumor I heard, it says that he's not a "Once a Coug, always a Coug" kind of guy and more of a "I have to look at my own interests first" kind of guy. Like any other player who leaves WSU for another school, he would no longer be worthy of my interest or support. I won't necessarily wish that he fails, but I may have chuckled when Miami choked their way out of a spot in the CFP.

Is that a thing any more? Will it ever be a thing again?

FWIW, the best thing Mateer had going for him was a Central Arkansas offer. You'd think a D1 opportunity would garner a little more loyalty, but those days are behind us it would appear.

At end of the year Mateer was worn. People caught him who didn't previously. Bronco dropped 8 and Mateer couldn't find the open receiver.

Mateer if it is OU will be expected to be 9-3 or 10-2. I am not seeing him run away from LSU, Georgia or Alabama linebackers and dlineman like he did against UW, Tech, or New Mexico.
