MBK Final: Colorado 92, Cougs 60 (Story + Highlight + Stats)

Offense looked worse than D. Poor ball movement, only 5 assists. Few good looks. We really are not a good 3 point shooting team without Franks, and when Skaggs isnt on fire. Not sure what is going on with Daniels. I know the concussion slowed him down, but he didnt look good even before that.

As Ernie pointed out after the game, this team needs to run the full court in order to succeed on offense. They are simply not a good half court team or built to be that kind of team. If you don't get stops at the defensive end or rebound very well, you aren't going to run the court. So while the offense was horrible last night, the defense is not helping.

By the way, how many more games will a player on the other team go off for a career high? There doesn't seem to be any ability for WSU to shut down a guy with a hot shooting hand. Hello, maybe make some in-game adjustments?

Glad Cougar

Cougs are in a pick your poison situation on D. Not a strong inside defensive presence. Aggresively defend the perimeter and guys blow by for layins. Sag to protect the paint and 3 point shooters pick us apart. Wade returning more to form will help a little. Franks length is needed.

Good assessment. However, if one player is red hot....like so many of them have been for the other team this year....I'd pick the other poison. At least try to make somebody else beat you. Does this staff ever make effective in-game adjustments? Or is it simply live and die by the 3-pointer with little attention to other aspects of the game?

This really sucks for Franks. The guy (apparently?) flirted with leaving last year, now he is hurt and thus can't show his talent to the scouts. Who already are probably not flocking to the Pac-12 games anyway. Watched the end of UCLA-Oregon last night. Man it was ugly.

Not to take the Cougs, or the Pac off the hook, but there is a lot of ugly basketball being played out there. All the college kids want to play pro style anymore . More and more teams living and dying by the 3. With Franks out and neither Skaggs or Daniels shooting it well we are not a good 3 point shooting team right now.

What's funny is that (from my limited purview of following Baynes around the league) it seems as if the pros are going the other direction - sharing the ball, playing defense, etc.

Very true, Ava. My interest in D-1 basketball is not as high as it was a decade ago. It goes beyond the downward trajectory of Cougar basketball, too. I just don't find the AAU-type style to be very appealing. Most of us who ever played the game were drilled into honing the fundamentals. Now, things like help defense, ball security, moving without the ball, etc...are afterthoughts. I kind of wish they would eliminate the 3-point line...but then, I'm a dinosaur in many ways. I watch more D-II basketball now than ever before and I actually enjoy it more than D-I. Of course, our local D-II university is a very solid program with excellent coaching that emphasizes execution of offense and defense, so that has a lot to do with it. Don't know what the answer is...but you are right, it goes beyond WSU and the Pac-12

NBA continues to evolve, and the college game follows. When defense becsme grab and shove the college game followed suit with a lot of 6-7, 250 lb post guys. Now we have evolved to the 3 point game with Golden State showing the way. It is this style of game that allows huge underdogs to occasionally grab the big upset ( see Virginia in the tourney, or MSU against the Cougs this year ). Yes the Cougs should have done a better job of picking up the hot hand, but I saw banked in 3s, nearly half court shots, and at least 1 with a hand in his face as the shot clock hit 1. That is the game today.

Imo it has been a mistake trying to make the college game mimic the the NBA. Most of the reasons were mentioned above by other posters. It used to be basketball fans could choose, fans of basketball usually tended to be fans of college basketball, while fans of the showmanship tended to lean toward the NBA. Personally I can appreciate both but prefer the college game because it is what I can relate to both as a coach and player. Like I said I can appreciate both but I really can’t relate to 6-9 guys who can drain threes and 6-0 guys throwing down 360 dunks
