MBK Final: Cougs 83, Utah Valley 76 (Story + Stats + Post Game + Highlights)

That was a good victory over a good team. EK got the attention of the players and they responded. The team needed a leader and Flynn responded.Ike is still Ike,and he had 5 TO s . He did not shoot and that is a good thing. If he concentrated on defense and played within the flow he can help rather than hurt this team. He is gifted athletically but really does not understand the game of basketball. The talent level is good but the players have to play together and play defense for this team to have a good season. Utah Valley had only lost to a special Gonzaga team. If the team can keep playing hard and together is another thing. The best thing that happened last night is that Flynn emerged as the leader. He may have worse night but if he plays within himself he will have a good season The players have accepted him as their leader and that is a good thing

Malachi Flynn scores 27 pts, fifth highest single game total by a Coug freshman.

Ernie Kent ranted a bit about the poor early season attendance during his post-game interview with Matt Chazanow.

Story (w/ Post-Game Interviews + Highlights): https://washingtonstate.rivals.com/...r-utah-valley-kent-disappointed-in-attendance

Stats: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=149321

Attendance began sliding during the Bone years, and going 1-17 only made it worse. Until WSU starts winning, students and alumni aren't going to care much. This win is a good one, but one isn't enough to excite students or pull adult Cougars away from Gonzaga basketball and back to Pullman.

I still have concerns about the program but that was a special effort by Flynn. I agree on Ike. 1-8 from the floor with all these tunovers. He could be a lock down defender but has no offensive game.

Also nobody mentioned it but Franks really looked good. He has a really nice stroke and is long enough and strong enough to play the 4.

Good game. First one of the year. I personally need to see a lot more to think much has changed. They played with much more urgency but I'm not sure what or how much to take away from the game. Are we the team that lost to SJS or the one that beat a decent Utah Valley State who simply struggled to hit their 3's until late? We were literally run out of the gym by a good Creigton, lost to a decent Loyola Chicago.

Flynn can play but I don't know whether we should expect outburst like last night every game and for us to compete that might be what it takes. Franks finally shot with confidence and the rim outs started to fall. Still amazes me Kent expects people to come out to watch his mess. Light a fire under them like last night and more will come but you just lost to SJS with a lackluster effort. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Go,Coug's

Cougs had good defensive effort in opener but not nuch since until last night. I give our defense some credit for UV poor shooting. Being open is not the same as being in rythym. Time will tell if they get that energy most nights. On offense we dont need Flynn scoring 27 to win. If you watched he was seeing the floor on every grive to the hoop
Next game you might see 12 points and 10 assists if the opportunity presents itself. Not sure about this team but Flynn is the real deal.

Ernie should know that if you put a good product on the court people will come. Coaches always seem to think that fans come before winning. Actually it's the other way around. No one is going to travel any distance to see a losing team, and many are not going to travel any distance.

That's if Franks, King, Callison, etc. continue to knock down shots. In the 2nd half I saw a lot more 1-on-1 and over dribbling and less flow in the offense. Defense was definitely more active although we loss an 18 point lead. Where has that effort been though? I don't know that Utah Valley would be any more than a bottom 3 team in the Pac 12 so it's hard for me to take away too much from the win. We have to get a lot better.

I'll be watching to see whether we get the same level of effort and execution against New Orleans, then Idaho and K-State. Win those 3 and Santa Clara and I'll start to buy in more. Until then I am highly skeptical we have the talent, offensive execution, or defense to compete.

I think there will definitely be more bad games. Thing that bothered me against SJS was lack if energy. Especially on the boards. Bad games with good effort dont bother me so much.

Agreed ,the cougs need consistent effort. There are enough good players who can pick up the slack if Flynn is not scoring 27 pts. If the team needs develops consistency and confidence. There is enough talent variable to be competitive this year

The roster and lack of recruiting noise bothers me. The Low class and all the need for them to develop gave me hope. When you following up what looks like a solid effort in Flynn, Acquaah, Pollard, etc. with 2 fall JCs and zero high school players it concerns me. I don't have a huge problem with the JCs because we currently have 1 senior in King and Franks/Daniels in the junior class. Hinson/Stewart have to be modern day version of Terrance Lewis/Ken Critton type talents though. If not they are a waste of time.

They have 2 more to give in the spring. Typically it's best to get high school talent in the fall when there is more supply. Would love to know if we are in on anyone of note. The only one I have heard is the Nevada transfer who is waiting for the spring.

We need at least one front court high school player at the talent level of a Flynn/Acquaah. That seems too much to ask for at this point.

Chidum has the look of a decent player who needs the red shirt he is getting. If he ultimately contributes along with Flynn Acquaah Franks Daniels and Pollard that is a good start. I would hope the last 2 rides go to high schoolers but the pickings are probably slim.

My main reason for being less pessimistic than a couple of days ago is the floor leadership I see quickly developing in Flynn. In hindsight the biggest reason for our terrible showing last season could have been the loss of the leadership from Lacy. I thought the talent last season was better than our record and the talent this year is better than our showing in at keast 3 of the first 6 games

The cougs are after Nolan Bertain , an Oregon HS recruit, whose tapes are impressive. He is an 6 4 guard who seems to be vastly under recruited. His tapes are impressive, as he has very good hops and is reputed to be a very good outside shooter. He reminds me of a past coug player who ended up transferring to Oklahoma where he did well ,His name escapes me at the moment. the cougs are also after a 6 11 HS player who is a late bloomer but has good talent and athleticism. He also has a coug offer, but i do not know his status. If the cougs land both i would be satisfied with the recruiting

Wonder how many actually heard the post-game interview?
He was "delicate" but wanted to make a point, no question.

I doubt he's expecting a sellout or anything but if there were 100 students, I'd be surprised. I was there.

I think that's the issue. He was calling out the students more than anyone else. He might have been "hedging" a bit towards the adult fans... But if you listen specifically, he mentions the "students" more than anyone else. Cripes they live a walk away. Why there aren't AT LEAST 100 students there, is beyond me. I don't expect Spokane or TC to show when there isn't a good product out there. But local, especially students? Come on...

Interesting...
Nate Erdman. He followed Sampson .
Was hoping Ergas turned into an Erdman but I would take 2 Erdman's (although he was more like 6'5"-ish).

Erdman is the player,i was thinking of. Thanks Good memory. The 6 11 player is Malik Ondigo. He has offers from TT,Tulane,WSU ,Colorado,Purdue, and Memphis. He averaged 24pts,13 rbs in HS but choose to go to a prep school. The offers have piled up after his summer showing. Also Kenneth Wooten is being pursued by several schools. So the competition is hot for their services. it would nice if EK can land one of the big men being pursued.

So I'm trying to understand Nolan Bertain. What's the deal with him? He seems to have good range on his shot, a little wild but can handle, and decent athletic ability. Is it grades? Is he really 6 feet tall? Some sketchiness in his background? He doesn't appear to have a D-1 offer.

He is 6'4 and 180 pounds . I do not know what the deal with him. He has said that he wants to prove recruiters wrong. I know that the cougs have been out to see him about two weeks ago. The recruiting analysis calls him an excellent long range shooter. Based on his tapes,he does seem to be vastly under recruited. The same thing happened with Flynn and he did not have many offers.Perhaps this is the case with Nolan?

I just rechecked his recruiting bio. The analysis calls him"an outstanding three point shooter". there is a tape when on an out of bounds play they thrown it above the rim he catches the ball and slams it home with both elbows above the rim The bio says he has interest from WSU,Idaho ,AF ,and Boise State.

'Prove recruiters wrong'. Wonder what he means? He's from Beaverton so not exactly out of the way.

I searched just for curiosity sake. .Nolan Bertain has switched schools for his senior year. He transferred from Beaverton HS to West Linn HS which is a 6A school ,which won a state championship last year. So,perhaps the lack of competition and playing in a lower classification hurt his recruitment? Sometime playing in lower classifications hurts one s chances of being recruited by the big schools. I do not know why i spend time searching for a player who will probably not come to WSU. I guess being a sports nut has something to do with it?

Doesn't appear he has a lot of quickness for his size and saw an article saying he doesn't do much defensively. Probably a BSU, Portland Pilot level recruit at best.

Perhaps that is the reason. However.he may have to play defense once he has transferred schools. His quickness seems to be Ok to me. I guess we will see if his recruitment picks up
