My next door neighbor was a patent & trademark attorney for his entire career. He commented once that anyone who has any sort of uniquely identifiable thing having to do with themselves should file to get control of it if they could foresee either themselves or others ever using it. Doesn't mean you would ever choose to try to license or use it...it might only be for self protection...but the closer you edge to being a celebrity (even an infamous celebrity), the more important it is to be able to control your brand. Certainly sports figures can qualify, but the same can be true for almost anyone who does something that stands out...landing a passenger plane in the Hudson river, as just one example.
