Minshew to the Eagles

Reunion w/ Dillard. I’ve always been an Eagles fan so glad to see this go down.

Glad to see Minshew escape that clown show. The Eagles just view him as third-string insurance for now--or, at least, that was their posture in trade negotiations--and he's not going to have a meaningful shot at playing time in the immediate term, but at least he has a chance to earn a backup role, and perhaps better. Crazy things can happen, too, especially with COVID-19. He will have to fight and battle to hang on, rightly or wrongly, like he always has had to.

For a conditional 6th rounder? I think JAX could have cold-called half the teams in the league and gotten more than that.

I'm torn on this. Glad he's out of Jacksonville, but I don't think there's much opportunity for him to see the field in Philly. And, they've got very little invested in him so there's little downside to keeping him well down the depth chart, or even releasing him.

On the plus side, I think the offensive style that Jalen Hurts plays is more consistent with Minshew than the style Lawrence plays...and Joe Flacco has the veteran experience that Jacksonville didn't, and he could be mentor to Hurts and Minshew.

Flacco becomes a cap casualty, perhaps?

Roster space casualty, maybe, but it looks like Flacco’s contract is fully guaranteed. I didn’t find trigger dates, but they might be on the hook to pay him anyway.

Glad to see GM get a new team, now maybe he won’t get injured due to seriously crappy O line,

Hurts' name is very apropos is my prediction, GM will get a chance is my prediction.

It seems to me that if he Eagles were happy with Hurts, this trade would not have been made. I think it is an indictment on Hurts. Flacco is overrated. But, he did have that one great playoff where he lead Baltimore to the Superbowl (although it was the defense that carried the team).

Honestly, I think Minshew is already a better QB than Flacco. But, Flacco knows the offense and Minshew doesn't. Flacco is also being paid a lot of money, and Minshew isn't.

This may be a trade that pays dividends next year.

No they couldn’t. They botched the situation miserably and that’s all they could get. Could have gotten a 2nd/3rd if they dealt him high knowing they were taking Lawrence. Good. Minshew is in a better situation and they blew it costing them draft capital.

They should have done it a month ago, or waited another month. Wait for a new starter to not pan out, or for one to be lost to injury...and be right there with a young and charismatic alternative with actual experience. I don't think they would have gotten a 2nd rounder, but a 3/4 should have been realistic. Dealing him now was just Meyer's way of avoiding a QB controversy in a month when Lawrence is 0-4.

I think Lawrence will be successful and I don’t think there was going to be a QB controversy after the preseason, but they sold as low as they possibly could have on Minshew. Absolutely stupid. In a multi-billion dollar business where it’s critical to maximize your resources with a salary cap, it’s amazing how bad some of these franchises are still managed.

I think some of you have romantic views of Minshew's perception around the league. My general read is he is viewed as a solid back-up spot starter type, that isn't garnering anything in the 1st 4 rounds of the draft, peak would have been 5th rounder most likley. Some of this is his limitations, some is he got started in a tough situation and now he has to overcome that. Either way he'll hang around for a nice 7-10 year career (if he wants) and hopefully he gets another chance at extended playing time.

Also, if you think JAX is a bad situation, well it got worse for him with a dumpster fire that is Philly right now. I'd take Jax upside in the next 2-3 years over the mess in Philly. That SB win for the Eagles is a distant memory at this point.

Minshew is the subject of typical NFL prejudice - everyone involved in talent evaluation is invested in making sure that their picks/ predictions are right, even down to proven losers like Blaine Gabbert getting his umpteenth chance (just the example that came to mind, but there are many Gabberts out there) while Minshew, who has SOLID numbers as a starter will continue to get kicked around because they didn't pick him to be successful. The ONLY way Minshew gets his shot now is if injury forces him into a starting role and he Nick Foles his way to a Superbowl, and we've even seen that scenario go sour for Foles (and Flacco). Outside of that, he'll be fighting to make a roster for the next few years and might not make a second contract.

I generally agree except I kinda see Minshew having no problem hanging around this league for - as mentioned above - 7- 10 years. He appears to be the epitome of the spot-starter/backup/fill-in. That's all I have to say about that.

Minshew=Fitzpatrick

If he is fortunate enough he will have a career like Ryan Fitzpatrick, solid backup that wins games he is supposed to, when the starter is hurt, does well and wins one he shouldn't, and for a few games creates excitement, then as he makes more money, gets traded somewhere else to be the back up. He could have a 10 year career doing that.
