Minshew

Until a couple days ago, I was thinking maybe Carolina. Now, he’s a winner in the Chicago trade because the odds of him going there seem a lot lower.
Miami is the hot rumor, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in New Orleans, Seattle, or back in Philly.
He’s not going to get a big contract. I don’t see this being a bidding war year, and I don’t think he’s the one they’d fight over. A backup deal probably puts him in the $2.5-3M range. If someone picks him up as a potential starter - and I think the odds of that are much lower this year than last - maybe closer to $4M.

New Oreans signed Derek Carr to a big contract last week. So, the Saints are out.

Missed that one.

Detroit is also possible, and a few others could open up depending on how things shake out with trades and free agency (Green Bay, for example). But the market is fairly saturated, and a lot of the teams with a need have an early pick.

Patrick Mahomes' longtime backup, Chad Henne, has retired. That can be a pretty important position in the event Mahomes gets hurt. Could be a nice way to get a Super Bowl ring for Gardner. Chiefs are likely to be contenders for a long time.

Good point, Glad, and it is hard for me to imagine Mahomes being injury-free from here on out. Part of why he is successful is his exposure to being hit. It is quite possible that his back up will get some "finishing the game" and probably also a start or 3 this season.

Gardner wants a shot at starting. How durable is Rodgers these days? Denver could be wildcard as well. Would they bench Russ in the midseason? Would Russ pull the injury card if he sees the writing on the wall?

Does he? He needed to be wooed by Leach lest he hang up his cleats to be a GA.

I'm not saying he's not at least as good as the bottom half of the league, but I sometimes wonder if he's one of those guys who is content with what he's given. You know, a 'count your blessings" type of guy.

Could be a good landing spot. KC has 2 other QBs on their roster, so it depends how comfortable they are with those. I can't imagine they would be...but then again, I wouldn't have been OK with Henne at #2.

Possible he decides he's done, but I'd be a little surprised. He can probably get a year or 2 at $2-3 million...why not take it?

Short of playing into a starting gig, this is probably his last NFL contract, and might not go more than 2 years. I don't know that I see him as the career backup QB, and after another 2-3 years I don't know that many teams are going to see him as anything but a low-cost, emergency backup

His dad was interviewed last season and said Gardner wants to start.

Not sure where he ends up, but speaking of Cougs and the Eagles, it looks like Dillard is on his way to the Titans.

Neither QB on the KC roster (after Mahomes) has taken a snap in the NFL. Risky business to have the backup to the NFL's MVP with no game experience. They are definitely looking for a veteran backup.

The Rams, Vikings, Browns, and maybe the Bengals also seem like possibilities. All of those put also put him behind an entrenched starter, so it’s hard to say that they’d be better than staying in Philly.

Although….I don’t think his playing style works that well in Philly. Him and Hurts are not the same kind of QB, and the offense wasn’t the same with him in relief duty. Not sure KC would be much better. Really, I think he’d fit pretty well in Seattle, and he’d be a good economy backup to Smith. Drew Lock is a free agent, in much the same situation as Minshew (but a full year removed from his last live snap). IMO, Minshew has a better presence and is a better fit than Lock. Either way, it puts the Seahawks in a position to use their raft of picks on other things.

Every QB wants to start, and its career suicide to publicly state otherwise, but GM is not a starting NFL QB.
I just looked at a ranking of the 32 primary starters in 2022, and I'd say that GM could match performances with the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the 2022 starters. I don't think he's going to be a pro bowler, but I don't think it's fair to say he's not a starter. Evidence of that is in the numbers he put up in Jacksonville, event with very little talent around him.

I disagree, but I hope it happens for him. Teams in the bottom 1/4 of the league aren’t going to pay any more for a starter than a backup. For example, if the Raiders had gone out and signed GM over Garappolo, for one, their fan base would have gone ballistic, and secondly, his contract would have been peanuts. He’d be signed at backup money, not starter cash.

Everyone’s seen his tape and nobody’s buying.

Geno Smith didn't set the world on fire prior to last year. Gardner might not be a future HOF QB, but he's not going to embarrass himself out there either. Plus, if he wins a few games he's gonna sell a lot of merch.

They’d be wise to pick up Gardner and draft a future qb. Let him watch Gardner play and breakdown film. Gardner doesn’t have overly pro arm or speed, but is very smart and can teach a more talented guy to be special in the ways that athletic heavy QBs are not.
