Name the TWO best NCAA players you witnessed during your at your time at WSU

Bill Walton and ????

Sidney Wicks? Lonnie Shelton? Steve Puidokas? Probably a few others to throw in there, but I just don't remember who was on all those PAC 8 teams that rolled throw Pullman back then. (1970-1975)

Ron Lee put on some shooting performances. Gus Williams for SC.

Gus and Guy played together for 1 year in 84-85.

Don Collins when he was on. Year before I got to Pullman but went down for games.

Lots of others- Byron Scott, Reggie Miller, Detlef, etc. Patrick Ewing and Georgetown at the NCAAs in Pullman

Saw the US All Star Team play Russia at Expo 74 -was only about 11 years old - but David Thompson was legit legendary.

I would've added Magic Johnson to my choice of Bill Walton, but I had graduated the year before the Cougs played Michigan State at the Far West Classic in Portland.

Yes, I think 7I Coug wins with Walton and Alcindor.

Glad Cougar

Shareef abdur Rahim
Damon Stoudamire
but Isaac and Hendrickson were my favorite cougars...
First time I saw Hendrickson was when he was a soph. at MV vs. BE. I had gone the game to watch their hot shot guard (Caviezel), who was going to the UW. I came away saying that tall soph. is going to be a better player. He was.

I watched taht Far West Classic in Portland live! Old memories.

The best performance from a player I ever witnessed in Beasley was Damon Stoudamire during the Eastman era. Cougs had the game won and Stoudamire went off and eventually beat the Cougs in OT.
Ah yes, the snapple bottle game.

Win or lose, we sure throw more shit from the stands...

Fwiw, there were some garbage calls near the end of that game, but it seems like that's always the story with WSU basketball when they're close to knocking off a giant.

you were right. caviezel couldn't hit his shots at the next level

You'd think having Jesus as his brother Caviezel would have a little help getting buckets.

I can't remember how many there were, but I met a younger Caviezel brother working a Cage Camp in the 90s. He was funny and a bit of a cutup. He was also obsessed with Top Gun/Maverick and was always reciting lines from the movie. I think he said he wanted to go into acting, but guess having Jesus as his brother didn't help him either.

Bill Walton and Louis Dunbar (Houston Cougars). Dunbar became star with Harlem Globetrotters. When Houston played at Bohler (in ‘72), they sometimes played 5 players, shortest being 6’8”.

Oh Caviezel hit his shots, but he was a “hot dog”. Mark was just so smooth and efficient.

Yeah, it wasn’t close. 2 years later the Times said MV should stop by the coliseum and pick up the 4A trophy on their way home from romping through their class.

My kids are Valley kids. I grew up in Iowa in an area similar to Lynden. Played against Vern Den Herder and with his cousins. He was a better basketball player in high school. Led his team to a state championship.

Vern Den Herder, wow haven’t heard that name in awhile! GO DOLPHINS!!

Where in Iowa?
Rock Rapids (Central Lyon - 2022 State 2A Champs in football, and runners up in basketball) It was a conference similar to NWL. It’s made up of 3 classes, and will quite often have 2 or 3 teams in the state finals for football. Their games are even streamed on YouTube.

Vern played at Sioux Center.

A ways to the south and east. “Rocky” is in the very NW corner.

I just checked the men’s team is the #1 seed in their tournament and the women’s team is undefeated and #2 seed.

A lot like Lynden.

Stoudamire was hitting from like 35 feet in the 2nd half that game. Everything he threw up hit net. Hard to beat that.
Even worse when the refs are called blocking fouls when our guys set screens, and then look away when UA levels a defender with open-field blocks. I was pretty pissed when the student section started tossing stuff on the floor, but understood completely why they were upset. And really, the refs were clearly going to make sure UA won…the students just made it easy for them.
Same year, our guys had UCLA on the ropes and the zebras stepped in to prevent that too. It wasn’t as egregious as the UA game, but I think I remember them calling a Coug player OB when driving the baseline…even though he wasn’t.
