New baseball coach

Quick turnaround.

Maybe Schulz and Chun had their eyes on Choate during the season — in case they decided to pack Green's bags for him.

Loyola (CA) went 29-24 and won the WCAC this year (7 games ahead of the Zags). Good accomplishments in a good conference.

Sounds like Valentine is staying and has a connection to Choate.
Interestingly enough, Choate took over for Jason Gill at LMU who was hired to coach the Trojans. Gill lasted four years at USC before he was fired earlier this month. I think Chun has generally done well with his hires. I don't know enough to know one way or another if this is a good hire. I will just have to trust Chun.

I don't know. Choate had losing seasons in 2021 and 2020. Like 1990 said, we'll have to trust Chun on this one.

Not too sure about this hire I think we could have done better
I dunno. As an old baseball player and pitcher, I don't think a head coach does shit. Baseball is about talent and ability, neither of which can be coached up. The one coach I wished I'd had was a pitching coach. He might have been able to get a few more miles per hour out of my fastball, or helped me perfect my knuckleball. Or teach me to throw a slider. Clearly that's what the Cougs need. A good pitching coach.

Edit: According to Brand Y, Choate was a pitcher then a pitching coach. So I endorse this hire 100%

I think a head coach can always make a difference, especially getting talented players to play up to their potential. Bobo was the coach when I was at WSU and his teams had talent & ability, but no more than what Jack Riley had at OSU or even some of the teams I saw from UO (before they axed their program only to resurrect it years later). The difference, IMO, was Bobo's ability to motivate & get the most of what he had. As a result, Brayton-coached teams routinely won the Northern Division over those other teams. I don't know if Choate will be the answer, but I hope for the best.

Glad Cougar

Yeah a lot of baseball is between the ears. Talent is important but that doesn’t explain why the guy who goes on a 15 game hitting tear then goes 1 for 25. I think it’s as critical for a baseball coach/manager to do everything possible to make sure his guys heads are right, as much or more so than any other sport. That said, some guys have a lot better emotional IQ and read on their players than others.
