Jamir and his Massillon teammates play in the state title game this weekend, so the timing of this commitment caught me and everyone else off guard. Massillon players, almost to a man, refuse to discuss recruiting during the season, so the last time I spoke with Jamir was in the summer and Washington State was not on the radar for him then. I've reached out to Jamir - with my primary question being what position the Cougars plan to bring him in for - but have not heard back yet. I did speak with his head coach, Nate Moore, about mid-season and that was right after Jamir had set the career rushing yard record at Massillon. For those unaware, Massillon is one of the most historic football programs in the country - their annual rivalry game against Canton McKinley was the only one to have a betting line in Vegas for many years - so setting career records there is impressive. However, most college programs saw Thomas' highest upside at LB in college.
Jamir had popped several big offers early in his recruitment, but when I spoke with him in July only a few of those teams were still recruiting him. As I said, Washington State was not mentioned at the time. The Cougars only offered him a month ago, but seemed to pursue him pretty heavily since. Linebacker is probably the position Jamir has the highest upside at in college, but he may be more of a sure thing as a running back. That versatility certainly adds value, because you can plug and play where you need help, or if he doesn't work out at one position you can roll him out at the other.
